Any ideas about boosting, balancing dds immune system?

Dd had glandular fever as some of you will have read. It keeps coming back and she catches everything going. At the moment she has a nasty skin thing going on linked to glandular fever called erythema multiforme. She looks like a bowl of bubble wrap. She gets run down really easily and I was wondering if there is anything I can do to help her. I think people are starting to think i'm a hypochondriac because she has always got something.

Did she have anti-biotics for the illnesses? If so, it's well worth giving her a course of pro-biotiocs to rebalance her system. (The anti-biotics kill off healthy microflora so it's worth replacing it). Get Acidophulus Bifodus from the health food shop (powder) and sprinkle it in water or juice ever day.

Echinacaea is also great for boosting the immune system. Take a good long course of that.

Obviously great food, lots of water and plenty of rest.

Good luck.

lucy5 · 14/07/2005 16:32

Shes had 2 lots of antibiotics in 2 years, 1 being recently. Are probiotics and acidophulus bifodus the same thing. Sorry I'm not very clued up.

I reseached alternative treatments for my ds when he was little as he only had to go outside to catch another cold or get an ear infection - put him on Astragulas - chinese herb which boosts the immune system - I used this one which is avaliable in health food shops -

IMMUNOKID Produced by: Nature's Answer Distributed by: Country Life/Biochem

I think this has echinacea in it too

He started Pre-school after I started him on it and did not get one infection - I ran out once and within a week he got a horrendous chest infection - he stayed on it then for the rest of the school year - cannot recommended it highly enough!

Good luck

spidermama · 14/07/2005 16:35

Yes they are. Live yogurt is another way of getting pro-biotics. Sound like you need a bigger does though.

One idea - did you know that sugar surpresses the immune system? Best go light on the sugar for a bit.

sorrel · 14/07/2005 16:36

agree spidermama echinacea is what i would recommend. There is one for children made by Blackmores. or have a look here

Thanks, thats given me a good starting point. Great I can order over the internet as i'm in Spain, so its easier to do it in my own language. I'll check out Spanish shops first.

lucy5 try calling Jo Dunbar at www.botanicamedica.co.uk

She specialises in this sort of thing, I remember she said that people often rush into boosting immune systems when they should be concentrating on building up the adrenal glands first (or some such thing)

I can highly recommend her, she sorted me right out when I had glandular fever, she specialises in this sort of thing.

lucy5 · 14/07/2005 17:44

Will have a look now countess, im trying to find a specialist here. This has been going on for too ling, I need to get it sorted.

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 14/07/2005 18:56

oh yes it was vile

Lots of threads on it if you search my name and glandular fever!

AnnieSG · 14/07/2005 19:47

Lucy5, not quite the same thing, but my eldest ds was constantly sick for his first two winters. I was so worried that he was destined to be a sickly soul and it was awful. Lots of older people said 'Ah, but it'll really get his immunity working well,' and I thought, 'yeah, yeah' but you know, they were right. Don't want to tempt fate but he's amazingly robust now, at six. We call him Old Iron Guts sometimes when the rest of us have some hideous stomach malady and he's only ended up with a tiny touch of wind or something. The GF might make your daughter hardy later. Good luck anyway.

lucy5 · 14/07/2005 20:12

Thanks annie, I hope so because at the moment she always seems to be ill, although she is very perky when shes not. I just feel people think im making it up because its so frequent.

i caught glandular fever when i was a teenager and i was so ill i couldnt even feed myself. and ever since then if i get too stressed or overworked i canstart to feel throat symptoms, by that i mean iget my glands up in my neck and feel wiped out , try homeopathy to boost her immune system plus echinacea but you have to stop after about a month /6 weeks to let your body rest or whatever before taking some more, im not quite sure why, but i would go with homeopathy as ive hasd some amazing results with my kids

lucy5 · 14/07/2005 21:44

Thanks bambi, I'm going to investigate and see if I can find a homeopath.

Lucy5

I had glandular fever aged 6 when we lived overseas and I was hospiliased at one stage as I was so ill, then had to go for convalesance for a while - it took ages (apparently) for me to recover - it is quite unusual to get it at this age so probably it will have a greater effect on a 6 year old? The best thing (if there is one) about having it then is when all my friends caught it in their teens I did not get it - the only one in my group - not much help now I know

Good luck and would deff go for the homeopathic method where they try and support the adrenals etc - I reguarly see a Kneisologist who is very good

lucy5 · 15/07/2005 10:11

Thanks fimac. What exactly is a kneisologist? DD alot better today, really grumpy so its probably a good sign.
