normally very healthy..then developed a weird cough 24 hours after a game of badminton. Have had a tight chestand a bit wheezy ever since and cough when i lie down.
Had 2 blood tests for something else at xmas and they both came back with raised eosinophils. Feel slightly under the weather which is not me. Anyone any clues

It sounds like an allergic asthmatic reaction.... I have it myself occasionally. When the bronchial tubes are inflamed (happens sometimes in dusty environments, hay fever season etc.) then the shortness of breath created results in coughing - like you're trying to clear your throat all the time. And if you're perpetually a little short of breath, not getting enough oxygen, you can start to feel under the weather.

I'd suggest seeing your doctor. If it is a type asthma then it's easily treated.

alypaly · 31/03/2010 13:24

did you have a blood test to confirm

i sometimes get it when i go on holiday and sleep in a different bed without dust covers on...im wondering if its dust mites...as DS2 is allergic to dustmites. I have rhinitis and post nasal drip constantly.

doc has booked me some spirometry tests and has put me on beclomethasone and salbutamol inhalers til i see the nurse, which is another 5 weeks.

alypaly ..have you ever tried cutting out dairy? 'cos yr symptoms sound just like mine when I occasionally have some cream or cheese.

alypaly · 02/04/2010 14:37

ppeat........i have several other symptoms which is leading me to think i may be starting with rheumatoid arthritis. My hands and feet are really hot all night and are so stiff when i get up.I feel really lethargic which is sooooooo unlike me. Loosing weight too. My eyes are dry and i have a positive eosinophil test that is way above normal. I was goggling and found that i have the symptoms of CEP (chronic eosinophilic pnemonia) so if doc keeps treating me as an asthmatic i may have a word. I have been on the beclomethasone inhaler since tuesday and it doesnt seem to be making any difference. I was a bit concerned when she concluded that it was very rare to start with asthma in your 50's

My Dh's late onset asthma is deffo worsened by dairy: it's worth a try and can't hurt you.

I don't have any aches and pains and i'm in my 50's too.

I do find googling symptoms can be very anxiety making!

alypaly · 02/04/2010 22:29

how long did it take for steroid inhaler to start working initially as i am feeling really anxious tonight...as i cant stop this stupid tickly, dry, cough. I feel as if i am breathing through a bag of cotton wool.

hi pixie..........just a bit worried about the dosage you recommended. You can only take 8 doses in a 24 hour period. If you take 10 in one go you will cause the heart to beat irregularly.

hi pixie (feeling really crap today but thanks for the well wishes
...slightly concerned as i have worked in a pharmacy for 30 years and the maximum dose for ventolin is 8 puffs over 24 hours.....this is the data sheet for the productwww.medicines.org.uk/emc/medicine/3860/PIL/Ventolin+Evohaler

if a patient is taking more than 8 puffs then their medication should be reviewed and a steroid inhaler added in. then the next stage is the longer acting beta2 agonists. Side effects from over use of ventolin are what i am suffering really badly from today which is very high blood pressure, ringing in my ears, shakes and a sore chest.i have never had to take medication like this before and it has really frightened me as i normally have really good bllod pressure and a slow heart rate of 45. my pulse has been racing with 8 puffs of ventolin....really scary today.

cant see anything on your page pixie...it showing nothing If you speak to the astma nurse at your surgery or hospital i am sure they wont say use 10 puffs at the same time....it can cause fibrillation and arythmyias. I know of people who have used up to 10 puffs a day and then the nurse had added the steroid inhaler in to get better control. If she is having to take that much ,it is not being controlled in the correct mannner according to the guidelines. The manufacturers would be mortified at 10 puffs for one dose. It can push blood pressure up too.If i saw a prescription for that dosage, when despensing, i would have very quickly questioned the GP

you can use that much ventolin, we also have had to do that every now and then. It's not to be done permanently but is better than getting an attack and it's recommended treatment by the NHS. If 10 puffs don't work, then you have to go in to get the neb.

here's the clinical knowledge website for asthma medication with the 10 puffs recommended

foxinsocks · 06/04/2010 12:46

ps sorry to hear about the pericarditis. Sounds painful!

foxinsocks · 06/04/2010 12:48

not sure the links are working but it's definitely recommended

if you are having to take 10 puffs regularly, then I'm sure the docs would think it was cause for concern

foxinsocks · 06/04/2010 12:50

let me know what happens with all your tests if you don't mind

you know I am still getting that sore joints thing

alypaly · 06/04/2010 12:51

that sounds more like it fox but it stil sounds an awful lot and not something i have honestly ever come across in pharmacy in 38 years. It must be something they tell you as an individual as i have never seen it on a prescription.

OMG if you took 10 puffs four times a day you would be horizontal, for good.

OP posts:
alypaly · 06/04/2010 12:52

none of the links are working

OP posts:
alypaly · 06/04/2010 12:55

jog my memory fox....what other symptoms did you have. The consultant reckons this attack of pericarditis is possibley due to the parvo virus again........i hope its not coming back, but unfortunately alot of the symptoms are rearing their ugly heads. Sore eyes, hot hands and feet with stiffness in joints in the morning

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 06/04/2010 13:02

how bizarre aly

I didn't realise it could keep coming back like that. What a horrid virus.

I get sore joints (normally fingers, toes, elbows, hips though used to be knees, it moves around) and the next day a rash on the joint.

I got allergy tested as have had rhinitis too and a cough (caused by reflux which has worsened).

I am still convinced it is all the same thing but at the moment, all the separate issues are being treated separately. Sore joints not being treated as it's a pain but not limiting what I'm doing (other than exercising so I'm putting on weight which is a pita!).

Saw an allergy bod who found out I have a v severe allergy to grass pollen (which I knew) but also to mould (the stuff in houses, that black mould).

He thinks it is psoriatic arthritis but I am not convinced. I am thinking of going to see a rheumatologist and getting it sorted once and for all.

What do your raised eosinophils mean?

alypaly · 06/04/2010 14:12

they are raised if you have asthma as they are a measure of your immune system. But also they go up if you have an auto immune disease(ie psoriatic arthritis, lupus, crohns etc)and the blasted parvo virus.

Fox did you ever get tested for parvo?

They told me in 2003 that it was likely to come back and slowly all the same/similar symptoms are returning. The doc today said he would like my rheumatologist to redo all the blood tests as immune disorders often take years to develop and he thinks further tests pointing towards Rheumatoid arthritis are required.apparently ths inflammed heart lining is part of he bigger picture.
