Does anyone have any experience with taking Amitriptyline tablets?

The consultant/Doctor at the hospital has prescribed them 10mg, one a night for 2 weeks and then 2 a night until I next see him. He explained they were an anti depressant but they were being used as pain relief. It says nothing about pain relief in the leaflet and tbh some of the side effects are very scary with my history. Dh is researching the tablet today but surely it is okay for me to take them if the doctor has prescribed them? He knows I am on AD's already and that I have asthma.

My DH has taken them (not sure if he does at the moment) for migraines, not as an AD. They are definitely a pain relief for him. I'm not sure what side effects he had - he has tried many different medications for his migraines and has had various side effects.

purplepeony · 06/05/2010 08:58

Not taken them but know plenty who have.
You should ask your dr or pharmacist more questions- they are there to help.

The AD effect kicks in at 75 mgs and above- so 10mgs is jus t pain killing effects.

side effects can be dry mouth and sleepiness during the day and you might need to take longer to get used to the 2x a day higher dose.

marriednotdead · 06/05/2010 09:09

Both DH and I were prescribed them for pain relief some years ago. Both found them more like a sedative so only used them once. Couldn't function normally until well into the next day, felt very fuzzy headed. Maybe needed a lower dose but would be scared to use them if dc was young enough to be waking at night- not sure I'd hear them. Everyone's experience is different. Try them but perhaps on a night when someone is around to tend to little ones.

I take them for pain relief for my Fibromyalgia in the dose you have been given. I would say to take them in the early evening, someone suggested that to me once, so I have a reminder on my phone and take them about 8.00/8.30/9.00pm. That way the sleepiness which can occur kicks in ealier and has worn off a bit by the monring, although TBH I don't really get affected in that way by them

Jux · 06/05/2010 09:27

I used to take them for pain relief. AD's do have this wonderful quality in low doses - they act on nerve pain. I took them for a few years, but eventually I was on the 'top' dose (before they start acting as ADs) so they put me on something else. I'm taking dosulepin now, which is the same sort of thing, an AD in low dose.

I took them immediately after supper, that way I'm sleepy by 9ish. I got dry mouth, but that was the worst side effect.

Floopy21 · 06/05/2010 10:16

I've taken them for sleeping problems. Same as others, fuzzy & heavy the next day but apart from that, not any other side effects. If you read the list of side effects for any drug, they sound scary, the list is such so the drug company covers all bases. Maybe give them a whirl & see how you go? You can always stop taking them.

Thank you everyone.

I had to take the kids to school and then to my therapy session.

I really appreciate all your posts, advice and experiences.

DH is here every night so he can get up with the children should they need him and tbh he hears better than me mostly anyway.

I am on 150mg of amytrip, plus citalopram and ramipril

I do find that it makes me muzzy and groggy, and mornings are hell

but it controls my anxiety, which means I can have a life

swings and roundabouts really

Is it just the first morning after you feel rubbish or every day?

I am on an even keel with my AD's at the minute and really can't cope with going down hill again.

I took them for referred nerve pain caused by a herniated disc in my back. It stopped the referred pain down my leg and eased my back pain. I can't recall the dose I was on but I didn't have any side effects.

DumpyOldWoman · 06/05/2010 10:57

It is used in low doses to modify your perception of pain. Also effective in some children to prevent bed-wetting. If you are concerned about contraindications with regard to your own history and health, then do ask both your GP and the pharmacist.
I hope you get some relief though.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 06/05/2010 11:37

I do too.

I took 2 paracetamol this morning as I was in so much pain. How long do they normally take to kick in? The paracetamol I mean.

I was prescribed 10mg for migraines but couldn't take them as they gave the most horrendous restless legs all night.

The only times I took them, I was up all night.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 06/05/2010 11:46

Oh dear. I hope that doesn't happen to me, I am always so tired even when I do get some sleep.

Funnily enough it has just been mentioned on This Morning and the Doctor said it is used for migraines, etc so I will take my first one tonight.

I had them after having viral menigitis and a cocked up lumbar puncture which left me with back pain.

Had to take before bed as i was useless once i had taken one. Again, i had no idea they were AD's til i got the pills and read the leaflet.

Saltire · 06/05/2010 12:06

Fab - tyr taking it earlier in the evening and see if that helps.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/05/2010 12:13

have had them for ibs . made me very very dopey to start with but they were jolly effective.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 06/05/2010 12:13

Saltire, what time would you recommend or is it more a case of so many hours before you want to be asleep? DH and I were planning on staying up tonight to watch the election coverage but I expect we won't last long.

OYBBK - the lady on This Morning rang in about IBS and was advised to take them.

JackBauerIsZonerrific · 06/05/2010 12:53

I used ot take them for my insomnia, did feel fuzzy headed the next morning but better than not sleeping, I was only supposed to tkae them twice a week max though for that.

Saltire · 06/05/2010 14:43

I take them between 8pm and 9pm, and usually got to bed between 10.30a nd 11. I also have asthma and have never had any problems with it and the Amy tabs.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 06/05/2010 14:52

Thanks Saltire.
