...eating a toffee and we are going away for a week on Sat morning. It doesn't hurt though is very rough. Will it be ok for a week or do I need to see emerg dentist before I go? Bugger.

My tooth had started to crumble. Why does it always happen when dentists are closed for four days. Am waiting for dh to come home with temporary filling kit.

lou33 · 10/04/2009 12:17

i did this once a couple of years ago biting on a sugared almond one xmas

i couldnt get seen for a few weeks, it didnt hurt but was sharp, and i was ok til new year

i guess it depends if you have exposed the nerve at all

southeastastra · 10/04/2009 12:20

i have a broken one and just left it, another bit fell off the other week and now i have to have the whole tooth removed.

lou33 · 10/04/2009 12:21

i couldnt get an nhs dentist, so ended up paying 50 quid for mine to be done privately

kiddiz · 10/04/2009 12:56

I did this a couple of weeks ago to one of my back teeth. I broke off one corner eating tictacs! Saw my denist the next day (I have a brilliant nhs dentist)and he bonded some white stuff to the tooth. No idea what it was but it was very quick and painless....no drilling or filling involved. The tooth is now fine. It cost me about £16.

Thanks for all really helpful & reassuring responses. Have spoken to my lovely dentist on phone and he says s/be ok till after hol and to just keep clean and rub Sensodyne on it if it hurts and see him as soon as get back - hopefully not for an £800 fix Mrsmaidamess! Happy Easter
p.s. I heart Mumsnet!

Old thread I know but my back tooth has just just broken-about a quarter of it come away, no paim but sharp against tongue. How much did it end up costing you? What was needed? I still have my maternity exemption but not sure if that will cover it?!

Matildathecat · 24/06/2014 19:14

I think it will be covered by your exemption. I broke my back molar last year biting on a cherry stone. The dentist managed to rebuild it using white filling and it wasn't especially expensive even though I had to pay.

Call up and get an appointment. It could get very painful.

A1983 · 25/06/2014 19:27

Well I went today-the 'new' dentist (been there a week) told me I needed a crown, and only silver is on the nhs with my maternity card. I also need a filling on the one next to it and a white one is £120. So after speaking to a friend who received a free white filling from same surgery, different dentist last week I've arranged to see her next Monday. Annoying as I wanted it sorted sooner but really don't want a metal mouth! I would pay for a white crown but not the £500 quoted to me today...

Matildathecat · 25/06/2014 19:30

No, maybe discuss the discrepancy with the practice manager? Another dentist may not even recommend a crown. Annoying.

VivaLeBeaver · 25/06/2014 19:35

I did this with a jelly bean. I used an emergency DIY filling kit I had in the house. Went to the dentist the next day who said it needed a filling rather than a crown. I had to wait a week for the filling.

VivaLeBeaver · 25/06/2014 19:36

If it gets worse you can find an emergency dentist in Wales. Dh had to do this once when we were in Cornwall. They did a filling there and then. Wasted a morning though.

SwedishEdith · 25/06/2014 19:36

If you can get a crown with your maternity exemption I'd get that. I got a porcelain one 17 years ago under my exemption but don't know if anything has changed since then.

VivaLeBeaver · 25/06/2014 19:38

Ah, didnt realise it was a zombie thread.

A1983 · 25/06/2014 20:46

I've just re-started the thread but probably should have just made a new thread!

Anyway apparently I cannot get a porcelain crown on nhs/free but I really don't want a silver one. I will ask about a bonded crown as that's porcelain ontop of metal, so may be cheaper. I will take up the discrepancy if the second dentist on Monday says I need to pay for a white filling on the other tooth.

A1983 · 25/06/2014 20:48

And yes it seems so sad to think the remaining 3/4 of my tooth will be drilled down for a crown, the x-ray showed the tooth had broken just above the nerve/gum
