WHY is sparkling water bad for you?

Heathcliffscathy · 12/02/2010 14:59

is it really bad for you? bad like coke? bad like what?

i vaguely remember something about leeching calcium, but assuming that you're eating A LOT OF CHEESE CAUSE YOU'RE PREGNANT doesn't that counterbalance things?

I just thought the phosphorous damaged teh teeth? Am sure you can replace teh calcium if that bit's correct

ShinyAndNew · 12/02/2010 15:01

Sparkling water is bad for you? I'm bolloxed then, that was to be my next step in my attempt to stop slowly killing myself with my caffiene addiction and fear of water.

WHat about flavoured water? It's the only non fizzy, non caffinated cold drink I can stand. And even then I don't particularly like it.

VengefulKitty · 12/02/2010 15:02

I had no idea sparkling water was bad for you! Oh dear...

Heathcliffscathy · 12/02/2010 15:02

damages teeth more than say cocacola?

i really like sparkling water, but am prepared to be convinced that i'm doing myself a grave injury by drinking it.

i know it's unethical etc by the way, but a girl's gotta have a vice!

not bad like coke thats for certain cos coke has about 20 teaspoons of sugar in it. I didnt think sparkilng was bad for you at all

Heathcliffscathy · 12/02/2010 15:03

i'm pretty sure someone scientific is about to post saying it is heinous stuff and you definitely shouldn't drink it. or ever give it your children.

The Guardian says you can drink it Phew!

GrimmaTheNome · 12/02/2010 15:09

I can't imagine its any different to still mineral water - which is usually high in calcium. The carbonation might affect the pH a little but I doubt enough to make any real difference.

Sounds like an urban myth to me.

Skegness · 12/02/2010 15:11

Never knew sparkling water was bad! www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1235563/Champagne is good for you, apparently, if you need sparklingness.

Skegness · 12/02/2010 15:14

link

Skegness · 12/02/2010 15:18

arrrgh- it's not even rlevant to the thread but I must get it right!

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/02/2010 12:45

was worried then

i drink normally 2litres of sparkling water a day

much nicer than still tap water

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 14/02/2010 12:47

I think the gas that causes the bubbles gives you cellulite. But in my case the boat has sailed on that one!

expatinscotland · 14/02/2010 12:49

I love it! San Pelligrino with a twist of orange. Mmmm. If I won the Lotto, I'd buy it by the case and drink it all day.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/02/2010 12:51

expat, i like the twist of lemon one

expatinscotland · 14/02/2010 13:00

with crushed strawberries in teh bottom of the glass and a sprig of mint, Blondes. Mmmmm.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 14/02/2010 13:01

The price of the San Pelligrino flavoured stuff is bloody criminal.

I really like it but the cost is just horrendous. When I do buy it I justify it to myself by reminding myself that I don't smoke or drink, so that's my luxury I'm so rock and roll

StealthPolarBear · 14/02/2010 13:03

I drink loads of it! Think people lump it in with "fizzy drinks"

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/02/2010 13:06

oh, never tried that - sounds just like pimms

thedollshouse · 14/02/2010 13:11

I normally drink a lot of sparkling water but since I have been pregnant it has given me the most painful heartburn.

ArcticFox · 14/02/2010 14:01

There's no evidence that it's bad for you.

That just comes from all these hippy "holistic nutritionalist" advisors (like "Doctor" McKeith- i.e. PHd off the internet)

Ignore and imbibe.

thislittlesisterlola · 14/02/2010 17:53

san pelligrino i agree is amazing. Thought i was in a minority. Flavoured ones i pray do tell! I knew nothing about these where could i purchase it please i like to ...? Is it bottled or canned? (very excited emotion) am pg and running out of nice soft drinks and bit sick of cordial

expatinscotland · 14/02/2010 18:27

it's better than Pimm's, Blonde, fewer calories and no drunkeness/hangover!

i like the lemon twist one, too, but for economy's sake i usually make me own lemon or lime twist.

mmm, nothing like a cold San Pelligrino with a twist of lime on a hot day . . .

fledtoscotland · 14/02/2010 22:46

had a slight panic when I started reading this thread as I hate still water.

have now taken a big deep breath and another swig of my sparkling highland spring....

Kewcumber · 14/02/2010 22:55

phosphoric acid in some fizzy drinks does leach calcium but I'm not sure that what extent. But it would have to be a pretty odd bottle of fizzy mineral water to have phosporic acid in it! Phosphoric acid is used as a flavouring (gives a tangy taste) not for the fizziness.

Just water and CO2 in fizzy water as far as I'm aware.
