I seem to get period pain in my pelvis and legsrather than my stomach- anyone else?

I have been having periods au naturel for around a year now (after years on the Pill) and have noticed a definite increase in PMT. The strange thing is that the pain I experience for the first couple of days is centred on my pelvic bones and everything between them, and down my inner thighs, rather than the low stomach pain I remember from my teenage period pains. I get a very heavy, dragging feeling, like downward pressure. (Actually I often get the same painful sensation the day after sex.) I have had two CS births and no problems with incontinence or muscle control to speak of.

Does anyone else recognise this?

Ooooh yes, sounds like me. I also labour in the same way. Dont do anything normal me.

donnie · 02/04/2009 21:45

I sometimes get this, and heavy pains down the tops of my legs. It's normal (I hope)!

theDreadPirateRabbits · 02/04/2009 21:47

Sounds very familiar. Do you feel an overwhelming urge to pull your knees to your chest?

Pendulum · 02/04/2009 21:51

to DreadPirateRabbits: not exactly, but I do find myself rocking my pelvis back and forth continually.

those of you who have replied, if it's not too personal, can I ask if you get the same symptoms after sex?

Nope sorry. Although i do get the dragging if i stand for too long.

Pendulum · 02/04/2009 22:00

hmmmm I switched from pads to a mooncup about 6 months ago- a big success in most respects, but maybe my body has 'ishoos' with having things, er, inserted?

heh heh- that would go down really well with DH....

I get this too, have done ever since my periods started. Get pains in my thighs and pelvis no-where else. I also get ovulation pains in my ovaries.

Pendulum · 02/04/2009 22:08

me23 yes, I have noticed what I assume are ov pains too- have never noticed them before.

ok this is quite reassuring- it's not just me! I have had a clear smear very recently so not too concerned but it just seemed a bit odd.

I get lower backache and pain in the tops of my legs, also in the pelvis particularly since having DS. It's crap. My labour pains were all in my legs as well - not great when you're being forced to walk around.

steviesgirl · 02/04/2009 22:13

Yep. Sounds familiar. I also get a lower back ache and at the tops of my legs too. I also get funny achey twinges in my arms and fingers during my period. It's weird, but must all be down to hormones.

theDreadPirateRabbits · 02/04/2009 22:33

Oh. My. God. I've just realised I'm comparing period pains with complete strangers on the internet. I don't know whether this a positive outcome of the sexual revolution, or a sure sign that I really must get a life

Granny22 · 02/04/2009 22:38

Yes me too and labour pain in buttocks and thighs only. Thankfully all behind me now!

nellynaemates · 03/04/2009 19:06

Yep, I'm the same. Pains in pelvis, legs and lower back but really not as much in the stomach area.

psychomum5 · 03/04/2009 19:16

I get this.

mine is apparently because I have a retroverted uterus......it rests on different nerves.

mine has been retroverted since DD1, so I know that this made a difference.

chocolepew · 03/04/2009 19:19

Pychomums right, a draggy feeling is when your womb is tilted.

Claire2009 · 03/04/2009 19:28

I get period pains in my left shoulder blade area and my legs. Very strange indeed.
I've had two sections also...I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

DiamondHead · 03/04/2009 19:35

I get that.
Pain in my pelvic joints, especially when I'm standing still. I felt the same pain a lot in late pregnancy and similarly to you, I feel it the day after sex.

This has only a happened since I had children.

I had natural deliveries but was once told I had a retroverted uterus, so that's interesting.

littlelamb · 03/04/2009 19:42

Can I ask those of you who have a retroverted uterus what position your babies were in? Both of mine have been OP and was told that it was possibly because of the positioning of my uterus or the shape of my pelvis.

theDreadPirateRabbits · 03/04/2009 20:11

Um, what's a retroverted uterus? Does it make spine to spine labours more likely? How does it retrovert?...

janeite · 03/04/2009 20:15

When I had a smear test recently and mentioned bad period pains, especially in the lower back and pelvis, the nurse said it was because I had a tilted uterus. I had two vaginal deliveries without knowing this though. In fact, I am sitting with a hot water bottle on my lower back and another in between my legs as I type this!

Sheeta · 03/04/2009 20:21

Always had this... dull achey pains down the back of my legs, whole pelvis aches. Kind of feels like my bottom half is threatening to fall off...

good to know it's not just me!!

luvaduck · 03/04/2009 20:25

me too
is normal
ovarian/uterine pain quite often referred down legs

is horrible
luckily am preggers again so no periods for at leadt ayear hopefully

luvaduck · 03/04/2009 21:26

claire 2009
shoulder blade pain is becasue of something irritating your diaphragm

worth mentioning to your GP

maybe you have endometriosis??that would be my thought given your history

Twinklemegan · 03/04/2009 22:44

Yep retroverted uterus and an OP baby. I was also told that DS's position was probably due to the shape of my pelvis/womb. I understand that it can also make conceiving more difficult because whatever you're told to do to improve your chances, you basically have to do the opposite.

mooseloose · 03/04/2009 22:50

me too - when I have a heavy day my legs feel really heavy too.
