Circumcision -- doctor recommendation in London area

Can anyone recommend a doctor who performs circumcision in the London area? I don't want to debate or defend this choice. I'm just looking for a doctor/surgeon who can perform the procedure. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

Right on! would never dream of inflicting this on anyone without anesthetic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To answer the question about "religious way":

My understanding is that the Jewish faith requires that baby boys be circumcised on seventh day after birth. Having talked to a rabbi, I know that the operation is performed without general anesthetic. on the day of the procedure, you apply a local anesthetic cream (about 3 hours before) then the baby is given a few drops of ceremonial kosher wine on the tongue and then the foreskin is cut. As far as I understand from my friends have told me, ther does not seem to be any suffering involved!!!)
Many rabbis are happy to perform the operation on non jewish babies (our case, we are muslim)but they will only perform on babies under 3 months as on older babies, general anesthetic has to be given.

Muslims do not have a specific timeframe to carry out this religious prescription, but nowadays, many (the sensible ones) try to do it as early as possible because the younger babies are the quicker they heal.
By sensible I suppose I actually mean secular. In our case, it was a question of keeping the tradition going, of my litle boy not wondering why he is different from daddy.
In other families, I know that circumcision is a big thing, a rite of passage in a way. In my opinion, shame a religious prescription should have to involve suffering. But that is a debate far wider than the original question of this post.

Hope this answers the question.

Take care everyone

Thanks for the replies. He was swollen yesterday and was a bit worried. Though the doctor said it was normal. Then I noticed some blood/bruising at the base of the penis and that worried me. But, I called the doc again and again he said that was okay. It's just very worrying I guess. But it looks better today. And he seems his usual happy self. So I don't think he's in any pain.

He is 8 weeks old.

Ohh thing is the doc advised to bath him every day in water with salt and dettol. Seems everyone gives different bathing advice. I haven't done this. I have instead put antibiotic ointment on the tip because I think it looks quite raw (again this is apparently perfectly normal). And also will help prevent infection. I will probably bath him tomorrow. I may use the salt, but I don't think I'll use dettol.

Thank slim you have made it so clear to me. As i said before i dont know much about it but i read the message of Vivs and became curious.

starlover · 13/07/2005 14:25

dorrit... if the tip looks raw then please don't put antiseptic ointment on.. it'll make it really sore. most say not to use on areas of broken skin.

salt water baths should be fab though, as salt is a natural antiseptic

hello again Dorrit,
Quite agree with starlover. stop anitbiotic ointment and as doctor for oral antibiotic if you must use any.
My baby's wound was weeping when used ointment 'cause keeps it moist and delays healing. On third day, i just removed nappy for long periods of day and let it dry.
Suppose bath with salt sounds like a good idea but salt might sting, poor thing.
To be honest, I would hold bathing for a few days as lying in soiled water does not seem like a good idea with weeping wound. Maybe that's why doctor suggested dettol.
Why don't you just sponge bath for a couple more days and maybe just wash nappy area with a little running water?
take care.

Pomi · 14/07/2005 14:46

I too agree that you should not use ointment on it but bathing in salt water is good. Salt does not sting if mixed with water. I too have used it for my stitches. Dont put dettol. You must give him bath to make the area clean.

Boy life is busy. I've just now had a chance to look at this again. I have been using the ointment. It looks better, but now I think it is time to get it to dry out and get the plastic ring to fall off, so I'm going to switch to the salt water now. Thanks so much for everyone's advice. It has been ever so helpful.

If Pomi's still out there i'd be interested to know why you think you have to circumcise as a Muslim - it's not mentioned in the Quran. Female circumcision has been dropped by most Muslims for this reason - though male (like female)cutting is mentioned in Prophet Mohammed's conversations I would have thought there was enough evidence now that this is a cultural and practice that arose just because of harsh desert environment. Haven't Muslims moved away from some other Hadith which are rooted in a time and place and not in the will of Allah?

There's two major private clinics:
www.circumcisioncentre.co.uk
www.circumcisions.co.uk

A list of some others here too:

There's no difference between islamic circumcision, islam certainly didn't say I can't have my boy circumcised without anaesthetic! did it at www.circumcision-london.co.uk and they use anaesthetic. Definitely avoid the soap, they also recommended bathing him in salt+water which I think was actually quite relaxing for him.
