Hi Candy, I think this is your problem

Pennies · 05/02/2010 11:50

It's most likely to be a stress reaction. I've had it before during a period of great stress in my life (grief).

candyfluff · 06/02/2010 17:25

i did think this was likely to be the case - i saw my gp and she said my throat looked inflammed and gave me a weeks worth of ab's and aslo gave me a blood test form for a thyroid function test if it doesnt clear up
my aunty and nan on my dads side both have thyroid problems
right now feels like im being strangled tbh
contemplating taking ye olde diazepam to maybe get rid of it

ive had globus hystericus and it stayed with me for about 3 months just after i lost my mum. I was sure i had food stuck and that i had a lump.

It felt horrible during the day ,but disappeared at night whilst i slept which kind of confirmed it was stress related.

It really distressed me for weeks and i kept going back to the docs thinking i'd got cancer of the throat or something horrible.
Has a camera down my throat, but they couldnt see anything. Then had a barium swallow.
It went away as quickly as it came.

I was told its because the normal muscle contractions(peristalsis) go out of synch and thats why you feel a lump.

candyfluff · 07/02/2010 13:17

thanks alypaly - this last few weeks have been very stressful for me - my dh is ill with depression again and my little ds was choking on something and we had to get the paramedics out to him - thankfully by the time they came it went down ,also my big ds is going to cbt for anxiety so you can cut the atomsphere at home with a knife.
some days its ok then other times its worse so if it was something bad im sure it wouldnt come and go xx

im sure you are right candy...mine did the same. If i was busy or doing things i enjoyed,i sort of forgot about it. It was only when i was sitting doing nothing and dwelling on things or worrying that i was choking that made it worse. A vicious circle i guess.

how old is DS1...It must be difficult for him living with a parent with depression. I know first hand as my mum had anxiety/depression for as long as i can remember. It did rub off on me and i have had periods in my life where i have suffered from depression and at one point had a nervous breakdown.
Is DH very poorly or is he able to work.
you sound as though you have alot on your plate at the moment

candyfluff · 08/02/2010 11:09

neither of my parents had depression so not sure where i got it from tbh - life events - post natal depression - my son will be 4 this year and im still on ad's scared to come off them really
dh had a week off with it but gone back this week
ive also got an incredibly dry mouth - its so uncomfortable, got some saliva pastilles from boots but they dont work too well.
got ds's (11yrs) cbt group tomorrow - not looking forward to that all the parents go in one room and the kids is another and we all chat about it ,its and hour and half long and dh cant come with us as he needs to stay at home with the other 2 kids ,we havent got anyone to have the kids for us so im feelling its all down to me to make him better,he was up half the night last night because he had a nightmare and was panicing about not being able to go back to sleep - its so wearing

OP posts:
alypaly · 08/02/2010 12:00

candy ,i was on them for 5 years after DS1 so dont worry. If you need them ,take them.I still take them intermittently now when i cant sleep.16 years down the line.

Are the pastilles Salivix. There are also ones called SST tablest to stimulate saliva. Is it due to your AD's as they cause mouth dryness.

was it DH who had the nightmare or DS.
It is horrible feeling as tho you have to do everything. Ive been a sp for 16 years so i know what its like. Its alot of pressure.

candyfluff · 08/02/2010 12:23

it was ds who had the nightmare - he came down stairs in the end and went to the pc,yes ive had a whole box of 50 since last weekend (salivix) ive never had dry mouth on these ad's in all the time ive been taking them.so dont think its that tbh
this dry mouth is making me feel panicky really - scared i wont be able to swallow - do you think i should go and see the gp
i was only there on friday about my throat

which AD's are you on?

What i think is happening is a 'small' panic attack, which is getting bigger. You are worrying about the lump in your throat...this is creating anxiety...which is causing more adrenalin to be released and too much adrenalin causes a dry mouth.
You will be fine honestly...a had exactly the same thing...it is a panic attack. set you a link to help you cope.
Just tell yourself you havent got anything in your throat otherwise you would be dead by now and then take small sips of water whenever you want. If you mouth is so dry you can get a synthetic saliva spray(i know it sounds disgusting) called Glandosane. It comes in mint, lemon or flavourless.

You are under alot of stress at the moment and you body is saying i am not coping. Look after yourself too as you dont want to go under with all this going on.www.npadnews.com/anxiety-symptoms.asp

thanks xxx
is it over the counter meds?

OP posts:
candyfluff · 08/02/2010 12:47

my mouth is dry to look at dh said so too

OP posts:
alypaly · 08/02/2010 12:48

you can get glandosane on a prescription or you can buy it ,but it is about £8-10 depending on where you go.....

alypaly · 09/02/2010 00:18

i reckon the doc would probably come to the same conclusion. You havent got any other symptoms like dry eyes or achey joints have you.

alypaly · 11/02/2010 23:45

how is your throat candy....any better?

ThatVikRinA22 · 11/02/2010 23:51

could also be something as simple as silent reflux. see your gp.

candyfluff · 05/04/2010 11:29

hi all - thought i would revive my thread as its still there and its getting bigger
ive definatly got a lump on my right side of my neck and you can actually just about see it when looking in the mirror - im freaking out right now and thats not helping - im going to get an appointemnt tomorrow with my gp ,does anyone have any ideas what it could be? im too scared to google it

Hi candy, have you had a bad cold lately, could be an inflamed gland. I think I have GLobus at times, I used to always think my asthma was playing up. You wont know for sure till you see your GP, will be thinking about you, let us know how you get on, good luck.

candyfluff · 05/04/2010 15:15

i do have a cold at the moment but this has been getting worse for 3 months now ,im open to the idea it could be globus but its only on the one side and is visable from the outside unlike globus, also my voice is gravelly and im short of saliva too - going to get an appointment first thing in the morning.
i am scared though

i have a lump on one side - could it be a cyst maybe - its so very uncomfortable and when i lie down im literally being strangled
very unpleasent

OP posts:
feelsilly · 05/04/2010 17:00

I dont think you can see globus someone will correct me if I am wrong, I remember my mum going to A& E a few months back with a blocked salivary gland it cleared within a few hours but i think if they block sometimes you need antibiotics to clear them and they can take alot longer, am just suggesting other reasons for this to be happening. Also if your glands swell up when you have a cold sometimes the pus inside them can solidify into little calculi and again you need AB's to shift them.
When you saw your GP was it just thyroid function he tested, or did he test full blood count as well?

candyfluff · 05/04/2010 17:05

yes had the thyroid test and a course of ab's incase it was an infection - the bloods came back normal
