percy · 27/04/2003 13:02

oooooh i hate them too and have just got them back again with birth of second child due yesterday. any good tips? - anusol cream does bugger all in my humble opinion. actually they are so sore at the mo that are keeping me up at night! aaaargh.

Ghosty · 27/04/2003 21:25

Edgarcat ... yup ... it is Rolling on the Floor Laughing. I know piles aren't funny but it was the way I opened the thread thinking I would see a whole long screed about some poor mumsnetter's nightmare with those dreaded piles and only saw 3 words ...... that said it all ... That is why I was laughing ...
I have had them ... and not only because of pregnancy and yes I hate them too ... I am sure that people know when I've got them because I walk around with a really pained expression on my face!!! I always feel that I am being punished for something when I have them!

SofiaAmes · 27/04/2003 23:46

percy, being a lifelong pile expert (I had them way before I even thought about having children), I have found that Proctofoam is the only thing that works. Get your gp to prescribe it and don't accept any substitutes (most chemists have to order it in for you).

I have just had my butt prodded by a series of American doctors in the hope that the bad new that all the english doctors gave me ("You'll have to learn to live with them" "We can operate, but it doesn't really help" was wrong, but unfortunately the diagnosis was the same. Ugh. Men should have babies.

mmm · 28/04/2003 07:50

I heard that the operation is WORSE than the piles, so intrepid masochist that I am, I had my " skin tag" cut off by the usual handsome surgeon with local anaestheic - when he was giving the injection I nearly jumped off the table, but it was ok and didn't hurt afterwards much( even doing a poo, ahem ). But I tell you you think having a baby can be embarrassing ?

Try Germoloids - no prescription needed and I find it better than Anusol (has a local anaesthetic which seems to stop the itching).

Also Fybogel (revolting stuff) to keep your poos soft ... sorry folks.

Apart from that, eat lots of fruit and veg. and hopefully they'll clear up naturally.

edgarcat - I'll be watching the news for reports of a large explosion in Salisbury

bettys · 28/04/2003 10:35

I've been told you can have them injected to shrink them. Has anyone else heard of this?

Thought I was the only one. I get very fed up & moody when they 'pop' up. Still having to use the Lactulose & Scheriproct given to me after birth of DS 4 months ago now & again.
Perhaps there would be less teenage pregnancies if girls were told about piles & stiches.

FarmerGiles · 28/04/2003 21:17

There's a homepathic "tissue salts" remedy made by New Era. It's labelled as being for "backache, lumbago and piles". After a few days of taking it for backache, my post pregnancy piles cleared up. It may, of course, have been coincidence but they did start to come back when I stopped taking the remedy. Available in many chemists, health shops and large branches of Tescos.

SofiaAmes · 28/04/2003 23:34

bettys, I have had mine injected too. The injections don't hurt at all, in fact you can't feel the needle going in. But the injections are only for the internal ones and not the external ones. If your internal ones are very big, then they can aggravate the external ones (push them out more), so the injections can help the external ones a bit. In my case they did nil.
edgarcat, proctofoam is well worth the embarrasment of asking....I'm speaking from 15 years of piles experience.

Nattie · 29/04/2003 00:21

Dear all - this thread has been too cryptic for me. I need details as I've not talked to anybody about my piles. I've had them for 5 years since my first child (I have two now). They've not been that painful just uncomfortable - more so when I'm premenstrual. Do they 'just disappear'? I've got a new herbal application from Boots (some new range that's just on the market) which 'relieves the symptoms' but doesn't say whether it clears them up. Does any application clear them up? I don't think mine are severe enough for surgery or injections. Farmergiles, did the New Era salts actually help them go away?

FarmerGiles · 29/04/2003 08:03

I can't be sure if it was coincidence or not. I took the little pills for backache and noticed that my lone pile was clearing up. I didn't even take the full dose. In my opinion, it's always worth trying these things just in case!

bettys · 29/04/2003 08:26

Thanks Sofia - mine are internal so I think I'll go for the injections. And boring though it seems as a solution, things have improved since I've been eating a bowl of All-Bran every day.
Nattie - the BBC health site is quite a good source of information on piles.
