Hi everyone. My daughter has been suffering with MA for the last 3 weeks following a cold/viral infection that started with a sore throat.
She has been refusing to eat and crying all the time, even though the initial horrendous symptoms (as per appendicitis) have lessened.
The upshot of my logging on to this now is that in desperation I bought some Aloe Vera juice for her to have before two meals a day and after only three doses she is a changed girl!!
Thank you emlace for your suggestion, it has been invaluable.

I have just come across this website looking for information on MA. I currently have my 11 year old son at home with MA, he has been at home for nearly 2 weeks now and cabin fever is setting in for us both! This is the 3rd time he has had it, the first time he was 5yr old and then it reoccured 9 months ago and now this episode. I am so surprised and upset it has happened again so soon. I am fortunate to have a super GP who diagnosed the condition the 1st time and everytime he gets it is very supportive - I only wish he had a magic cure to make it go away and never come back!
My son complains of a slight tummy ache, then he is sick for 24 -48 hours and that is when the real tummy pain starts. We give him pain relief every 2 hours, alternating between paracetamol and ibuprofen ( to help reduce the inflamation) I use paracetamol suppositories (on prescription) especially when he is being sick - I highly recommend them!
I am very interested to read about the Aloe Vera and as I am taking it myself have it in the house and so today I have given him a dose. Do you think it is worth taking it all the time not only when he is sick?
The problem he has now is that he hasn't eaten properly since it started and he is now hungry but everytime he eats even a small amount he gets pains - I don't know if that is because his tummy is not used to food or that his gut is still inflammed. I have read that MA doesn't normally affect appetite but that is certainly not the case with my son. What are the experiences of others?
How long does it normally last? - we are averaging 3 weeks - it is a frightening amount of school to miss let alone every else.
I am glad I have found this web discussion, it seems as if MA is quite common but I have not found it in general medical books and sometimes I get the feeling medics don't like diagnosing this condition? or perhaps they don't know much about it?

My 9 year old son has been at home for five weeks with MA and have been very interested in the Aloe Vera suggestion. I've started giving it to him today hoping that it will help and that this wretched condition will improve. My son is due back at school tomorrow after the Christmas break and I'm really concerned that he is going to fall behind on his school work. There is absolustely no way that he could get through the demands of a school day at the moment. I think it's difficult for friends/teachers to be sympathetic due to the symptoms appearing and disappearing. People keep asking whether my son is upset or worried about anything and whether that might be the underlying cause of his tummy pain. He's become very thin as his appetite has disappeared. Any other suggestions on how to relieve the discomfort?

Hello,
I was searching mesenteric lymphadenitis and found this board. I think it is basically the same thing as MA. Anyway, my 11-year-old son was diagnosed with this and has been having stomach pain for about a week now with it getting better and then getting worse again last night. He threw up once. He is in so much pain. Does the aloe vera juice help this? If so, how much would I give him and does he drink it plain or in something? I've never tasted it so I don't know what to expect for taste. I am hoping so much that he starts to get better now and that it doesn't last for weeks.
Thanks.
Shelli

Sorry I have not been on the site for months and just seen this question.

My DS hated the taste of Aloe Vera so could never get him to try it - now put him on a vitamin supplement more for my own peace of mind, at least I feel that I am doing everything I can to keep him in tip top condition! GP doesn't have a problem with it but say there is very little evidence to say they help.

Fegrace, did you feel the Aloe vera helped?

yesterday was the anniversary of when his last episode started and i went and booked him to have his swine flu jab (asthmatic and has food allergies too) anyway so far so good.

i hope your sons have had no more re-occurance of this nasty condition. one of my DD (8) school friends had it last summer!! so it can strike whenever it seems.

I'm so glad I found this web site. My daughter has been in extreme pain for 5 days and is beside herself. We just got her results today from her Ct scan and I have never heard of this. I feel awful for her and wish there was something I could do to make it go away. We are not sleeping and she has lost 9lbs since she can't eat. My doctor never told me it can come and go. She was hospitalized in 2007 for stomache pains but they had said it was probably just IBS. After reading on this site I think maybe she has had this all along. She has stomache pains quite often and she just got over having Mono recently. This is so overwhelming and I wish it would just go away. Where can a person buy Aloe Vera juice? I think I'm going to give it a try.

debsey · 24/01/2011 20:19

My 5 year old son just returned from hospital where he was diagnosed with Mesenteric adenitis. He's been suffering with high temps, cold and flu symptoms for 4 days and then started with tummy pain.:( The GP sent us to rule out appendicitis. Luckily it wasn't. Just needs to eat and drink more now as he had very little of either over the past 4 days (despite my best efforts to force fluid down him!) and was quite dehydrated. They kept him for a few hours to make sure he drank enough and he needed to wee but then they let us come home. :)

Milliways · 25/01/2011 18:24

When DS had this, we found Buscopan really helped with the tummy spasms (I too thought he had appendicitis).

Hope you DS gets well soon Debsy.

ellsbellz8 · 29/01/2011 11:50

Hi you can get the best quality Aloe Vera drinking gel from this site www.aloepure.myforever.biz/store my cousin is actually drinking this for mesenteric adenitis at the moment. The aloe should help with the inflammation side of things, plus its a anti-microbal and an anti-fungal so will help cleanse and detoxify the whole body, its the purest form of aloe you'll find, as good as it comes from the plant itself. Hope this helps

mmullins · 26/04/2011 04:18

My 8 year old daughter has suffered with mesenteric adenitis for 3 months, and just the other day, I found the Aloe Vera Juice at the pharmacy section at Walmart. They have the natural flavor, which is awful and needs to be mixed with juice to drink it (my daughter will not drink it even mixed with juice), but they also had berry flavored aloe juice. My daughter has been drinking about 2-4 ounces twice a day, and after about 2-3 doses she is SOO much better. Her bad cramping, gas like pain had left several weeks back, but she was still suffering with feeling sick almost every time she would eat, but since she drinks the aloe juice, she seems to be getting alot better. And of course we have prayed and prayed for her too. Mesenteric Adenitis is a terrible thing for someone to have and it takes sooo long to go away, but if you have it or someone you know has it, I strongly encourage you to drink Aloe Juice! Also, when my daughter would feel sick, we would often use Peptobismol and Kids Tums and they both seemed to help her alot.

Jackie3004 · 04/05/2011 09:45

glad I found this thread which seems to go back years! My ds (5) was up at hospital yesterday. Tummy pains under his belly button started 3 days ago just randomly, no recent bugs or V&D or fever (just a mild cold nearly 3 weeks ago). Had lunch then later started complaining of pain in middle of his tummy which came and went and got worse so he was writhing around in pain and crying. Drinking OK and passing urine, eating a little - not off food just in pain and bowel movements OK. Two visits to out of hours doc over long weekend, second one said could be appendicitis or mesenteric adonitis. Got GP referral to hospital yesterday and they did lots of prodding and poking but inconclusive. They don't think it's appendicitis but keep an eye in case it's start of it, more likely MA, but letter to GP just said "non specific abdominal pain". Treat with Calpol or nurofen (paracetamol gentler on stomach, but can use either/both alternately), also gave Rentinol for antacid which I don't think he needs. Interested in members suggestion of aloe vera juice so trying that too. I have to hide meds in his joice tho as he hates taking it and gags!

It's very frustrating they can't diagnose and even if they do the treatment is so vague and they don't have any idea how long it will last. I am off work and ds is missing school. He seems fine in himself otherwise, and is fine right now and eating breakfast and drinking one of my juice concoctions laced with aloe and calpol! But last night he woke up every hour and we are both exhausted.

Any other experiences like this? Any advice?

Jackie3004 · 04/05/2011 11:49

Ranitidine not rentinole- don't know what that is! Antacid anyway

Lesley1111 · 08/05/2011 11:46

just released from 4 day stay in hospital with my 12 yr old daughter, MA diagnosed again - this was the 3rd hospitalisation in the last year! She still has alot of pain, just managing with ibruprofen and parcetomol. So frustrating. Will def try the Aloe Vera - I really hope it works for her

throckenholt · 08/05/2011 19:07

my Ds was diagnosed with it a year or so back. Took a number of visits to the gp, followed by a brief stay in hospital and a blood test (hated having to hold him down for that :().

We have never found anything that really helps the pain - he just remains miserable and lethargic for a few days (or longer) until it clears. He seems to get it whenever he has a cold. We haven't had it much this year - but then he has had few colds - but maybe he has grown out of it.

It helps if more people know about it because then at least he gets the consideration and understanding that he needs. To be honest though to begin with I thought it was a "I don't want to go to school" tummy ache.

Lazalot · 11/05/2011 11:05

I think I have it easy after reading all these messages, my son was diagnosed with this by an out of hours doc at the hospital last weekend and then a GP on Monday, I have just bought some Aloe Vera juice to try and we carry on with Calpol and Ibuprofen, I'm so glad he can sleep but wish there was an end in sight, even after only 3 days. It is so tricky, getting his sister to school and back and I have to cancel everything I normally do as he really just wants to stay in bed.

He is 8 and normally very active, just wonder if he has had it before as he was in hospital with undiagnosable stomach pains about 18 months ago.

Feeling guilty too as sometimes we just assume 'stomach pains' are imaginary and a tactic to get out of school.

honeyl · 15/05/2011 17:03

've been really worried about my stomach problems that have been going on for about a year now.

He keeps getting really bad stomach cramps about once a week that last for a few mins then go ? today we started eating our roast then he complained and he looked like he was in real pain so I took him to the loo but he didn't need to go as he already went this morn .

He has been on Movicol for over a week now which has made him regular so it can't be constipation and he has had an episode like this about 5 times now . He eats really well and I've kept a food diary and can't pinpoint any foods that could be causing it and he runs around like any other child .

I just wanted to know if there any other mums with kids who have displayed the same symptoms. Really want to enjoy my last three weeks of preg and am not sleeping because I'm sorry worried about my poor little four year old !

Is it MA ?? as I think it's been going on for too long to be that ??

mmullins · 17/05/2011 04:16

I posted on here a few weeks ago about my daughter with MA. She was getting better with the aloe juice, and we quit the juice. She was so much better for several weeks, but now she is starting to feel her stomach problems again. She seems okay during the day and then starts feeling sick/pain in the evening. It looks like we will be going back on the Aloe Juice again! From reading other posts it looks like MA can come and go. One person said it will be longer and longer between "episodes" until it finally goes away, and that is the way it seems to be with my daughter as well. To honeyl: have you taken him to the doc? It sounds similar to what my daughter has. I used to think she was suffering from gas pains/constipation.....similar symptoms. If the doc can do a cat scan on him, they can tell you. MA is the cause of swollen lymph nodes in the stomach, that is what my daughters cat scan showed. By the way, if you want aloe juice, I had found some at walmart online when searching. But my Walmart pharmacy had the flavored kind and it tastes actually good. :o)

honeyl · 19/05/2011 09:25

mmullins- I have paeditrician app booked so I'm hoping it's nothing too serious . He seems to only get it once or every other week and I would have thought that if it was MA then he would't have had it for nearly a year as that means he has had a viral infection for year !

mmullins · 26/05/2011 05:03

So just for other people I am posting this, when my daughter quits drinking the aloe vera juice she starts having bowel/gas problems again from the MA, only its not severe. But as soon as I start her back on the juice her symptoms seem to go away again. I am just hoping that her symptoms will completely clear up soon, even without the juice. But I sure am thankful to know that aloe juice can help with digestive/bowel problems.

rockinhippy · 26/05/2011 09:45

I didn't know it had a name, but from reading this I realise my DD has this problem too -

I've been told by GP in the past that her tummy lymph glands are up & sore & that is the cause of some of her tummy pain (she also has IBS) which she also gets with any infection/virus & has been seen as a suspected Appendicitis before now too - as already said I've found pain killers help her, along with a wheat bag or hot water bottle

Tonksthecat · 16/01/2012 00:20

Hello - another worried mum digging up an old thread late at night - after an exhausting series of interrupted nights and waits at out of hours doctors.

I guess at least it's not appendicitis or dismissed as just emotional tummy ache.

How are your children doing now? Any advance on the home remedies for MA? Off in search of aloe and a wheat bag tomorrow (websites sugest warm moist heat) tummy-rubbing seems to help my 6 year old DS but we're quite new to all this.

AMHOGAN · 01/02/2012 23:47

I thought I was losing my mind, my husband thought our son was faking and won't believe he was really in pain because he kept eating. It is really worries me that he is in so much pain. We have another Dr appointment in morning maybe we can get something else to help relieve the pain. All he wants to do is lay in bed with a heating pad. I don't know what I am going to do if he doesn't get functional soon. He needs to go to school and I need to go to work.

mumseymum · 03/04/2012 18:19
