I am very apprehensive about it as I am that my slight glimmer of hope of getting pg will have gone and I am also not sure what to expect. I have PCOS and can no longer cope with the symptoms, someone please reassure me.

TIA

I've had mine 5 months, and have hardly had a period since. I get a bit of a twinge sometimes and I am sort of aware of it. I'm not 100% on having a bit of plastic in there all the time, but its OK.

Since having it I've not had a sex drive. I've also noticed it is harder to hold my wee (sorry if TMI!) but I think its affected something.

But not enough for me to go back and get it checked out.

I don't have PMT anymore.

On the whole, more positive than negative I think.

And yes its uncomfortable having it inserted, and you should rest up for the rest of the day, but then you'll be fine.

Good luck

I have had Mirenas for 15 years now - was on an early trial and loved it so much I went back for more. After 4 I don't exactly enjoy having them changed but it is a very small price to pay for the long term benefits.

Follow all the exellent advice above re paracetamol, taking it easy, hot water bottle.

Warn everyone you will be spending the rest of the day lying in bed demanding tea and chocolate (which you won't need but hey they don't need to know that do they?).

Tell the doc you are very nervous when you get there.

Insertion is short term discomfort for long term gain. Don't focus on tomorrow, focus on a symptom-free future.

Singyswife how did it go? Are you ok?

bellavita · 10/02/2009 15:15

Tartan - was just wondering how she was!

singyswife · 11/02/2009 13:16

Hiya

It wasnt as bad as I had expected although it was painful. Afterwards I actually thought I was giving birth to something, I couldnt beleive how painful it was for the rest of the night. DH looked after me and wouldnt let me do anything (doing nothing is not my style but he made damn sure I did nothing)

I feel sick today and am still sore although not as bad. Hopefully it will settle soon;

Thank you all for getting back to me and helping me to not feel so worried about it.

Glad to hear you've survived

Hope it works for you

singyswife I'm having one fitted in a couple of weeks . How painful would you say it was, on a scale of 1 to 10? I am quite a wimp, was asking for an epidural within an hour of contractions starting

bellavita · 11/02/2009 15:12

for you singyswife. Sickness should disappear soon. I found eating little and often over the first couple of days helped.

Rachmumoftwo · 11/02/2009 15:28

When I had mine, I took a couple of nuerofen about twenty minutes before the fitting and was fine. A little twingy but no worse than a smear, and nothing compared to giving birth.

Does anyone know if it is safe to have sex after the 5 year cut off point? I am waiting for an appointment to get a new one fitted. (sorry for the hijack but it looks like a thread where someone would know).

cheshirekitty · 11/02/2009 17:19

Ibuprofen is better then paracetamol prior to having the mirena put in. Take it about 1 hour before your appointment time.

You can also have paracetamol as well as ibuprofen.

I would advise you take someone with you to your appointment.

Good luck.

Rachmumoftwo, my booklet which I have just got given this week says that if you are using the coil as contraception and are relatively young then you should not have unprotected sex after the five years. If you were using it to combat menopause symptoms then you will be fine.

I am not being cheeky here I am just quoting what the leaflet says.

Allnew, it was painful, maybe about a 3 but it lasts a really short time. The after pains were worse. I was in real pain the night I had it fitted. It will be okay though, it is just like having a bad period. (I gave birth naturally so maybe I have a higher threshold for pain than you). It will be okay, just relax as much as possible, think about something else and take painkillers before you go.
