Help! What can I do to help toothache?

Hello. I have had a major toothache since yesterday. It is SO painful, I have felt sick and dizzy from it. Never had it like this before - what can I do? I am pregnant too which doesn't help on the painkiller front. I have taken paracetamol but it isn't doing much. PLEASE recommend something to help ease the pain!!

put ambersol liquid on it (the teething liquid).. stings like hell to start with.. but it does help.. then use a temporary filling and get yourself to the dentist asap in tomorrow!!

ouch for you!!!

Whats co-codamol? Is it ok in pregnancy? I though paracetamol was the only thing we can take? Where do I get it from?

NCNS - I don't have any of that at home - will teething powder do the same?

can't see why teething powder won't work tbh.. just read the packet regarding use in pregnancy

soon2befamilyof4 · 08/03/2009 12:08

Oh thats good about the co-codamol - I have really bad back pain too so I guess that will help that too? I had thought stuff like that is prescription only but that is good news.

I have some co-codamol on the way!
Used teething powder and it worked for about 15 mins max.

Is bongela safe in pregnancy?

Have you got an out of hours dentist?? might be worth a search for?

soon2befamilyof4 · 08/03/2009 12:33

What time do you think it would be safe to take it? I took paracetamol about 9.30-10am? My mum is stopping off to get it for me as she was already round the corner so will be half hour or so before it gets here? Do you think it is ok to take it then? My body is used to paracetamol and if I wasn't pregnant, I probaby would have taken another dose now .

do you have to pay for an out of hours one? we are completly skint?

OP posts:
cheekysealion · 08/03/2009 12:39

you shouldnt have to pay as you are pregnant,,,

hope you get some relief soon

BCNS · 08/03/2009 12:39

Don't know if you have to pay.. but you should have someone in your area ( some hospitals have them) seeing that your pregnant and entitled to free.. i can't see why they would charge.

Our dentist have an out of hours number to call, maybe yours does?

soon2befamilyof4 · 08/03/2009 12:56

I don't have my maternity exemption card thing - the never sent it through. My own dentist don't ask for it as we have been going there since I was a baby where as somewhere else might ask to see it?

My mum is coming here with the co codamol in a bit and she will know if our own dentistMy will see me out of hours. I hate making a fuss though.

I am also panicking about it because I am extremly needle phobic and usually if I have to have anything done - even a filling, I get referred to another clinic that put me out to do it. Obviously this isn't going to be possible so don't know what to do!

Argh, the chemist are saying you can't take codine during pregnancy? Which is what my doctor said about it fo rmy back. I have asked her to get it anyway while I look it up?

If you say it is definalty ok though should I just take it?

OP posts:

I found this:
The safety of codeine for use during pregnancy has not been fully established. If codeine is used near term in the third trimester it may cause breathing difficulties or withdrawal symptoms in the baby after birth. This medicine should be avoided during pregnancy, unless considered essential by your doctor, and then only used if the expected benefit to the mother outweighs any potential risk to the baby. Seek medical advice from your doctor.

But they are here now and getting very tempting if they are going to help. But don't want to hurt baby

Thanks - have just taken 2. If it was safe enough to take all the time though - I would love it for my back ache!

Rinse your mouth regularly with warm (boiled water from a kettle) salty water, tastes foul but can help to relieve any infection building up.

soon2befamilyof4 · 08/03/2009 14:52

Thanks, will do. Haven't really felt any relief from the tablets yet BUT teething powder is REALLY helping but only for about 20 mins - how much do you think it is ok to take? It is litterally the difffernce between being in tears with the pain and just having the pain there in the background that isn't bothing me.

Can I take a sachet every 20 mins? I am getting very desperate!!!

Bumping because I am in so much pain and everywhere will be closing for sunday hours sooon!!

Do you think NHS might be able to help me at all?

OP posts:
smudgethepuppydog · 08/03/2009 15:57

NHS Direct have got to be worth a try. I have no idea on teh dosing for teething powders sorry.

soon2befamilyof4 · 08/03/2009 16:00

Well it says that a baby over 6 months, can have one every hour or as needed - so I am hoping that means that for an adult, they can have as much as they like?

I am trying to find some sort of teething gel or bongela but can't find any at home. Not 100% sure they are safe but if they are, I might be able to alternate between that and the powder.
