Would you be concerned with frequent sickness in a c7 yo hild?

My DS seems to get ill quite frequently. He is 7 and eats well and is very fit and active.
But every couple of weeks, he gets a sickness bug and it totally wipes him out.

He often complains of feeling sick, but when he is acting his usual self, its hard to believe him. He is definitely sick today, I have the contents of the bucket to prove it!

Would you be concerned, or is it completely normal? Its not all year, every year, but it feels that way just recently.

Kid, am sorry and dont want to worry you, but i think you should take action ASAP, maybe even taking him to A&E.

I think he would benefit from an endoscopy and i really dont think you should leave it any longer.

Do you have a way of getting him seen to privately?

kid · 28/06/2009 13:36

He wasn't ill after all, he was a cheeky monkey instead.

While I thought he hadn't had any breakfast he had actually got up earlier and stuffed his face. Rather than admit that to me and risk getting in trouble, he pretended he wasn't hungry!

There is a nasty bug doing the rounds at school, the Dr thinks he had a combination of migraine and the bug. Its really effected lots of children, I think there was nearly 30 kids off with it on Friday which is a lot for a one form entry school.

I'm still keeping an eye on him and there has been no sickness or headaches since last weekend.

little monkey! especially when you are having worries about him as it is!

Glad it wasn't anything this time, kid.

kid · 29/06/2009 19:52

Just had confirmed cases of swine flu at his school. Really hope he doesn't catch it, he hasn't fattened up yet so can't really afford to get ill again!

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 29/06/2009 23:02

Have you pulled him out immediately? Have they closed the school immediately?
This swine flu is actually getting to be somewhat problematic - I hope your DS manages to avoid it.

kid · 29/06/2009 23:07

The school is to remain open as they have been advised by the health protection agency that the trasmission of the virus has already happened so there will be no benefit in closing the school. It would seem they are issuing the same standard letter to most local schools.

As he isn't showing any signs of swine flu, I have been advised to just carry on as normal. The Dr will deal with it should he catch it apparently. At the moment, no-one in his class has it, but one of his friends have a sibling in the affected class. I haven't checked his weight yet to see if he has actually gained anything. He still looks a bit pasty.

I'm not overly worried at the moment as he seems well.

Just got a message from the Drs. Not sure what the message was about but I know they want me to phone them back, something about they might need to do another urine sample as they didn't know what the test was for? Not sure but I think thats what they said.

Only took them a week to get that far, idiots!

OP posts:
kid · 01/07/2009 20:04

Spoke to the Drs, they didn't know what the urine was being tested for so they distroyed it. They wanted me to take in another sample today before 11, that was at 10:45 so that didn't happen.

I won't be able to take it in tomorrow before 11 either so they might get it on Friday. I am so annoyed that it took them a week to work that out and to let me know. I don't understand why they couldn't have asked the Dr what it was for seeing as she was the one that requested it.

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 01/07/2009 22:34

Oh dear kid - that is a bit incompetent of them. Sometimes certain tests only have a limited space of time in which they can be done and if the doc has failed to fill in a request form properly (i.e. not indicated which test is required) and the GP surgery isn't contactable within the timeframe, then there isn't anything else the lab can do.

Tis annoying though!

And it would have taken a while for the non-request to have been processed; usual turnaround is 3 days though so don't know why it took them a week to get back to you. Probably overwhelmed with other stuff.

kid · 01/07/2009 22:49

I suppose I can let them off as I don't believe he even has a urine infection, but of course I am happy for them to test for it even just to rule it out.

He has gained more than 3lb this week, which is a great start.
I am now convinced he had swine flu last week. He did have the symptoms, but I never thought it at the time as I didn't realise it was going around the school. Now it is clearly going around the school and knocking several children off their feet.

He has been so good lately, well the last 2 days at least. I just hope his good moods last!

havnt read all of this but wanted to say get his thyroid function checked.

my mates little lad was exactly the same - but he turned out to have an overactive thyroid. easy blood test to check

he ate like a horse but never put on weight. and the sickness was a real pain for her - the test confirmed overactive thyroid and its easily treated. he is so much better now.,

thumbwitch · 01/07/2009 23:19

kid, there are other things in the urine that can be measured as well as looking for bugs, like sugar and protein for e.g. So it might not have been for an infection check.

kid · 02/07/2009 20:54

Opps, forgot to go Drs to get the sample pot. I must go tomorrow morning before school. I wonder if he will be able to produce a sample there and then?

He is ill again
We went for his check up on Thursday and he had been fine the entire month. The Dr checked his weight, he hadn't gained anything in that time but she didn't want to investigate it because he looks healthy.

She wants to see him in a month again to monitor him, she said to phone her before if we have any problems.
So, I will be phoning in the morning and hopefully she can see him shortly.

I have just been looking back over a website that I use. On it, I had posted messages each time he has been ill, it looks bad.

These are the dates that he was sick, its definitely not normal and I will be passing these dates on to the Dr.

9.2.09
2.3.09
6.4.09 (He had a month break here!)
13.6.09
22.6.09
27.7.09

So it looks like he is ill once a month. Before Feb, he wasn't ill for ages, its defintely a new pattern that has started.
Poor little lamb, he was laying on the toilet floor tonight crying because he felt sick. After he was sick, he fell asleep so we put him into bed after an hour as we knew he was asleep for the night.

this is EXACTLY what my friends little boy was like before he was diagnosed with an over active thyroid.

please get it checked - its so easy with a simple blood test. he is now absolutely thriving.

kid · 28/07/2009 08:29

He is fine again this morning, what a strange child!
I am going to phone the Drs when they open anyway, hoping to speak to the same Dr that has been seeing him.

pcikyvic, was your friends little boy sleeping straight after vomitting? Or I wonder if that it just a normal reaction to vomitting, totally exhausting?

kid · 28/07/2009 08:49

Finally got through to the Drs, she is going to phone me back between now and 1pm.

I hope she doesn't call when I am on the train. She knows what the problem is though as I explained it to the receptionist.

He got referred, will be seen beginning of Sept.

I had these symptons for a year when I was a kid it was a rumbling appendix....everyday feeling sick, bein sick, being sent home from school.

One day I have the severest pain in my side that moved around then the appendix burst.

Has the dr ruled this out?

roneef · 29/07/2009 22:07

Hi kid. My dc had sickness, lethargy for 6 mths.

doctor said he had an abdominal migraine. THe meds for that didn't work. Then they said he had excess acid, prescribing ranitidine(antacid) it didn't work.

They finally did full blood tests(not pleasant)He had a bacteria in his stomach H PYLORI.

He was just like your dc. Sickness off and on. When he was well it was fab but when it struck it sort of wiped him out.

He is 100% better now (touch wood). They gave him antibiotics and strong antacid for a week.

pickyvic · 29/07/2009 22:57

seems theres a lot of differing advice on here but id say a blood test is called for! good luck x

kid · 31/08/2009 19:13

tomorrow is his hospital appointment. Will have to see what tests they do and how long we have to wait for results.

OP posts:
eekamoose · 31/08/2009 19:24

Hi kid, good luck for tomorrow's appointment.

I wanted to tell you about my dd's friend, 8 years old, who has been, ever since we've known her, rather sensitive in the tummy. She often complains of tummy ache and is sick without warning at school etc.

Anyhoo, about a month ago she had a night of vomiting combined with horrendous stomach pain, and her parents took her to A&E. She was admitted for tests. Had her appendix removed - no relief. So after two weeks and every scan known to man she had major exploratory surgery which showed terrible ULCER on duodenum. Consultants at hospital (major London teaching hospital) had never seen similar in a small child.

She is doing well now and expected to make a full recovery.

I am not for one minute suggesting that your ds has anything as serious as this (it appears to be highly unusual) but offer it as an illustration of how children can have an underlying medical condition when you are not quite sure and how, of course, it is best to err on the side of caution rather than just dismiss it as some sort of "phase that will pass".

How has ds been since you originally posted back in June?

kid · 31/08/2009 19:31

He was ill again at the end of july, complained of feeling sick on the 13th aug (just hours before we were due to fly to Turkey!) but I gave him some calpol and sent him to bed and he was fine.

He also complained of feeling sick on the 23rd Aug but again was not sick. Instead, he went to bed, fell asleep and was fine in the morning.

I am going to take a note of the dates for the hospital, I don't believe it will help them in anyway, but it will show that there must be an underlying cause to his frequent sickness.
