Dodgy mole - any experiences ?

Tillyscoutsmum · 15/03/2010 13:47

I've always had lots of moles but now have one which looks and feels a bit dodgy. It is crusty (nice eh ?), has got bigger and itches.

I've made an appointment to see the GP on Friday but just wondered what to expect really ? Will they know immediately if its anything to worry about or will it have to be removed and biopsied (sp ?)

Any experiences and general hand holding gratefully received

Tilly , how you doing ?

good your doc referred you , you should get appt through quickly . did your doc tell you anything els ? what did he think ?

i went to see my dermatologist all was ok ...

i went last end oct for full body scanning and saw him then , said no need to return for a year unless i felt any change or was worried about one ...
ill keep slapping on factor 50 and out of the sun for me i think ...

keep us posted on how your doing xx

palacemonkey · 19/03/2010 19:24

thank you - DS and I are OK - but seriously, it makes me so glad to hear about all of you who are so sun-aware.

Fliight · 10/04/2010 20:14

Palacemonkey, I am really sorry to hear this.
I lost my closest friend to MM a couple of weeks ago, 9 months out from diagnosis.

It's vicious isn't it

Tilly - how did you get on? Hope things are all Ok xx

gorionine · 10/04/2010 20:25

Back home I went to see a dermatologist because I actually "beheaded" a mole while tightening the belt of my trouser.

Dermatologist could have just looked at the "problem one", instead he had a look at every single little spec on my skin and decided to remove 3 of them. They were not very big but because I had told him I thought at least one of them had slightly changed colour he said it was better to remove.

Turned out they were not malingnant but I am stil glad it was done.

Fox, I am so that nowadays a GP would not take that issue seriously!

Tillyscoutsmum · 10/04/2010 21:27

Just updating (thanks for thinking of me )

Referral came through pretty quickly (it was on 30th March). Derm was sure it was nothing but took it off, just in case and biopsy came back clear .

I've got hundreds of moles so I'm just waiting for an appointment to come through for someone to have a good look all over just to make sure all the others look ok as well. My mole M.O.T, if you will

Fliight - I'm so sorry about your friend. I did see the thread but had no idea it was a MM. Such a fucking awful, hideous disease

Fliight · 11/04/2010 08:49

Thanks Tilly, and thanks for updating - I'm so, SO pleased!!! When you didn't post for a while I got a bit worried! Not that it's any of my business tho

But HOORAY and well done for getting it taken off. That's one thing you can relax about!

Tillyscoutsmum · 11/04/2010 15:17

Thank you

i have appt in 2 weeks for mole check , worried still over my moles ..

glad all went well with you tilly .

Dogandbone · 13/04/2010 12:06

Thank you to whoever mentioned the mole clinic. Dp has one that is bothering him. And thanks to op.

hogshead · 13/04/2010 12:12

only just found this thread but i too had dodgy mole in a rather unusual place!

Anyway I showed it to my dermatologist (who i am under anyway) who took one look at it and whipped it out. In my heart of hearts i knew there was something not quite right about it - it was a star shape and was a strange colour (reddy black) but becuase of where it was i couldnt easily get a good look at it. Turned out it wasnt quite malignant but was `on the turn' so had the area re-excised just to be sure.

My advice is to always follow your instinct and get them checked out. I now never use anything less than SF 50!

choclab · 13/04/2010 12:26

god im shaking now ... where was yours ?
just found one on right under bottom [blush ] place doesnt get seen much , had it years , its quite big kind of and pale brown in colour kind if like a tagy type one and got big long hair growing from it ... not itch , sore at all , now worried ...

never had it checked before .... due to go to mole clinic in 2 weeks for normal check as i am a mole worryier ....

help im now terrified ...

choclab · 13/04/2010 12:42

anyone calm me down ..please ...

DorotheaPlenticlew · 13/04/2010 12:50

hey now choclab. Why are you worried about that one in particular, if it has been there for years? Is there any reason beyond just the general horridness of fearing the worst? Try not to assume the worst without cause, you'll just upset yourself to no purpose.

The check you are getting at the clinic is the best way to find out, and you have already organised that, so ... breathe and remind yourself that the mole will be seen soon by someone who knows.

winnybella · 13/04/2010 12:52

Choclab why are you worrying? Has it changed over time? Sounds like a totally normal mole. I have tons like that.

Anyway, you've got an appointment in two weeks, try not to worry before.

I think I'll stop replying to your posts as I have only one thing to say and it's ' will you please get yourself to therapy and start taking the ADs that the GP prescribed in the meantime?

You're freaking out, posting all over worrying about imagined diseases, and you know yourself that you're not well. You have a power to tackle HA, but you have to get on with it.
HA is your problem, not a mole.

hogshead · 13/04/2010 12:56

mine too was on my right bum cheek and caught sight of it in a hotel bathroom mirror on a hen night (of all the times to find something like that!!)

BUT it was new and i knew that it hadnt been there before, because of where it was i could be totally sure of that. I also have a slightly unusual medical history that makes me more prone to these things (i've had a lot of UV treatment over the years on the NHS and when i was very young)

Its the changes you need to be more aware of - if its been there years and not changed much then breathe!!! Even if it has changed you've got an appointment - i left mine for a total of 6 weeks before getting it checked out!

choclab · 13/04/2010 12:58

thanks i suffer with health anxiety , so any little trigger can set me off , i go every 6 months to get checked for my own peice of mind , sometimes i go more if im worried , but i read the post by hogshead , and started looking and remembered i do have one and then frightened myself as no one has ever checked it .....as i forgot it was there .. as i never see it ...

now scared as it is quite big , that its bad and all this time i havent had it checked out..... it has been there all my life i think ? certainly many years ...but couldnt say if was always that size etc ... so mind gone into overlad.....with fear ..

(wiping away tears )

teaandcakeplease · 13/04/2010 12:59

I haven't read the whole thread but have had 1 mole removed so far due to GP recommending it. It was benign.

They have told me as I've been back again from time to time to GP about them, (as I have a lot of moles on my back,) that if any of my moles becomes jagged around the edge with growth, rough on top or bleeding, that I should go back asap. HTH a little and best of luck on Friday.

teaandcakeplease · 13/04/2010 13:00

Oh just saw your last post - the GP said the size doesn't matter of the moles, as some of mine are overly large too, so I've asked that. It's the state of them as described.

winnybella · 13/04/2010 13:01

If it has been there for ages and, from how you described it, you have no reason to worry.

Really.

Just because a mole is big, doesn't mean you have cancer.

choclab · 13/04/2010 13:03

thanks hogshead ... trying to be calm about it , mine i know has been there for years , its not black or red or sore ect so thats good ...i hope

its me ...i know winny im sorry i hate myself so much right now i really do and i do want to change .

hope all is well with you now hogshead x

winnybella · 13/04/2010 13:04

And even when they are irregular (as teaand cakes says) it doesn't mean you have cancer, just that it's a good idea to get them checked out.

I have quite a few moles that actually look like the melanoma pics you google, but the last (and only) time I had them checked, they were fine.

winnybella · 13/04/2010 13:05

Don't hate yourself, you've no reason to, you are unwell with HA, it's not your fault.

It's a disease and as such needs to be treated.

choclab · 13/04/2010 13:23

right , got appt moved forward to this friday for check on this mole , and can remove if needs be , ....

thats better than waiting 2 weeks ...

im going crazy now ...

Tillyscoutsmum · 13/04/2010 14:05

choclab calm down .... please. Unless the mole has changed quite drastically and quite suddenly (over the last 8 weeks), then it really doesn't sound anything to worry about

OP posts:
Tillyscoutsmum · 13/04/2010 14:08

sorry - that sounded short - I am typing one handed whilst feeding DS... Hope you manage to get the required H.A treatment soon
