I got news this morning that one of my friends died yesterday. She was in her very early 30's, two young children and everything to live for. Despite a mastectomy a couple of years ago, the cancer spread and she is gone. I can't tell you how dreadful I feel.

It is so important that we check our breasts regularly. It takes a few minutes and could save your life.
One of my best friends had a message just like this one, but it was face to face and by her boyfriends exgf who also had just had a mastectomy because of breast cancer. This message from such an unlikely messenger almost certainly saved my best friends life.

Pass the message on please ladies. Make sure your friends and family are nudged into remembering to check.

Good luck today Ifancy!

Thank you ladies.... So, I am back. Hmm - inconclusive at this stage.

I seems I have two areas of concern (which is what I thought). I was examined by the Nurse Practitioner and she quickly fond the areas I was worried about. Then the mammogram showed a lump. Saw a Consultant Radiologist who could only find one area, which he thinks is a fatty mass - he did give it a name but (as everyone predicted!) I have forgotten it but it was along the lines of Fibroidsomething. He did two core biopsies on it.

Went back to see the Nurse Practitioner who wasn't happy that the consultant hadn't biopsied the 2nd area, which is much more 'lump' like and irregular (bad) but it seems to be unattached and mallable (good!).

So she did a second lot of core biopsies. They've told me my breast will be very bruised as they've done 4 biopsies but that's ok. They were fan-bloody-tastic and there was quite a lot of laughter etc!

So I get the results on Wednesday but, strangely, I feel so much more reassured now that I've started on the process. The staff at the clinic were so ...normal and friendly that it made it much less scary.

I am now more convinced that it is benign - they said they were 'concerned' not 'worried' and I appreciate I may be reading too much into that and setting myself up for a fall but I just get the feeling it's going to be better news than I first expected.

Going to have a large glass of wine tonight!

Thank you again ladies for getting me through last week and I hope you don't mind if I rely on you a fair bit over the next couple of days...

MaryAnnSingleton · 21/05/2010 13:37

ifancy - well done for getting through that - you will be a bit bruised and sore, but it should heal up quickly.
Fibroadenoma is the word !
I think that once you've got through the initial tests there is a sense of relief - I felt that - it's because you're on the way really and you have some more knowledge of what's going on which is a much better thing than not knowing, iyswim.Am glad they were so nice too.
Have a big glass of wine and try to relax and do come back anytime you like xxx

Amapoleon · 21/05/2010 16:36

Well done! Sounds like a bit of an ordeal! Keeping everything crossed for you!

ifancyashandy · 21/05/2010 17:14

Thank you and hope you're feeling a little better today too.

ifancyashandy · 23/05/2010 14:38

Oh dear - feeling very down today. Was supposed to be going for a picnic with a friend and her family (I saw and told her about waiting for my results on Friday evening) but another friend asked to come along and I just couldn't face it. I don't want lots of people to know yet (in case they don't - fingers crossed - need to) but I couldn't face being all perky and 'normal' today.

Am also pre-menstral. But now feel really guilty that I'm not out being happy and 'living each day', IYKWIM. But just feel very weepy and blue.

Ho Hum.

MaryAnnSingleton · 23/05/2010 17:44

ifancy - your reactions are totally normal - don't feel bad.
I remember spending the day with a close friend about while i was waiting for the results of my surgery and feeling very out of sorts -I was virtually monosyllabic - it's a hard time for you,so be kind to yourself.

Amapoleon · 23/05/2010 18:30

Ifancy I know where you are coming from. I feel very low this week and don't really feel like putting a happy face on. Pmt doesn't help either ,hahaha!

Amapoleon · 23/05/2010 18:35

Sorry, I meant to say keep your chin up and hope you are feeling better soon xxx

ifancyashandy · 23/05/2010 19:41

'Virtually monsyllabic' is exactly how I feel. And sooo tired. I could sleep for England. I'm getting to sleep ok but waking up around 5am. Can get back to sleep again an hour or so later but then it's soon time to get up. Napped twice yesterday and again this afternoon... maybe stress induced.

Sorry you're feeling low today too Amapoleon. The sunshine and 'everybody party' atmosphere makes me want to curl up too. I hope you feel better soon too.

Thank you both for your support and taking the time to reply

ifancyashandy · 23/05/2010 19:42

Sorry - meant to add - what day do you get your results this week Amapoleon?

Amapoleon · 23/05/2010 19:45

I'm tired too, i'm usually a night owl but i'm dreaming of bed almost as soon as I get up.

I have to phone the breast nurse tomorrow and there is a breast clinic on Wednesday. I'm not fixing a day this week as I was so disappointed last week.

Amapoleon · 23/05/2010 19:46

Ooh, close posts, I'm not stalking you

ifancyashandy · 23/05/2010 19:49

Haha! Wednesday for my appointment too. We can hold virtual hands x

Amapoleon · 23/05/2010 19:51

MaryAnnSingleton · 23/05/2010 21:32

Amapoleon · 24/05/2010 14:25

GREAT NEWS!! I have just had the surgeon on the phone and it is benign. It was surrounded by a chronic infection. He told me that there is a mastitis that looks like cancer and a cancer that looks like mastitis and luckily for me , it was the first!
