...eating a toffee and we are going away for a week on Sat morning. It doesn't hurt though is very rough. Will it be ok for a week or do I need to see emerg dentist before I go? Bugger.

Oh thanks for speeedy reply! Reassuring that isn't going to suddenly turn agonising - I can cope if it's just rough. Thanks (no more toffees for me)

buy 'anbesol or bonjela'- so IF you do get any discomfort whilst away, you will be prepared!

HotCrossGoober · 09/04/2009 21:43

I do this a lot.
Teeth are shite.
Never eat toffees now.
If there is no pain it'll keep til you get back.

Daffodingles2 · 09/04/2009 21:46

Is it just the tooth or is it filling as well? Can you feel a hole?
Having appalling teeth, I would book the emergency appt tomorrow and not risk it.
Unless you are staying in this country? If so, I would stock up on Nurofen and make a note of the emergency dentist wherever it is you're going.

permabagofminieggsonthego · 09/04/2009 21:46

Thanks for reassuring replies - thought I might have ruined our first hol in ages - will get some Bonjela. Toffees are the devil's own sweets.

Happened to me not that long ago.

After a day or so you won't notice the roughness

Dentist said it's not decayed just crumbled, am getting filling next week

permabagofminieggsonthego · 09/04/2009 21:50

I think it is a whole cusp that has come off rather than the centre of a filled tooth coming out IYSWIM. We are going to West Wales - sharing a cottage with another family - the hubby is a french chef so eating might be a feature! Perhaps this is God's way of protecting myself from my gluttonous desires! I might just ring dentist and see what they say and will def take nurofen - thanks.

That's what I think has happened sweetkitty - it's a pain isn't it. Good that you are getting sorted.

They sell temporary filling kits in boots, may be worth a look, see if it'll help. I'd say you're ok for a week. A chunk of my tooth fell out and I didn't et any pain for over a year, but when the pain comes, it comes bad!!! So please get it seen when you return from your hols.
I've been told that I'll need to be sedated in order to get the remainder of my tooth out, so do go before it gets to the stage I'm at

spicemonster · 09/04/2009 21:53

I broke a bit off my tooth a few weeks ago and I still haven't been to the dentist because it isn't hurting. I've done it before and it was fine. I'm avoiding this one because it's basically the side of the tooth which has a filling in the middle and unless I want to look like Jaws, I'm going to have to have a white filling. Which is ££££

Liskey · 09/04/2009 22:00

DH broke a tooth and didn't go to the dentist for a year - by that time he needed root canal on it - please go to dentist when you get back.

PS I avoid all toffees now as I have a crown on my front tooth which many years ago when a child I pulled off eating a toffe.

Toffees are BAD.

permabagofminieggsonthego · 09/04/2009 22:01

Good idea re temp filling kits - def worth doing that till I can get to dentist - thanks. Hope you get your tooth sorted soon lbb - that sounds painful. Luckily mine is right at back so won't look bad however they fix - white fillings are so expensive aren't they.

permabagofminieggsonthego · 09/04/2009 22:02

Oh no re crown at front - that would def be a dental emergency!

MargaretMountford · 09/04/2009 22:03

toffees are bad - I broke a bit of tooth on a Curly Wurly - have never had one since (though I suck on other chewy sweeties and I know I'll regret it) Broke a bit of filling last time the day before going away and it survived, but do go asap.

permabagofminieggsonthego · 09/04/2009 22:03

I remember a poor girl at uni tripping and snapping both of her front teeth off at the gumline.

MargaretMountford · 09/04/2009 22:04

eek ! I accidentally smashed a boyfriend's front crown with my head

permabagofminieggsonthego · 09/04/2009 22:07

Ah, was that the end of a beautiful friendship?!

permabagofminieggsonthego · 09/04/2009 22:08

That's quite impressive in a sick sort of way Margaret!

I kept the broken bits I think ! he was surprisingly forgiving

mrsmaidamess · 09/04/2009 22:09

I did exactly the same as you, waited about a week to see the dentist becasue it was rough, not because it hurt. She x rayed me...and said I would need a specialist crown costing £800!!!!

I'm not goping to have that donebtw, cabn't afford it. The moral of the story DON'T EAT TOFFEES. Or fruitella , come to think of it. Or wine gums. Its not worth it.

MargaretMountford · 09/04/2009 22:11

chewing gum is bad too,the constant grinding away puts unnatural pressure on your teeth

permabagofminieggsonthego · 09/04/2009 22:11

Oh great, that's more than cost of the holiday! So what will you do then?

OP posts:
permabagofminieggsonthego · 09/04/2009 22:12

Soup through a straw for me from now on then.

OP posts:
mrsmaidamess · 09/04/2009 22:17

Well the dentists receptionist was soo helpful . She said my manky tooth needed another deeper root canal doing on it, hence the £800 cost including crown.

BUT she also said the temporary white filling I've had put on it should last for ages , as its what some dentists use as proper filling material.

So I've said No to the crown, my choice, my teeth. But I have stopped eating chewy sweets, and chocolate, started flossing for Britain and have bought all maner of disclosing tablets and funny brushes to keep my teth better cleaned.
