Circumcision -- doctor recommendation in London area

Dorrit · 07/06/2005 22:08

Can anyone recommend a doctor who performs circumcision in the London area? I don't want to debate or defend this choice. I'm just looking for a doctor/surgeon who can perform the procedure. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

As far as I know, there are no Doctors that will perform the operation in this country. You will have to find a liberal synagogue or mosque and get them to perform it for you (I had a friend who did this).

Dorrit · 07/06/2005 22:10

I think it isn't offered on the NHS, but some will perform this procedure privately.

dh may know, he is medical negligence lawyer who has dealt with many that have gone wrong so presumably he knows who the good ones are, i will ask him and post back later.

CountessDracula · 07/06/2005 22:15

sorry just realised that may have sounded awful, he has dealt with a small number of cases and I don't think there is any greater risk of injury that any other operation.

swivellyscooter · 07/06/2005 22:16

As far as I am aware this procedure would only be carried out on the NHS if their was a medical necessity. Don't know about privately.

Dorrit - use the search facility and check the archives- there has been a thread in the last year asking the same q which gave the answers you seek.

Dorrit · 07/06/2005 22:34

sorry, couldn't find a useful thread. saw one on circumcison, but it actually went on and on about lots of things like breast feeding so wasn't very helpful. Although it was really long and I didn't read all of it. Please if anyone has any experience I would appreciate some names and contacts. Thank you.

We had both our ds's and three of their cousins too were circumcised by a doctor in West London. I can CAT you his number.

Davros · 08/06/2005 10:48

Ours was done privately by a Dr at the Clementine Churchill Hospital, I can't remember his name as it was 10 years ago but you could ring there. OR ring the Wellington in St Johns WOod as I think it is done there too.
Morningpaper, why do you think that no Drs do it in this country? Not true!!

vivs · 08/06/2005 19:15

do you want some one to do it in asurgical way, Dorrit,ie under general anaesthetic or in a religious way?

bubble99 · 08/06/2005 22:06

Hi Dorrit. If you CAT me I can give you the number of a doctor in SW London. He works for the NHS but performs private circumcisions under local anaesthetic.

Pomi · 10/06/2005 14:43

There is one doctor in croydon mosque please NEVER go there.

Dorrit · 11/07/2005 15:35

Did those of you who had your sons done as young babies find there was discomfort/pain to follow? And what about a bit of swelling? I know that some is normal, but not sure at what point to worry.

Thanks everyone!

It was done today, but thanks for the continued offers of places to go. I have spoken to the doctor, who said it sounds normal and not to worry so long as it's not bleeding (which it isn't... well not abnormally). Said the swelling was from the anaesthetic and that it should go down in the next day or two.

As for the pain, I'm really not sure if it's down to the circumcision or gripe/wind/colic. He's been fussy for a few days now and burping and farting like a right proper bloke. So that could explain the fussiness. He;s sleeping now though (ah bless...)

I just wondered other people's experiences.

Davros, what do you mean by not normal? And how long is a short while?

Hi Dorrit,

Had my son circumcised last month (at 15mths).
He was in pain for about 3 days, but mainly during nappy change.
treatment was simple. clean wound after each nappy change with prescribed antisepic + antibiotic ointment + paracetamol 3 times a day for pain. No water/bath/shower for 5 days.
However, I recommend removing nappy completely veryeffeive as it helps wound dry up much more quickly.
The doctor did not recommend it but my mother and sister who have been there before made me do it. So aftr 48 hours we removed nappy and let him run around in a Tshirt most of the day. nappy only for sleep as he might hurt himself by rubbing against mattress.
It's hard work for you as you have to clean up mess, but honest within 2/3 days, was completely healed.
The penis is swollen for the first 5 days. Don't freak out. Afer, it gets better and back to normal at the end on the week.
Give him a lot of attention and play lot to distract him.
I don't know how old is our son, but they say the younger the easier.
Hugs and kisses to both of you and if you need mor info, let me know.

Pomi · 12/07/2005 15:14

slim22 we were advised to give our son bath twice after 24 hours but without soup though. I dont know what is right. ds1 had it when he was two month and ds2 theree months. why did you delay for your son?

slim22 · 12/07/2005 16:32

hi,
I wanted to do it at birth but had group B strep and was advised to wait a few weeks. Then, had brother in hospital with head injuries after very serious car crash and could not bear the thought of being in a hospital anymore.
Thing is, I did not want to have baby circumsised by urologist as not a very common operaion in UK.
Everyone recomended surgeon/rabbi but baby was then already 6 months and they said had to be done in hospital.
Eventually, had it done in Morrocco during holiay(where my family is). Felt more secure as all baby boys get circumsised , it is a very common procedure there and surgeons performs about 10/15 a day so they should know what they are doing.
It was over in 10mn and were back home within a couple of hours, whith doctor on call anytime of day and night.
And big plus, mum and my sister with me all week
There you go, the story of my life, sorry for being so long.
As for bathing, no answer. suppose, to allow wound to dry quickly? I suppose a shower won't harm, if he is in no pain. just make sure thouroughly dry before putting the nappy on.

Pomi · 12/07/2005 20:44

Thanks for replying slim but your life story is not long.

Pomi · 12/07/2005 20:49

I do not know much about circumcision except we have to do it being muslim. Can anyone tell me what is the differece of having it done by religous and surgical way. Is their a way of doing it without anaesthetic?

starlover · 12/07/2005 20:58

why would you want it done iwthout an anaesthetic???
