Tingling in hands and feet.

For the last month or so I've had this odd tingling/buzzing in my hands and feet. Started in my left foot and GP thought it might be my back and so I've been seeing a physio (have had back problems on and off for ages). But now its also in my other foot and my left hand. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Viral thing? Pretty sure not massively serious as otherwise I feel well etc. Bit stressed at work and have 2 LOs under 4, the usual. Guess I will go back to the GP but putting it off as fear he'll just say it's one of those things or a virus... Any thoughts gratefully received!

I have tingling / pins and needles sometimes in my hands and feet and occassionally my cheek or my lips. Doc thinks it was down to anxiety. He also said it could be down to a deficiency of a mineral (can't remember which one, calcuim maybe) but did a blood test and ruled that out but apparently could appear as tingling sensation.

Can you go back to Docs for some more tests?

SydneyB · 23/02/2010 13:39

Thanks Makingchanges - I had wondered if it was down to anxiety in that now I've noticed it I notice it all the time if you see what I mean? Although maybe its been there for years without me picking up on it. Had some blood tests about a year ago and they were all normal.

I have this too and I worry about MS in darker moments, but also have some back issues and my thyroid is up and down which can also cause it.B12 deficiency can be an issue too,so get your thyroid checked and your B12.

noddyholder · 23/02/2010 13:46

I was investigated for ms and turned out to have b12 deficiency.i wish they'd discovered it before they put the fear of god in me with scans etc.The injections have been a godsend

SydneyB · 23/02/2010 13:46

I'm firmly of the school of thought that if there is something seriously wrong then you know about it! MS, I believe, does not manifest itself that way and I think frequently visual disturbances are the first sign so Hellymelly, I don't think we should worry about that. Might try the B12/Thyroid test then but can these things come on suddenly like that? Does your thryoid suddenly malfunction?

noddyholder · 23/02/2010 13:48

I didn't have visual probs and they still thought MS.

SydneyB · 23/02/2010 13:50

But you don't have it do you?

OP posts:
noddyholder · 23/02/2010 14:18

No I don't but I presented with tingling hands feet and mouth/tongue and it was their 1st thought which surprised me tbh

SydneyB · 23/02/2010 14:56

Oh god. Now I'm worried. Guess I'd better go to GP then...

Anyone fancy coming on here and giving me plausible non-MS diagnosis?

noddyholder · 23/02/2010 16:01

So sorry i meant to reassure you!I had a lot of tingling and when I swa my gp who noticed the low b12 he said I was classic. After the first injection I could feel a difference.

SydneyB · 23/02/2010 16:05

Thanks Noddy! Did you have any other symptoms? I don't have the tingling mouth, just both feet and one hand at the moment. The ends of my big toes have been numb for the last year or so but I think that's unrelated...

OP posts:
SydneyB · 23/02/2010 16:07

And I often wake up in the night/morning with totally numb hands but figured that's probably sleeping on them.

noddyholder · 23/02/2010 16:11

I had tips of both big toes completely numb aswell one returned the other is permanent damage.really tired a sleepy feeling.my legs felt heavy.

SydneyB · 23/02/2010 16:17

Oh blimey, does sound like it could be B12 then I guess. Right, off to GP in the morning. Do you mind if I ask how old you are? I'm 38.

noddyholder · 23/02/2010 16:22

I am 44 had the symptoms for 5 yrs.I really thought it was MS had myself convinced and had tests too.The numb toes scared me!Do you have any other symptoms?I had a list and can't find it and can't remember.I did used to get irrationally down about some things which was out of character and it has hugely improved too Excessive worry iykwim about health/family myds etc

SydneyB · 23/02/2010 16:26

Did you have to ask for a special test or is B12 one they do with a blood test? I have been feeling quite anxious but have put that down to a nearly full time job and 2 small kids. I am tired but again, that feels normal with my lifestyle. Had a blood transfusion when DS was born 16 months ago and was a little anaemic after that but it cleared up.

OP posts:
noddyholder · 23/02/2010 16:32

I didn't have classic anaemia. My red blood count was good but they were big and my gp spotted it.Ask for teh test specifically as they do another one at the same time which is related.I had my latest jab 10 days ago and I was really ready for it as I started getting really tired again and tingly mouth.GP has decided to give me every 2 months now

SydneyB · 23/02/2010 16:34

Ok will do. Getting ahead of myself here, but basically you just have regular injections and that's it?

OP posts:
noddyholder · 23/02/2010 16:42

Yes I had them every other day for 2 weeks to top up and then every 3 months for life x

SydneyB · 23/02/2010 16:46

And it just came out of nowhere to start with? Sorry for all the questions. Should probably save them for GP tomorrow!

OP posts:
noddyholder · 23/02/2010 16:48

No it was gradual a bit of tingling here and there and a few times I thought it improved but eventually it just got really bad and I insisted on further tests

hellymelly · 23/02/2010 22:51

My DH was b12 deficient and he had the jabs and was a different person, like 10 years younger! My Bf has an underactive thyroid too and she had numbness in one foot, tingling etc. They initially were worried about MS with her and she has no visual probs but bloods showed her thyroid was the problem.

alypaly · 24/02/2010 09:45

anxiety can cause the capillaries in the hands and feet to close down which in turn causes the tingling. If you try and forget about it,it may well go away, but heightened worrying could make it worse. Kind of vicious circle i reckon

SydneyB · 24/02/2010 12:40

Thanks all. Saw very nice GP this morning who has referred me for blood tests and to a neurologist. Said it could be MS but it could also be lots of other things and may well just go away.. Appointments aren't for another 10 days or not so going to try and relax and forget about it until then as yes, am sure anxiety is not helping symptoms.
