I tried posting here & apart from winnybella I was talking to myself

I am so worried about her sight, she can't see any colour and her vision is blurred & fragmented

Can you get migraines without any pain?

You must be very worried Katymac. But looking at your other thread, maybe the fact that they didn't keep her in hospital is a reassuring sign? What did the doctors say?

KurriKurri · 28/02/2010 21:56

Just looked at your other thread katy, did the hospital say they thought it was migraine?

You can get migraine as visual disturbance rather than pain - my DH gets them, but I would be very reluctant to suggest what it might be. Can you get her back to A&E if she it is getting worse?

pinkteddy · 28/02/2010 21:56

Sorry don't know anything about your history but have they tested for diabetes? Does she wear glasses - how is her eyesight generally?

Katymac · 28/02/2010 21:58

She isn't getting worse

I suppose being let home is a good sign - I hadn't thought of it that

I'm just all wibbly about it - she has had enough crap recently - I suppose there is even a possibility it is stress related

The Dr had never seen anything like it before & neither had his boss (who specialises in this sort of problem)

She had glasses for about a year when she was about 5 for being longsighted

Her eyesight has been fine recently we are due to see the optitions in about 2 weeks (so regular appointments)

I didn't think about diabetes

The signs and symptoms of diabetes are:

  • Increased thirst
  • Going to the loo (for a wee) all the time especially at night
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Weight loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Genital itching or regular episodes of thrush
  • Slow healing of wounds

Anything else sound familiar?

Katymac · 28/02/2010 22:07

She was sent home from school on Thursday with dizzyness

On Friday she had double vision but it went blurry on Saturday but by today she was both double & blurry

After 30 minutes on the phone to NHSDirect they sent us to the local hospital & after a 2 hr wait they sent us to the bigger hospital

The Dr did lots of tests & gave her drops but he is at a loss

I get visual migraines without the headaches or any pain. My peripheral vision goes and it's like looking into a kaleidoscope. Luckily the disturbance goes after 15 mins or so but I know it can vary for others.

Katymac · 28/02/2010 22:08

Not really Pinkteddy - she drinks a lot but she used to have enuresis so she had too.

But she is full of energy & gaining weight

OP posts:
Katymac · 28/02/2010 22:11

kaleidoscope that makes sense

She had 4 or 5 versions of everything (Dr said double vision was only ever 2)

There are times when it goes away then it comes back

OP posts:
Katymac · 28/02/2010 22:19

I think I can cope with the idea of a migraine

Still hope school send her home tomorrow

God how awful for you (and her). I lost some sight (and colour) without any significant pain because of an inflammation of the optic nerve.
I'm sure the hospital wouldn't have let her go without checking out her optic nerve... did she see a neurologist? An opthalmology person? Did they do any scans?
If not and if you are still worried I would nip back to A&E tomorrow and demand a CT scan or MRI, and kick up a right old stink until you see a neurologist.
I'll bet it's not what I had, but really it's not worth messing around with sight. Don't let them fob you off.

Katymac · 28/02/2010 22:27

Scans will be on Wed or Thurs I think (should I wait that long?)

She def saw a sight person

Did yours come back?

Poor dd, you must be very worried. Can only suggest you might want to have a look at the RNIB website, see if anything there rings any bells?

Hope you get the right sort of help or that it goes away and never comes back.

ElizabethWakefield · 28/02/2010 22:38

I used to get migraines with only visual disturbance and no pain. They were mostly caused by the contraceptive pill, but I still occasionally get them.

I get the kaleidoscope thing mentioned previously, and some degree of colour loss, but not completely. It never lasts more than half an hour and I can see it starting, progressing, then beginning to go, not sure if that makes sense.

I really wouldn't send her to school tomorrow, it must be really disorientating for her and I can't imagine how she could follow lessons, read etc.

I know you said you have had problems with regards to attendance, but I really don't think it would be fair to send her in.

CarmelitaMiggs · 28/02/2010 22:41

Yes colours did come back (I've lost a lot of sight in that eye since then but that's a whole other story ) -- like I say, I'm sure this isn't what is happening here, but who wants to risk it, right?

Where are you? Can you get into Moorfields in London tomorrow? They have a walk-in emergency dep and a neurologist is always rattling around. This is THE eye place. I don't think anyone there would think you were over-reacting, either.

For your hosp to say you have to wait till Wed or Thurs for scans is, imo, excessively casual when you're dealing with a child's sight.

Have got to go to bed but will check in tomorrow. Don't panic, sure it'll be fine, but you want someone who knows their onions to take a look at her and soon.

ElizabethWakefield · 28/02/2010 22:43

I also meant to ask if she was on any medication, I had medication once that really effected my eyesight, but I assume the hospital may have picked up on that.

CarmelitaMiggs · 28/02/2010 22:44

Moorfields info here -- you can call them in the morning at any rate

edam · 28/02/2010 22:45

Great idea from Carmelita. Moorfields also operate services for other trusts all over the country so you may find they run something nearer to you (IIRC you are some distance from London.)

Katymac · 28/02/2010 22:46

She has normal asthma medication nothing else (but she was on steroids a while ago)

Oh hell I don't know what to do - she can go to eye casualty at the local hospital but the big hospital said that there was no point as they would only do what they did today
