fox - what a prat of a GP.
Tilly - I had a malignant melanoma 18 months ago. To be honest even though it was a shock at the time I was perfectly fine and was treated very quickly.
I had a mole on the side of my face which had a sort of red ring round it, and had darkened and felt 'hard'. I spent a lot of time in the tropics as a kid and fried, I am also very pale so I do keep a look out for any changes with freckles etc. I went to GP who said it may be something which needed looking at and referred me to a dermatologist for an urgent referral.
I was seen within 5 days. Straight in to specialist, they looked at the mole under some sort of microscope thingie (note technical terms ), they said that it looked very 'active' and needed removal. They did it there and then - cut the mole out with a scalpel, took like a oval shape of skin and stitched it up.
The mole was then analysed, found to be malignant so they called me back to make sure that they had removed the lot, so had to open up stitched and have another excision.
After that all was well. The scar did take a long time to heal, and being on my face felt quite self conscious. However with bio oil it is not very noticeable any more.
I have to go to dermatologist yearly for check on other moles, it is quite likely that I will have another mole which 'turns' due to my history of being badly burnt as a child. However now I have gone through the process I am not scared, but just incredibly vigilant.
One thing which has come out of it - I religiously slather high SPF everywhere now.
So - please don't be scared. If the news does turn out to be bad, it is not necessarily a terrible thing and the treatment is (in my experience) very good and quick.
Hopefully it will be nothing, but if it isn't, don't be too worried.
Best of luck.
