I am very apprehensive about it as I am that my slight glimmer of hope of getting pg will have gone and I am also not sure what to expect. I have PCOS and can no longer cope with the symptoms, someone please reassure me.

TIA

Hi, I have got a mirena (in fact I will have had it in 5 years next month and will have to make a decision on whether to have another one or not).

The nurse/dr found it difficult to insert mine due to the fact that both my births were c sections.

It was uncomfortable and I had period like cramps.

I felt sick and queasy for a couple of days afterwards.

The dr advised me to take a couple of paracetamol about 45 mins beforehand which I did and to also make sure that I ate some toast just before leaving to go have it done.

I am sorry if the above sounds scary, but your pain threshold is probably a lot better than mine and if you have had normal births the coils are a lot easier to insert.

singyswife · 09/02/2009 14:01

Hiya

Have you had any problems with it in?? Wieght gain, hormonal outbursts??

Can I ask, did you get it for contraception or for something else?

Hi Bellavita, I had Mirena fitted just after birth of my 1st, apart from heavy period pains, it was fine. Doc never suggested to me anything about taking painkillers or toast (?!!). Hope it all goes ok-it should.

singyswife · 09/02/2009 14:07

I havent had any mention of painkillers or toast either but may take painkillers just to be sure.

I had one fitted in October. THe procedure wasn't exactly nice (I commented during it that it would make having smears feel like a walk in the park) but it didn't last that long.

I took painkillers before hand - I think eating beforehand would have been a good idea as I felt faint afterwards. If I were doing it again I would have someone else drive me home as I had to stop the car for a bit.

Had cramping pains for about 24 hours but since then all has been fine. Had one period about a month later and since then nothing

No weight gain as far as I can tell and haven't been any more hormonal than I ever am.

bellavita · 09/02/2009 14:11

I have to watch my weight anyway, so on that score no. However, hormonal outbursts well where do I start...

I can be a horrible and nasty. Tis like a red mist that comes down sometimes and I cannot help what comes out of my mouth. Shocking really, because I don't mean to do it. DH is a bloody saint for putting up with me, but he does understand that I cannot help it. I don't know how my boys still love me the way I am with them sometimes.

Yes, I do use it for contraception. We don't like condoms, I hated taking the pill (I took this for many many years prior to my DS's), DH did not want me to be sterlised, he thinks having a general anaesthetic is an unneccesary risk and he has had 3 major ops and did not want to have another visit to hospital for the snip as he has had enough surgery.

bellavita · 09/02/2009 14:12

Oh and forgot to say my periods have been non existent (apart from spotting in the first few weeks of having it fitted).

singyswife · 09/02/2009 14:13

Thanks for the replies Bellavitta. I am going on my own but I may walk there and back rather than take the car. I am sooooooo not looking forward to it.

anyone else on today?

OP posts:
trulyscrumptious43 · 09/02/2009 14:22

I have a Mirena - it's brilliant. No periods for 5 years now, I love it. No weight gain (and I'm 43) and I'm far less emotional than I used to be before. Used to cry at anything and everything.
But-
I am a complete wimp about having them put in and my GP let me have it done under general anaesthetic. This was after years of having me fall to peices when jusy getting smears done. My consultant used to tell me to have a G&T before I came in for a smear.
And I've had my GP give me valium to go in for a colposcopy (driving not recommended!)

Best of luck. Some good strong painkillers, a hot water bottle, and a tipple of your choice will smooth the way. Be good to yourself and let yourself be an invalid for the day after.

singyswife · 09/02/2009 14:28

Hi, I am working the day after, is that not wise then??? Just how much pain am I going to be in>?? I get it done at 2pm tomorrow, when will I feel better. I really am shitting myself about getting it done. Boo hooo I really want to cancel it but this is my last hope to feel better.

OP posts:
bellavita · 09/02/2009 14:36

You will be ok . Just make sure that you put your feet up when you get back and relax until you go to bed.

Take some pain killers with you to work just in case you need them.

I think if you have given birth vaginally, then the coil is a lot easier to insert.

Having said that I am worrying about what I am going to do next month - whether to have another one inserted or not and to take that chance that I may or may not end up pregnant at the ripe old age of nearly 44 and DS2 is now 9

singyswife · 09/02/2009 14:38

Hope you make your decision soon bellavitta. I am not having it done for contraceptive reasons but for health reasons, I would like more children but my damn malfunctioning overies took care of that for me. lol.

Thanks for answering, sorry I sound so pathetic.

I had a mirena fitted when ds was about 7 weeks old and it was abolutley FINE! And I have a weirdy deviated cervix (so they tell me!) which meant it took a bit longer than usual to put in. They gave me Ponstan to take home afterwards but I didn't need them. Had only a few cramps and a bit of spotting daily for nearly six months but since then nothing - haven't looked back. And I am a total wimp with these things normally!

Please don't worry! Take some painkillers beforehand if you want to, but I'm sure all will be well. Think positive thoughts

ksld · 09/02/2009 14:41

Depends what work you will be doing really - I felt rather fragile, and had terrible period cramps for 2-3 days, but I would have been fine sitting at a desk dosed up on paracetamol. I had a heated pillow on my belly too which really helped.

I would take paracetamol before you go in - it hurt A LOT, but only for 60 seconds as she put it in (to quote Dr 'It will feel a little uncomfortable now dear').

I have had mine 4 months now and it is settling down - I have had very heavy bleeding each month though, and horrible anxiety attacks which I have never had before. I am persevering (sp?) for 6 months before I give up on it. Last month was the first month since having it fitted that I didn't cry to DH and say I wanted it out.

Good luck with yours - I have heard more reports of how great the Mirena is than of people suffering with it.

singyswife · 09/02/2009 14:42

Thank you. I know I sound totally pathetic but I am truly crapping myself. I am also not looking forward to what it might do to me hormonally etc. I can only try it though.

Thanks

ksld I went back to ask the GP to remove it after about 5 months of daily spotting (nothing like as bad as your side-effects) and she explained that more often than not it can take up to a year for the mirena to 'settle down' so I agreed to give it some more time and I'm glad I did as it's great now.

Good luck singyswife!

singyswife · 09/02/2009 14:53

I am having the bad anxiety attacks now as a result of didgy hormones, this is one of the reasons I am getting it fitted. Also for heavy periods (when I get them) and lots of pain. Doesnt sound like I will be any better off really does it?

OP posts:
singyswife · 09/02/2009 14:53

dodgy hormones even

OP posts:
bellavita · 09/02/2009 14:56

singyswife - it cannot be any worse though than what you are experiencing now can it?

Give it a go, you can always get it removed in say 6 months if there are no improvements (smile)

squeaver · 09/02/2009 14:58

I've had mine for a couple of years. My GP put it in and it was about as uncomfortable as an uncomfortable smear test I would say. My GP does a lot of them (2/3 a week she told me) and I believe that does make a difference.

Do take a coupe of paracetamol beforehand and make sure you go home afterwards and put your feet up and have a rest. Do not do what I did, which was get on the tube and go to the work (BAD idea!!). I did have a few cramps and felt a bit light-headed.

I have had no periods, no weight gain, no side effects at all. I highly recommend it.

singyswife · 09/02/2009 15:01

This is sounding good, everyone I have spoken to prior to today have said, dont do it its terrible etc etc. I am glad I was a wimp and posted on here today.

Thanks guys

OP posts:
peachface · 09/02/2009 15:07

I can also give positive feedback on Mirena.I was advised to take paracetamol beforehand as it can be quite uncomfortable so I took a couple just before my appt but in fact it was ok and seeing as I was really anxious like you), it was nothing like I thought it might be! I found it far more comfortable than a smear test to be honest!
You will have a bit of bleeding and cramping afterwards so be advised to take it easy for a few hours afterwards - try to have a bit of help if you have any energetic toddlers to look after! Good luck - just relax and it'll be easier -it's great once it's in, very liberating!
I've had no weight gain nor problems losing weight (have just lost half a stone successfully so it's obviously not hampering that) and just have vague periods every few weeks! The only side effect I get (which is common apparently) is that my boobs get a bit sore sometimes.

singyswife · 09/02/2009 15:10

Thank you. This is all helping to ease my worries.
