Adult acne - anyone been successfully treated?

Drives me up the flippin' wall... I"m 36 fgs, I've got wrinkles and acne at the same time, it just ain't fair!

I've had it since I was 26 (didn't get acne at all as a teen, it waited for me to graduate uni before setting in...). I have been on long-term antibiotics (which worked while I was on them, but acne came back), Dianette (brilliant, but dr says I can't take it any more due to other health risks), and currently use Duac gel.

I feel unreasonably miserable about it particularly as I'm getting older my skin scars more easily so every time I feel the 'bruise' feeling under my skin I know that I'm likely to have another scar soon...

Whatever anyone has done that worked, whether diet/lifestyle or medical I'd be very happy to hear about it.

When I had roaccutane I didn't have to follow any rules about contraception - just to tell the doctor I wasn't planning to have children, and understood that I couldn't until 4 weeks after the end of the course - and I didn't have any personality tests either. Just cholesterol tests.

Alypaly - thanks I'll bear that one in mind. We've got a bathroom shelf of the usual completely useless teen products so it's good to know of something which may be effective.

catwalker it has an antibiotic( erythromycin) in the lotion and it is put directly on to the spot. It has got rid of all his pustules really quickly

catwalker · 11/09/2009 11:30

And I can buy it over the counter or do I need a prescription?

alypaly · 11/09/2009 13:09

catwalker...you need a prescription as it is an anti-biotic lotion. if u havent tried it b4, its worth a go....use it religiously every night and afetr about 10 days you should see some improvement

alypaly · 11/09/2009 13:12

did you say it was scarring you every time you get a spot or is it just the larger ones. Do they form pustules or are they blackheads or just red...sorry to be nosey. I used to sell acne products for a company called stiefel that made panoxyl...so i had to learn alot about thye subject on my training courses.

Well, I don't get them any more - touch wood - but yes, they were the proper acne pustules (can hardly bring myself to type that word ...)on my face, neck, back and chest. I took antibiotics from the age of 17, tried to live with it for a spell in my early twenties, tried homeopathic remedies for a while (wasting huge amounts of money on useless treatments), back on antibiotic tables and lotions, then roacutane in my late twenties/early 30s. I did have 3 courses of roacutane over probably a 5 year period, so I guess it wasn't that wonderful as the acne did come back. But it certainly felt wonderful at the time! But since my first pregnancy at the age of 34 I've not had much to complain about.

Just because I know my acne could be hereditary I'm trying to get clued up for my kids. My eldest's just looks like teenage pimples at the moment, though he has had the occasional angry pustule. When/if he does need to get something on prescription, I'll make sure we ask for Zineryt. Thanks for your help.

Just wanted to say that the gold standard of treatments, if you are worried about the roaccutane route, is meant to be a combination of n-lite and micro-dermabrasion.
Let us know how you get on!

Nice to see i'm not the only "adult" with teenage skin Grin I have had worsening spots since i had my first child, each pregnancy has brought more spots. Concentrated mostly on my chin and have been told that it is most likely hormone related, which makes sense as i was diagnosed with pcos as a teen. I trued zineryt (sp?) a few years ago and didn't like it, so no difference. Tried dianette but i was certain that was making my spots worse this was after 2nd lo, so came off it and fell with baby no 3. My skin has gradually been worsening since then. Big imflamed spots and whiteheads and gradually getting more open pores and blackheads. After a big painful breakout i went to the chemist and was advised to try teatree and whitchazel cleanser and toners ( which i had tried) i also stopped scrubbing my face as often. about twice a week now as oppose to twice a day! Blush. I also picked up some freederm that said to reduce inflamed spots, which is what i needed at the point! I used it for about 5 weeks and can honestly say that although it doesnt anywhere near "cure" acne it deffo helps. Spots werent so sore or getting so inflamed and i found quite bizarrely that it really helped with my blackheads and open pores (it doesnt make any claims to do so) i was happy on the freederm but found it was doing nothing for the sore spots that just lurk under the skin. Went to docs and got duac. that was last week, so far im not convinced as i have quite a few new spots emerging and they are inflamed. But obviously it is still early days. I have been wondering if i could use the freederm in the morning since the duac is applied at night? thoughts?
thanks!

I don't know if this thread is still going but man alive I love you people. I am 35 and have had hideous acne and rosacea for 20 years at least now. I' sure I have never actually seen anyone with skin as gross as mine but clearly they exist as you are all here! Hi!
I have PCOS so it's blatantly down to that but it completely sucks. I hate seeing people and going out and my husband just doesnt get it. He says its not that bad but it really is.
I had roaccutane at around 19 and I dont remember it helping at all. I had much drier redder skin but still lots of spots. And the beastly boil like ones.
How many times have I attacked my face with a pin to try and drain these buggers? A gazillion I should think and I've got the scars to prove it.
I don't think I'll ever be rid of this grim skin. I remember vividly as a teen wondering if you still had spots once you were dead - I never contemplated suicide seriously but I was a thought I had.

I'm rambling, sorry, it was just nice to offload x
