We should be doing this anyway but the news of Kylie made me think again about breast cancer. So please, all go and check your boobs and then post here to say you've done it and keep the thread going so we all see it and all do it.
I don't want anything happening to one of you and if it does catch it early.

I have a bit of a personal q if any one knows if this is something to check out please let me know.
I breastfed my daughter for 7 months.
This was 4 years ago.
I stll have some leakage of breast milk or what I think is that.
Is that normal or can this leakage be a sign of something to worry about?

I would appriciate your advice girls!

I'm a massive Kylie fan & i went to see the Showgirl tour 3 times at Earls Court a couple of weeks ago(1st, 2nd & 5th may)Kylie looked fab & i was totally gutted when i saw the news yesterday morning.I checked myself straight away & as my big sis had breast cancer at 30 i know i'm at risk & i'm now 29 . Breast cancer isnt a older persons disease it can happen to anyone any age its a shame screening isnt offered to all ages but apparently mammograms are not as affective on younger women as the tissue is denser & so the reading is not as good.Great advice keep checking .

SleepyJess · 18/05/2005 21:58

Wendy do you have to squeeze to get it, and is it just a little bead of breast milk type stuff? If so I think I am right in saying this is not abnormal. If it leaks you could have Galactorhoea.. a tpye of hormone imbalance which often causes headaches too. A blood test can confirm this.

After a scare when I was 15/16 I still don't check them as often as I should. Thanks for the reminder Thomcat, I was lucky once. Keep checking ladies

wendy33 · 18/05/2005 22:05

If I 'squeeze' then a greasy residue comes out. I often get a crust on the centre of my nipple, where the milk would normally come out. !
Lol
Sorry but I have to laugh!

Do you think I should mention it to my doctor?

I just had a breast lump removed a few weeks ago which luckily turned out not to be anything serious. I would just like to say don't just feel for lumps, use your eyes as well. Look in the mirror for any changes to the outline of your breast or any changes in skin texture. My lump caused a small dimple in the skin which I was fortunate to notice by accident, but could not be felt by hand.

Louise1980 · 19/05/2005 08:04

First bump of the morning.

Just thought Id add, I actually have a lump which I cant feel as Ive had breast surgery. So those of us who've had surgery for whatever reason be extra carerul and if you arn't happy ask GP to check next time you are there.

vivat · 19/05/2005 13:08

good thread Thomcat - I did this last week forthe first time since stopping breast feeding last December, and found quite a big lump and now have an appt for some tests this evening. Am bricking myself (excuse rather coarse language) so it's quite helpful to see there's lots of people in the same position - iykwim

Found this advice for breastfeeders among us:

"Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and women who have silicone implants, should continue to examine their breasts once a month. Breastfeeding mothers should conduct the breast self-examination after all milk has been expressed." (or drunk presumably!)

Wendy33 - I would mention it to your doc, you have nothing to lose and better safe than sorry etc.

Bump

ghosty · 19/05/2005 22:06

Checked mine ... but DH does it on a regular basis for me anyway

Good thread TC ...

SofiaAmes · 20/05/2005 01:00

I've already had two annual mammograms (in the usa they start them at 35-40).

sestius · 20/05/2005 08:23

Checked - thanks TC. I notice that Kylie is already "using" her situation to raise money for cancer charities by asking fans to donate money rather than send her flowers, gifts etc. Nice lady.

Evesmama · 20/05/2005 08:49

checked (i think?)

bump

Oil · 20/05/2005 09:04

Done.

Evesmama · 20/05/2005 09:29

i have also just made my overdue smear appointment and i should know better as i have had to have treatment for pre cancerous cells

charleepeters · 20/05/2005 09:30

done it today! and i was very good and got a lump i was worried about checked out which i would usually put off and see if it would go away by itself. (it was fine)

Louise1980 · 20/05/2005 15:02

Good news Charleepeters. Im actually watching Kylie on sky now and its quite upseting. Ive grown up with her as a idol and it just ssems unfair.

BananaSkin · 28/01/2009 22:51

Searching for something else, but thought I'd give this a bump
