Anyone had experience of MA in teenagers. Trying to figure out if my daughter has this as doctors are useless. She has had several episodes of feeling sick, very sore stomach and occasional vomiting after having a bug. Off food, weight loss, exhausted. Awful to see her like this and doctors don't seem to take it seriously:(

SmellOfBurntWiggle · 29/05/2012 14:52

Sounds awful, Filu. Hope she's better now... did you find out what it was?

Aloe vera juice smuggled into morning orange juice co-incided with my DS suddenly getting much better.

Reluctant to tout it as some kind of miracle cure (esp having read the allergic reactions thread to aloe vera on here) but the timing of his recovery really struck me.

My 15 year old daughter had her appendix out 2 weeks ago, which turned out to be healthy, I have been told she has this condition. All our doctor has told us is that it will clear up soon. Shes still in awful pain and is on 4 different types of painkillers, she's also lost alot of weight and looks so poorly. I came across this site and was very suprised to learn thst this is an ongoing thing. Any advice anyone could give would be hugely appreciated, I don't see how much longer she can tolerate it. Many thanks, Mel.

funnyperson · 23/06/2012 09:34

Think the docs should be asked to see your daughter again melwright

MelWright · 25/06/2012 12:02

Hi, I have had her seen again and have been told to 'hang in there' as it will clear up on its own, so frustrating!

Hi to all
I have been reading your blog for MA and would like to share my experience with you. I am an adult male in my mid 60's and three days ago after eating a large meal - my stomach started to ache real bad so I went to bed. I thought maybe it was food poisioning.Stayed in bed Friday afternoon and after decided to eat a small piece of bread the next morning with a small amount of soda. A hour later my stomach felt like world war three. Went to bed again and stayed there until night time and pain got worst with diahrrea and also nausea and throwing up. My stomach by this time had expanded so much that the pain was a 9.5 out of 10. Could not eat or drink anything as I would throw it up.
Was rushed to the emergency room and got a Ct scan and was told of a blockage in the lower intestines. Got a tube down into my stomach and immediately began sucking of a half liter of bile. Was told - had I not gotten to the hospital when I did - things could have ruptured inside.
Got admitted into the hospital and was given a whole lot of morphine for pain. The morphine did not touch the pain and did not sleep at all. Sunday morning saw the doctor and got a x-ray of my abdomen. Doctor was perplexed as he did not understand why my lymph nodes were inlarged in my stomach. I told him I had just gotten over the flu last week. That is when I was told I probably had MA and that is what immobolized my lower intestines. I told him morphine had done nothing for pain all night - and he got me tordol - a non narcotic anti inflammatory. Within 15 minutes the pain left me and my stomach calmed down. The bile that was accumulating and being pumped out slowed down. Also must say a lot of prayers were being lifted up for me. I was able to leave the hospital Christmas eve and my lower intestines are no longer clogged up and was able to eat a small meal for Christmas.

Here is my concern - after being diagnosed with MA -I am not seeing anything similiar with everything else in this blog. Could not have lasted 3 days before going to the emergency room without the possibility of rupturing. Yes I had enlarged lymph nodes and was told was the contributing factor for my small intestines shutting down.

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who could shed some light on my MA diagnosis.
Merry Christmas

hi I had this as a young teen - quite a few times it would flare up and I'd be in agony but my mum thought I was making it up / had wind!

I then had it on a school residential trip and was blue lighted to hospital aged 14. they were about to whip it out but ran other tests and diagnosed this.

I was always told it was triggered by a virus enflaming the gland near the appendix ( I'm sure something to do with birds and cats???? hazy memory - but we lived in the middle of nowhere and had lots of animals)

I eventually seemed to either grow out of it or beat it. my sister had it briefly too. I suppose the hardest thin is recognising the difference between this an a real appendix problem.

after recent bored googling I found it can have a range of causes and be in a few different places so I imagine affects people differently?

hope all feel better soon.

Clarella · 27/12/2012 09:02

I would 'cope' with hotwater bottles and paracetamol - it was pretty horrid.

Hi All, our son was recently diagnosed with MA. After 2 trips to the emergency room and several trips to our primary care physician, we found this site. He was still having the stabbing pains almost daily and did not have much appetite. Our doctor said it could be constipation which we had to consider a possibility. The doc prescribed an oral laxative and our son definitely benefited from that. However, the next day the pain returned but not quite as bad this time. We were intrigued by the mention of Aloe Juice mentioned here and we felt that it was time to give it a try starting with 4 oz per day. It was almost as if we turned a switch off that next day. Our son was back to normal and he has been doing great for 2 weeks now. We are going to keep him on it for the foreseeable future as all of his symptoms have gone away. Hope this helps anyone else who might be at their wits end with MA. Take care all !

Thanks to all of you who have added, over all those years, to this topic - my DD (12) was diagnosed with this today, although ANother GP told us about it 4 days ago, he didn't explain it well enough or give it a name. So we went back today and the female dr was more helpful...!

Thanks for the tips about gluten, aloe vera juice and even not sleeping on her back - I will give them a go.

Reading this makes me wonder if the DD, having had her tonsils removed last summer, will now find this is her 'bug of choice'. She is down to 70% attendance in her first year at secondary school. Not good for her education, social life or family life come that. Reassuring though as I had started to be concerned that she was avoiding school. Fingers crossed she makes it back for the last 3 days of term Smile

My 13 year old child was diagnosed with Mesenteric Adenitis after being in the hospital and having a blood test and cat scan. When they gave her morphine the pain in her side went away and it is my understanding that with appendicitis the morphine has no effect. The doctor’s in the ER as well as her family physician said there was nothing they could do except treat the symptoms. This basically involved administering pain medicine. Per the reviews in this blog I tried the aloe vera juice with no success. I tried every homeopathic remedy I knew (ACV, castor oil packs, vitamin D, etc ) with no success. After 3 weeks I found an herbalist who recommended “Black Seed Oil”. This is cumin oil (CO) and we used the “cold pressed” version and used ½ teaspoon 3x’s per day. (Probably could have given 1 teaspoon 3x’s per day but I tend to take the conservative approach.) Immediately upon starting the CO my child’s symptoms started to clear up and eventually the MA went away. This was a very disturbing sickness as because my child had no appetite and could only take food in small doses so as not to cause abdominal pain. As a result a lot of weight was lost and a lot of time from school was missed. I can relate with everyone's distress regarding this illness and hope my review is able to help someone.

Mickie1975 · 24/02/2014 02:47

I am so grateful to have seen all this. I just googled mesenteric adenitis after getting a possible diagnosis of it with my 11 year old son. He's been perfectly happy/healthy until 3 weeks ago yesterday when he started with a mild fever, vomitting, nausea and intermittent stomach pains. We took him to the ER assuming it was appendicitis, and after an ambulance transfer to a bigger hospital by the dr who also suspected appendicitis, we had an overnight stay. They did 2 blood tests, and 2 ultrasounds (first one showed slightly swollen gland/node in abdomen, but never mentioned on second) as well as many physical exams. They decided it was either grumbling appendix (unlikely though) or MA. Sent us home the next day after an IV drip to rehydrate him (they wouldn't let him eat/drink nor did he have the appetite) saying to give him Tylenol for pain and come back IF it progressed. So after a few days the pains got lighter, and he went back to school, although they never fully went away. Then 2.5 weeks later on the Wednesday just passed, school called asking me to pick him up as he was worse. Again, pains a bit stronger, no appetite, nausea and shaky legs. I should also mention all pains from the get go were in the lower right abdomen. So back to the hospital we went after fetching my other 4 kids from school/home (toddler). Again they triaged him and took him into the ER. New drs assessed him and drew blood and ordered another ultrasound. Both came back fine, as did urine test. So again, another overnight in hospital with no food or drink and he developed a severe headache. We assumed it was due to lights/lack of good/ drink. They gave him Tylenol and said again, likely MA, go home and wait it

Mickie1975 · 24/02/2014 02:56

Out. 4 days after last visit, and 3 weeks after original visit, pains are still the same, and he still has severe headache which Tylenol are doing nothing for. He is eating/drinking good but still keeps getting shaky legs too. He is pale and looking quite sick. I'm very frustrated as he is missing school. Drs are reluctant to do CT scan due to radiation exposure. I am at a loss as to what I can do for my poor son. I am not too keen on a CT scan for him myself, but my mind is racing and this is scaring me. I'm afraid they may be wrong and it could be lymphoma or something equally as aweful but I am unsure what else to do. Going to search for aloe Vera juice (??) and I have already considered reducing gluten from his diet as a last ditch effort. I don't think either of us can handle another sleepless night on the ER, he can't keep missing school, my hubby can't keep taking off work to stay home with our other 4 kids and I am too stressed out to think straight. If anyone has any other ideas or suggestions about these symptoms please send them my way. Thanks so much.

My granddaughter on Monday was diagnosed with MA and it is driving us up the wall. Because not only does she have the tummy pain but also has nausea and dehydration. The vomiting is constant and anything and everything she eats or drinks comes right back out. We are afraid with all that is going on because she has not eaten in three days and like I said everything she drink s also comes right out. We don't know what to do about it any more. She has been hospitalized and was sent home because they said there is nothing they can do for her we just have to let it take it's course. But she is so weak from not eating that she can't even keep her eyes open anymore. CAn some one please help us out.

Kimcornfieldq · 11/03/2014 23:03

To kamakrsa. When you say that your child had relief with black seed oil "immediately" is that in just a few seconds, minutes, hours or days? I'm interested in trying anything at this point. It seems my 10 y-o is getting better but I don't want it to linger any longer. Please reply when you can. Your post is encouraging.

slosh009 · 24/03/2014 01:55

I just got diagnosed with MA a couple days ago and at age 32, was hopefully the first and last time. Having broken many bones playing hockey I can say I was in an insane amount of pain, Morphine took off the edge. From what I have read adults have less lymph tissue and thus is more likely to be inflammed from "whatever" the instigating reasoning is/was, mine unknown. Regardless the age be welcoming if your only experiencing minor or mild symptoms. The first day it woke me at 6am felt like someone just punched me in the stomach a constant burning sensation, horrible headache, and slight fever. After about 20 hours of this I had the worst attack. I was rolling on the floor trying to find any position that did not hurt from 1am-7am. The best I found by the way was to stand up or lay on my stomach, worst being on my side. The pain was so much I did not want to drive myself to the ER so I waited the whole following day with much the same pain to be drove. Since it was only a couple days ago I can say the worst part made minutes feel like hours, you feel the onset, then it feels like stabbing for a few minutes, then you hit the reset button for 10 minutes and start over. Also from all the reading I have done it seems like the worst for everyone seems to be at night for some reason. This is not something I would want a repeat experience with.

littleowl14 · 24/03/2014 19:42

not read whole thread but I suffered from this in my early teens, leading to a trip to hospital while on a school trip.

I would get it every few months - my mother would shrug it off as either wind or me trying to get out of school Hmm It was agonising, would last a couple of days and then I'd feel like my insides had been beaten up. honestly, I could actually deal with labour better as at least that came in waves rather than persistent pain. (as a consequence of having to cope with it I'm now very good at dealing with pain!)

when in hospital about to whip my appendix out they diagnosed me with MA (apparently they had to feel for something in my bottom to check this; very embarrassing for a 14 year old!). they also said it was caused by a virus, causing the gland around the appendix to swell. at least this is what I remember! it was 1991....

no advice as to how to deal with it other than back to back pain killers and hot water bottles. Thanks

littleowl14 · 24/03/2014 19:44

I eventually seemed to grow out of it.

littleowl14 · 24/03/2014 19:46

oh and it completely mimicked an appendicitis.

Pabstymz · 23/05/2014 07:39

My 7 year old daughter was diagnosed with MA about 8 weeks ago and has had it on and off since then, she is currently off school now. It has been a relief to see all these posts as I had never heard of this before. Calpol and neurofen do not seem to touch it and she always loses her appetite and becomes dehydrated. If she does eat it seems to make pain worse. I feel helpless as many of you are saying and also very concerned about the amount of time missed at school. Interesting comments about the aloe and black seed oil. The doctor we saw yesterday was very unhelpful, when I mentioned I was concerned about the amount of time off school he said "in my opinion she is well enough to go to school"! How does he know how much her tummy is hurting?! He also mentioned about it being psychological and to discuss with school to see if she has any problems there. I really don't think this is the case as she is generally a very happy girl.

Snowdrop123 · 28/06/2014 10:41

I really sympathise with anyone who has a child suffering from Messenteric Adenitis. My 7 year old daughter developed MA after a bout of scarlet fever back in January. We visited 5 different doctors who were all very unhelpful and told us to just give her calpol or ibuprofen. My daughter's pains were so bad she was writhing about in agony & completely inconsolable - the pain would come & go in the morning & progressively got worse as the day went on - late afternoon & evening was when the pain got the most intense & neither calpol nor ibuprofen worked & I was beside myself with worry. She was finally diagnosed with MA after our doctor sent her to hospital (after 11 days of intense pain) with a suspected umbilical hernia. After a scan at the hospital she was diagnosed with MA but not given any medication for it and were told to drink lots of fluids & it would pass. So we went home with a diagnosis but no help at all. Just through pure luck a friend of mine recommended I go back to my GP & ask him to prescribe an anti-colic medicine called Dicycloverine hydrochloride which my friend's daughter was prescribed when she had MA. We have never looked back since - after a day of taking this medicine we noticed a huge difference & my daughter's pain gradually subsided. My daughter had one spoonful 3 times a day (basically before every meal) - we continued this for 2 weeks until we were certain all pain was gone. This is just an anti-colic medicine but for us it was our life-saver! It is worth noting that MA can come back - my daughter recently had a bout of tonsillitis & the MA has come back (however nowhere near as bad as before thankfully) so we went back to our GP yesterday who has precribed some more Dicycloverine so hopefully we can nip it in the bud quickly this time! Hope this helps!

mandmsmummy · 31/10/2014 17:53

Hi
I wonder if I could join in...my ds1 (8) has had tummy ache this week on and off. It's enough to make him say he feels unwell but he's not in agony. We did have an episode a couple of months ago where we were sent to a and e incase of appendicitis but it wasn't. They mentioned his glands then and seeing this thread reminded me. If he gets poorly he always complains of a tummy ache and/or headache. Doc suggests constipation but he does go every other day. Could it be MA? Or are his symptoms too mild? X

kamakrsa · 10/01/2016 19:45

1/10/2016 Update. Wanted to give an update to this post. My child continued to have abdominal issues along with other symptoms. One thing I finally learned was that Mesenteric Adenitis is a symptom, not a cause. Mesenteric Adenitis is an inflammation of the lymph nodes in the abdomen. The job of lymph nodes is to remove bacteria, viruses, and toxins from the body. When a lymph node gets overloaded, then inflammation occurs. After many different doctor visits and tests, such as ultrasounds and a throat scope, we finally found a doctor who looked at all her test results and symptoms. After a year of suffering we were fortunate to find a doctor who not only reviewed all the test results, but conducted some of his own tests. My child was diagnosed with Lyme Disease and since then we have been treating the disease homeopathically with great success. I hope this post helps someone else who has been diagnosed with MA and left to figure out the cause.
