Have you been to the dr? I think a sudden change like that needs checkign out tbh. But in the meantime, I would avoid laxatives and try prune juice instead

purplepeony · 07/03/2010 19:46

Linseeds are very good- you have to make sure you drink plenty though.
You can buy them in supermarkets ( health food section)- and put on cereals, soups etc.
So are dried figs and prunes.

Are you getting enough fibre, drinking enough water and exercsing? Magnesium supplemtns are also good for bowels.

Pumphreydidit · 07/03/2010 19:51

Pineapple is a gentle laxative.

nickytwotimes · 07/03/2010 19:53

Fybogel

Lactulose

Prune juice

JaynieB · 07/03/2010 19:57

I'd second the Lactulose suggestion - very gentle.
Drinks lots of water too and I find dried apricots help too

EggyAllenPoe · 07/03/2010 19:57

all-bran. for breakfast, every morning.

strong coffee for a shorter-term fix.

or a night on 'Strong dry cider' seems to work.

I seem to remember someone on here recommending a cup of hot water with lemon juice in it in the morning.

specialsmasher · 07/03/2010 20:03

Porridge every morning seems to work for me. I was never particularly productive until I ate porridge.

JaynieB · 07/03/2010 20:45

Ho ho to strong dry cider
Soluble fibre - ie oats - better than bran?

nightcat · 07/03/2010 21:00

you could try probiotics (as well as any of the above)

specialsmasher · 07/03/2010 21:08

I don't know if oats are better than bran. I've only found that oats work. All Bran (anyway) is loaded with sugar and gross, IMO.

j0807bump · 07/03/2010 21:25

heard that a spoon of honey at night can help

lettuce esp flat of curly varieties do it for me but have a feeling this could be a personal thing not heard of it before in anyone else

EggyAllenPoe · 08/03/2010 09:19

all-bran is 27g fibre per hundred...porridge is 8.5g.

it does contain 11% sugar though that's not high in the context of packet cereals, certaily higher than the trace of sugar found in porridge.

NinthWave · 08/03/2010 09:46

Dried apricots or fresh grapes seem to do the trick here!

Chil1234 · 08/03/2010 10:17

Absolutely try eating three kiwifruit a day and drinking plenty of fluids. Kiwifruit have been shown in studies to have extremely good, natural laxative properties and, of course, they are extremely rich in vitamins and minerals as well.

Good luck but if the problem persists, see your doctor.

OliviaMumsnet · 08/03/2010 10:30

warm water

ppeatfruit · 08/03/2010 10:42

Yes Eggy, Madamdeath is right . Wheat used to give me constip. and the wheatbran might cause an effect you DON'T want .

porridge is brill. as special says.

the best thing i ever did was give up wheat altogether; even the 'wholewheat organic' stuff did not agree with me. You can buy non wheat bread, pasta etc. but check the labels there is hidden wheat in a lot of things.

NumberOneEnemy · 08/03/2010 10:43

delicious marks and spcner agen prunes

EggyAllenPoe · 08/03/2010 12:26

which is why snacking bran from the packet is a v. bad idea, whereas as having it wth milk works fine....

WeNeedToLeaveInFiveMinutes · 08/03/2010 18:10

Peppermint tea
dried apricots
dried figs
prunes
prune juice
water

mumtoted · 08/03/2010 18:14

Vitamin C tablets can have a mild laxative effect, 2 benefits in 1 pill

Curiousmama · 08/03/2010 18:16

I second the kiwifruit too. Also psyillium husks but you need to drink lots of water. They come in capsule form.

I would go to your GP though if this carries on.

Are you on any meds? Had any major stress?

Bonsoir · 08/03/2010 18:17

Golden linseeds - buy at a healthfood shop and sprinkle a spoonful over your breakfast cereal every morning.

kittyonthebeam · 08/03/2010 18:31

Have you ever tried okra? Ladyfingers they are also known as. Look for a nice curry receipe with them and off you are...to the loo

They are really good, full of fiber and water. I swear by it!!
