What good timing: dh has gone into hospital this morning to have his (external, and perhaps also internal) piles operated on. Can anyone tell me how painful it is likely to be for him afterwards, and for how long?

FarmerGiles · 29/04/2003 16:30

From what I understand from a friend (honest!) it will be very uncomfortable but he should have pretty good pain killers perscribed. This friend had a fairly major crop of piles (I believe - we didn't really discuss it as you can imagine!). I can't remember how long this discomfort went on - a week or so I guess. It looked like thery were suffering those shortly-after-birth days when you waddled and sat down gingerly.

Obviously your DH may be better - everyone's different. Once the discomfort/pain had gone, the friend felt better than they'd felt for ages so it was all worth it.

SofiaAmes · 29/04/2003 22:23

sprout, since your dh is presumably male, it will hurt immensely for a very long time and it will be all your fault. Otherwise, for females, my doctor in the usa said that it would be really painful for a week or so and then sore for another 4-6 weeks. A bit along the lines of childbirth. She said that it would eliminate the ones I had, but that if the causes returned (ie pregnancy and/or constipation) that new ones could come back. The only difference between what I was told in the usa and here in the uk was that in the usa it is done with a local anesthetic and in the uk with a general anesthetic. Which one is your dh getting?

motherinferior · 15/10/2003 11:47

Ahem, wanted to update this thread - suppose should have changed name but really can't be ahem arsed - quite frankly if there are lots of pervy blokes hanging around mumsnet they'll probably have piles too.

Any way of getting the sodding thing (one, external, not too much trouble but embarassing) to GO AWAY?

codswallop · 15/10/2003 12:32

ahem I started it! funny my prob has gone now.

time thats the answer

wilbur · 15/10/2003 15:23

Without going too far into the bottom nightmare I've been having since dd was born (there is something worse than piles, but I'm not sure you'd want me to share), I would also recommend the dreaded pelvic floor exercises as they do help the muscles to tighten and be less likely to let anything, er, slip through. They also send more blood to the affected area, making it faster to heal. Altogether now, squeeze...

motherinferior · 16/10/2003 17:23

OK. Time great healer and all that. Congrats, coddy!

mummysurfer · 28/01/2004 18:57

or this

mrcheese · 28/01/2004 18:58

did youbeat me too it?!!

noddy5 · 28/01/2004 19:36

oh my god this is so embarressing but relevant.I am having a local to remove a couple of skih tags which are supposedly the remainders of post pregnancy piles. My son is 9 so its about time.Is it painful?I was led to believe it was v minor and I havent even really made any childcare plans for that week

colette · 28/01/2004 20:42

Thanks
Think I will try germoloid first. Yes I am postnatal but ds is 6mnths old , he has a lot to answer for

SofiaAmes · 28/01/2004 21:53

sorry, but dd is 16 mo. and my piles still haven't gone.(and I still piss myself if I run down the street) Though I did have them before ever having children, but never this bad. Proctofoam is the only thing I've found that helps at all. I think that if I ever found time to do some exercise and strenthened all my lower muscles, pelvic and stomach that it would all get better.

Rhubarb · 29/01/2004 15:43

Yikes! I was kinda hoping mine would go soon! Ds is now 7 weeks and I still have piles, I'm using Anasol too with no effect. Drs gave me lactose to soften everything, but trouble is that ds got explosive bottom because of it! Reading these I really hope I don't have them for months to come! I'll start doing my pelvic floors again!

motherinferior · 29/01/2004 16:09

Mine appear to have gone. Famous last words, of course.

loed · 04/02/2004 18:13

Noddy5 - Have you been yet. I have my consultation for the same thing v soon and I am convinced I will die of embarrassment. It was hard enough talking to the Dr (female) who didn't really think it important enough to waste resources on. I was very upset after that as it had been really hard to bring up - its hardly lifethreateing but I am conscious of them all the time and they really get me down. Anyway she did refer me in the end.

Please le me know how you get on and what I can expect. I haven't found this mentioned anywhere else in relation to childbirth.

mummysurfer · 05/04/2004 18:43

i'm in agony today how did you get on loed

TheCODfather · 05/04/2004 18:44

I cant believe my thread is still running1

allatsea · 05/04/2004 18:59

i still can't believe that one day you can push out something the size of a grapefruit and the next you struggle with anything bigger than a sprout! 18 weeks and counting, seem like old friends now...

Bugzi · 20/04/2004 14:30

So glad I found this thread. Have had piles for years and just hoped they might disappear on their own. Sadly not. Have a 20 month old dd and they have got very bad recently - tons of blood every time I go to the loo (for a number 2) sorry to be so graphic but I am getting a little concerned. Should I see a doctor or just give the Anusol (or whatever) a bash first. Is it normal for them to bleed?

noddy5 · 20/04/2004 14:39

I had them removed and so far its completely normal should have had it done ages ago-not painful at all!

PcCOD · 29/09/2006 17:13

.

Elibean · 29/09/2006 17:15

Cod, did you bump this thread for me or is this Meant To Be?!?!?

NotABraBurningOtter · 29/09/2006 17:27

lol at this thread

Elibean · 29/09/2006 17:32

edgarcat IS cod...or was....aha. Glad yours cleared up. Thanks to this thread I just found out my dh knows all about proctofoam to think we've been together over ten years and I never knew

rascals · 29/09/2006 19:01

Hi,
just wondering, anyone thats used proctofoam, have you also experience of sheriproct & is proctofoam better than sheriproct?
Just asking cos Hospital where gave birth & my G.P both have always given me sheriproct.I find its quite good for the dreaded piles, but if theres something better,i.e this proctofoam ,I'm going to ask my G.P for it! Thanks!
P.S Is it an ointment/cream/suppositries?!
