smear tests

I'm being totally pathetic, but I'm really dreading having a smear test, despite having had several and a baby! I'm not frightened of what they might find, just the mechanics of the actual test - is anyone else as bad as me ? When my son was born I had the works- episiotomy, ventouse and forceps,so I shouldn't fear a teeny speculum ! My doctor is really nice and understanding (I've had v unsympathetic ones in the past- maybe that's a reason why I'm scared). I've written suitable dates to go in my diary, but wimped out, telling myself I need more time to psych myself up.

I have also been there.

In August 2000, I was diagnosed with having an abnormal smear and had to go back for another one. This time they found pre-cancerous cells and I had to go for a colposcopy.

Because I had private health care through work, I decided to go private and was seen within the week. The colposcopy in itself wasn't too bad although I had to abstain from sex for 6 weeks after. They also took a biopsy which came back showing clear. They also took another smear test.

This one also came back showing abnormal cells and I had to go for another colposcopy in January last year. This time I just waited for my appointment at the NHS hospital.

During the colposcopy, my doctor this time said that he thought everything would be fine just by looking at my cervix. He took another smear and this time it came back clear.

I then fell pregnant and had a baby in October 2001.

I am now due for another smear test - because I had so many abnormal smears and had two have two colposcopies they like to keep a check on me.

I had the coil fitted 4 weeks ago and have to go back in 2 weeks to have it checked. I will have my smear done then - fingers crossed, everything will still be fine.

Lizzer, fingers crossed for this month. Dont worry (easier said than done - I know!!) let us know how you get on. x

Hello!!! Am back and it was fine. Firstly the doctor told me that the actual smear they took was NEGATIVE! (I was only referred there as they couldn't get a reading from a smear - grrr!!) But the biopsy had shown a v v small patch of cells that had looked suspect. He said that they would probably be fine but that this treatment was just a precaution. He also said that he didn't think I'd ever have to return for more treatment (his words - 99.9% sure I wouldn't) in the next 3 yrs - yay! So the actually treatment was also fine, even better than initial investigation as I had local anasthetic which I didn't even feel. It was quick and the nurses were lovely. Sorry for being such a drama queen about it all, I don't have ANY discomfort as yet, and the only downside is the huge tube of cream I have to apply every day for 2 weeks. I'm off for a break to my friend's house in Norfolk for a week tomorrow and asked if it was ok swimming (brilliant leisure centre there that dd loves) and the doc said fine, so am totally at ease now. 'Speak' to you all in a week and thanks for such lovely messages of support as ever, you lot are great!!

Great to have some good news on the board, Lizzer.

BTW, I don't think you were being a drama queen - these kind of things really make you think, that's all.

Fantastic news Lizzer - glad it was all OK after all.
I'm late to this thread, and didn't contribute earlier, but also had laser treatment quite a few years ago.
I had very few after affects, other than a few crampy pains and some bleeding for a few days as things 'healed' apparently (which I wasn't told about in advance).
If you're going away for a few days, perhaps make sure you pack some painkillers and tampons (i wasn't sure whether it would be OK to use tampons again so soon, but was told it was OK..)
Enjoy your break...

wendym · 13/02/2002 12:53

That's great Lizzer - hope you enjoy the break.
