tonsillitis - is it infectious?

Google is giving me various answers wondering if anyone knows?

it's a bacterial infection that causes it, so in that respect the bacterial infection is contagious, however I don't think that everyone who has a throat infection from the same bacteria will necessarily develop tonsillitis, if that makes any sense.

giraffescantdancethetango · 23/02/2009 00:00

Yer I see what you are saying thanks. See I am not sure if I should work with it? Due back from holiday on Tue (work with small children) Going to get a Drs appointment for tomorrow - well need to get someone else to get me one I have literally no voice! Not even a squeak, so I suppose if that doesnt return then I will be off anyway! I will ask Dr but I am impatient for an answer now

You don't hear of it going round families in the same way as a cold or tummy bug would so it isn't that infectious.

I have also had it without either of my DSs getting it. However, I had one particularly memorable summer a few years ago where some bug kept pinging backwards and forwards between the boys and DS1 had 3 bouts of tonsilitis in 9 weeks and DS2 2 ear infections and 1 lot of tonsilitis. I suspect it was viral though as neither responded particularly well to ABs.

Are you sure it is tonsilitis - I don't often hear of people losing their voices due to tonsilitis. Could it be laryngitis (sp)? I would have thought that wasn't very contagious.

unpaidworker · 23/02/2009 00:30

Yes, I think it is. My DD suffered a lot with it and I caught it a few times.

giraffescantdancethetango · 23/02/2009 02:42

Not sure Niecie I am very prone to sore throats and losing my voice a bit with them. But this time its completely gone and the pain is different - like I have a knife stuck in tonsils.

They are very red and then i looked with a wee torch thing and they have large white spots on them (which looks just like tonsilitis pics on google) I could very well be wrong I shall google laryngitis.

giraffescantdancethetango · 23/02/2009 02:43

Oh and very swollen too - meet in middle.

OP posts:
giraffescantdancethetango · 23/02/2009 02:47

Could have both then? NHS thingy says Laryngitis often goes along with tontilitis. I am sleeping by they way but keep waking up in pain and having to take whatever medicine im due to get back to sleep.

Plus its nice to be able to "chat" on here since I cant talk in RL. lol

TinkerBellesMumandFiFi2 · 23/02/2009 03:05

I wouldn't work with it, it's quite nasty whether or not it's contagious.

Tink and I both wentr down with that snd a chest infection. I couldn't move for days.

Niecie · 23/02/2009 03:13

Sounds nasty whatever it is. I don't think I have had laryngitis, not total voice loss anyway. I have heard other people say that it doesn't necessarily hurt, just that they can't speak so if you have pain, spotty tonsils AND no voice perhaps you do have both. You poor thing. I don't think I would be going to work if I were you, not unless you make a miraclous recovery by Tuesday.

I should be in bed too but can't sleep due to falling asleep with DS2 this earlier this evening - numpty (me not him - he was meant to go to sleep).

I'm just watching Holby City and then I'm off to bed - I didn't see it last week so I shall take the opportunity whilst I am up.

Hope you feel better soon.

giraffescantdancethetango · 23/02/2009 03:18

Yer tink I kind of think its unlikely I will be hugely better - and how can I look after the children with no voice? I think it would be very very difficult. Just dont want to let my boss down

You know if you say SSHHHH I can make noises like that and say some very very whispered words by doing that while making the shape but if I try to make the sounds from further back nothing comes at all, in the past its always been croaky/very very hoarse. Feels bizzare.

I would love some icepoles right now

Thanks.

sorry- OT but I read the book from which your name derives for the first time today.. and I found it very touching!

nooka · 23/02/2009 04:03

giraffe take time off and recover properly. You won't be any good to anyone if you are ill and go to work, and you shouldn't feel that you have to, even if other people are relying on you. Get to the doctor, most tonsillitis is bacterial and will respond well to antibiotics, you should find that you feel a great deal better in after about three days. Don't go back to work until you do. Otherwise you may well find that you get ill again, or don't recover properly. Plus I really don't think that parents would be very happy to have you there, even if you are not very infectious.

giraffescantdancethetango · 23/02/2009 11:07

Deffinetly tonsillitis - she had a 2 second look and laughed and said ok I dont need to see anymore. Said its accute. Got high temp too. Have eyrithromycin (allergic to penicillin) Had to write everything down for her, literally no words come out

Off to bed with me then. She said to be off work until at least Wed.

TY for advice

each peach - its good isnt it

Niecie · 23/02/2009 11:28

Oh nasty.

Keep eating the icepoles. Hope you feel better soon.

LackaDAISYcal · 23/02/2009 12:42

poor you . Rest, lots of fluids and ice-cream and I hope you get better soon

suwoo · 23/02/2009 12:47

I have it too. I'm 16 weeks pregnant and have both kids at home with the vomiting bug- will you please fel sorry for me too?

I need to find someone myself to cover my work for me and no-one can

MadameCastafiore · 23/02/2009 12:56

Gargle with hydrogen peroxide solution (mega cheap from chemist!) - it really tastes foul - your tonsils will start fizzing as the bacteria starts oxidising and dying but I guarantee if you have tonsilitus it will be gone in 24 hrs.

Do not swallow it though.

I am allergic to the family of ABs they use to treat tonsilitus and so until could have tonsils out had no other option - it really does work though and is better than keeping on with antibiotics.

giraffescantdancethetango · 23/02/2009 12:57

Aww suwoo.

Have you been to Dr? Im trying to bring my temp down so have flung window open but am shivering
My dad just popped round for 2 min to hand in my birthday presents (was on 20th) and have loads!! They are from him, my sis, aunts, uncles etc. Cant be bothered opening them though, just no energy.

Have you got a voice suwoo?

(not too many though need to keep some for myself)

OP posts:
suwoo · 23/02/2009 13:03

Yeah I have a voice, not like when I get laryngitis, its just the pain in my throat and the achey bones and headache thats a nightmare. DS is screaming his head off and I can't get my head down until I have sorted out my cover for tonight.

giraffescantdancethetango · 23/02/2009 13:09

Surely its your employers responsibility not yours?

Do you have a sore tummy at all? I do but not sure why.

Can you put tv on for DS? And feed him junk nutricious treats? Poor you

OP posts:
suwoo · 23/02/2009 13:18

I am already doing that with DS . DD is upstairs watching Disney channel. I do have a tummy ache, but the kids have had the vomiting bug and I am pg, so not sure if its more related to one of those things. I'm self employed unfortunately so need to do it myself. God, tonsilitis is shit isn't it.

MadameCastafiore · 23/02/2009 13:20

Really girls - get down chemist and get Hydrogen peroxide - you will be cured if it is bacterial tonsilitus.

suwoo · 23/02/2009 13:26

Presume mine is bacterial, have just googled it and seen its OK for pg. OK Madame, will go and get some .

Niecie · 23/02/2009 15:10

Tummy aches are common with tonsilitis. There are glands in your stomach that swell up with the infection.

DS got it a lot when he had repeated bouts of tonsilitis so I asked the docs as I was wondering if it was just lack of food/drink.

Coincidentally, I was just reading that 90% of tonsilitis is viral but I know from experience that if you have pus spots on your tonsils it is bacterial so have a look, if you can.

giraffescantdancethetango · 23/02/2009 18:28

I am spewing everywhere Not sure whether I can keep taking the antibiotics and pain killers on an empty tummy?

But have a temp. aaargh so confused.
