Does anyone have any cures that WORK for Mouth Ulcers - Really getting me down...

Just looking for some advice on here, even though this is going to seem quite trivial compared to some of the really sad thread titles that I've seen...

I suffer a lot with mouth ulcers, aswell as throat ulcers, but this one has lasted a good week and I haven't actually bought any medication for it yet as I've never found anything that really works. The Bonjela type things don't actually stay on the ulcer, I find, and just wash around your mouth. The ones that I've got are on the side of my tongue so eating, drinking and talking is incredibly painful!!

I know that a rinse with salt-water helps in the long-term, but anyone know of anything that I can use to reduce the pain, just so that I can have a decent meal??!!

Thanks in advance!!

Oraldene mouthwash. In the chemists, probably in supermarket pharmacies too.

You really need to find out why you are getting so many though and attack the cause not the effect. Are you run down? Lacking in something? Have you seen a GP?

LouIsAWeetbixKid · 22/10/2009 12:05

Vegemite applied directly to the ulcer. Stings like hell but the high vitamin b and salt levels help. Oraldene works too

DawnAS · 22/10/2009 12:14

Ooooh thanks ladies!!

I am run down I think, yes. Although I do tend to get them quite a lot anyway...

Had a baby 19 weeks ago and started back to work full-time this week, so quite a bit of stress. Also worry over baby not drinking enough so I think it's all mounted up!!

Also think I might be anaemic (was after having DD and my lips are still blue... ) although I don't know that anaemia is related to ulcers!!

Thanks so much though. Does Marmite work aswell as Vegemite or does it have to be that?

xx

Not sure about marmite. Is it as salty as vegemite? It always looked and smelt revolting so never tried it.

keep your mouth closed. sorry not trying to be rude but i used to suffer with the most horedous ulcers years ago. i tried loads of things on it but found by accident that if i just kept my mouth closed all day they healed quite quickly. i think this has something to do with keeping the air of it.

beautifulgirls · 24/10/2009 20:52

Oraldene mouthwash and Anbesol liquid.

BecauseImWorthIt · 24/10/2009 20:56

Vitamin C with zinc will help you build up your immunity.

When suffering, get some soluble aspirin, dissolve one and sloosh that around your mouth till it numbs the pain.

yama · 24/10/2009 21:02

Dawn - do you chew Xtra chewing gum? Dh says that gives him ulcers.

Also, there's a property in toothpaste that can cause them - something to do with membranes. So, try not to have toothpaste in your mouth for too long.

My dentist gets them all the time.

nightofthewakingdead · 24/10/2009 21:04

Be careful about what you are eating.

If I eat too much chocolate I get mouth ulcers and cold sores (and I read somewhere that it is common).

google it?

Hassled · 24/10/2009 21:05

Gargling with salty water. Disgusting, but it works.

lulalullabye · 24/10/2009 21:16

There is something called L-Lysine that you get from healthfood shops. I had ulcers/cracks at the side of my mouth for months and advised to take this and they were gone forever within 2 days. Go and ask at the healthfood shop

nightofthewakingdead · 24/10/2009 21:19

Yes, that's what missing from your diet I think?

Eaglebird · 24/10/2009 21:40

Think I'll give the L-Lysine a whirl. I've been plagued with mouth ulcers on and off for the past month or so.
Thanks for the tip.

BrokenBananaTantrum · 24/10/2009 21:43

Adcortil in orabase available from the chemist is the most amazing thing I have found for my ulcers. Its a really sticky paste ointment so you should put it on at night before you go to sleep. Sometimes my ulcers disappear overnight. Honestly

Katymac · 24/10/2009 21:46

Adcortyl is great

Another vote for Adcortyl in Orabase or Corlan pellets - both work a treat.

Mouth ulcers are sometimes an indication that other things can be wrong with the gastrointestinal tract so it you are not right in other ways it is worthwhile getting further advice about it.

ThisBoyDraculaDrew · 24/10/2009 22:01

The thing to be careful of is that some mouth ulcers are actually cold-sores inside the mouth. Not an awful lot you can do once you have one - except mentioned here anbesol for pain-killling, medicated mouthwash to stop it become infected and prelonged.

Without being silly - you need to be a little careful around your 19wk old. If it is the coldsore virus doing the rounds inside your mouth it is potentially contagious and the cold-sore virus is really really really nasty in under 1's. It is much less contagious than on your lips. But try and avoid things like blowing raspberries at your baby, testing the temp of their food when you have an ulcer (when you get to weaning) etc.

TrillianSlasher · 24/10/2009 22:10

Frador. Hurts like buggery, forms a kind of seal over the ulcer. You can get it in Boots I think, the link is just to show you what it looks like.

robino · 24/10/2009 22:10

ooh, hello pacific! I'm not intending to worry you but she's right about the gastrointestinal tract. I had a dreadful tongue last week and had my appendix out yesterday. Interesting to find out that the two were linked in my case. Please don't panic but i would say definitely a good idea to be aware.

I hate to state the bleedin' obvious (actually I don;t but thats another story) but go to your GP. If its a continuous problme they can check out a few things and prescribe some killer cream which worked a treat on mine (it seal over the ulcer).
