Any tips on how to deal with perforations ? dd, 3 1/2, woke up at 5.30 this morning with ear ache, gave her nurofen but by the time we saw a dr at 4pm she already had a small tear in her timpanic membrane and pus oozing. She vomited just before we left for the appointment so I guess it happened then. He said not to bathe her or let her get head wet for a few days and she won't let me near to clear it up - yuk !

Thanks. She's her normal bouncy self today except she slept for an hour or so this afternoon. We have 10 days worth of AB's

By the time we saw the doctor (appointment 3.45 but after 4 by the time we got in) she wasn't in any pain anymore. I did give her a painkiller (we have anti-inflammatories in suppository form over here) last night and she slept from 7 until 6.30. Today she insists she doesn't need one so hope we still get a good night.

Hopefully this will be a one-off, although she did have a couple of ear infections as a baby, but what shocked me was that she hasn't had a cold recently to trigger it and that it developed so quickly. I only made the dr's appointment as a precaution because I am on my own with the kids this weekend and didn't want anything to develop when it would be a hassle to get hold of a dr - thank goodness I did.

Think we just have regular Amoxycillin (interpreting the German label!). Your dd is a stoic to tolerate taking it for so long - I have to persuade dd hard to take her spoonful 3 times a day. Must be hard to monitor if she is being sick too, how frustrating, but I suppose there aren't many alternatives .

Hope you get some more positive responses to the problem soon. Can't say I'm looking forward to returning to the NHS based upon your and other recent MNetter experiences.

hi there my son had tonsils and adonoids out and grommits in last october. Been a different child since.Has anybody got any tips on weather or not flying will affect his ears and what kind of ear plugs i can use 4 swimming goin on hols in 5 weeks i want to be prepared.

kcemum · 09/05/2005 10:49

Hi Teeje, flying won't affect your sons ears at all, infact he will find it easier than anybody else as the grommits will allow the pressures in his ears to equalise without having to swallow etc.
as for swimming he will be ok in treated water but if swimming in untreated water i.e medditeranean 9so0 he will need ear plugs. you can get thigs called "bandits" do a google and they should come up. this is te info given to me by our consultant following dd3 grommits 3 weeks ago. hope this helps

teeje · 09/05/2005 12:42

thanks kcemum will look 4 those ear plugs . feel a lot more at ease now you told me bout flying .hope dd3 doin ok after op my son has never been better.

kcemum · 09/05/2005 12:47

Thanks teeje ,dd3 has a cold at the moment and has discharge from both ears , we noticed at the weekend that her hearing had gone down again although not as badly as befor op. Still she has another hearing test soon so hopefully they will tell me it's getting better, Where are you going on your hols?

teeje · 09/05/2005 12:51

were gonna laganas in zante ever been? we normally go to cyprus but we fancied a change this year.so ready for it aswell.

kcemum · 09/05/2005 14:34

no
i've never been to Zante, hope you have a lovely time. Can I ask how long you used the cotton wool soaked in vaseline for ear plugs when you washed his hair? assuming that was the advise given. It's just that dd3 has a total meltdown if we attempt to use them. Don't know what we will do for this when we go away... just hope that she accepts the ear-bandits that wewill get for her!!

Just bumping this for you. My ds has had lots of ear infections in the last 15mnths so I completely sympathise with you, he actually has a double ear infection and tonsilitis at the moment, fortunately we haven't had perforated eardrums. As for parents fussing, so easy for doctors to say that it isn't their child makes me so Angry

foxinsocks · 24/04/2006 16:46

dd's eardrum bursts several times a year - in a way she is lucky because she gets sort of acute ear infections where she is only in pain (allbeit extreme pain) for around 12 hours (normally just as she's going to bed), then in the middle of the night it bursts and she feels better.

Now it has burst - hopefully he might start feeling better (because the pressure has gone). If he has had grommits fitted in the past, could you arrange another appointment with the ENT if you are worried?

lanismum · 24/04/2006 17:20

my dd has an ear infection at the min, she first had it a few weeks ago, both ears were leaking a black coloured gunk, which turned green, then clear, it was quite a lot and was running down her neck at 1 point, the dr give her amoxicillin (sp), they dried up, and she felt better, then on sat she was screaming in the early hours of the morning, and i noticed that 1 ear was leaking pus again, i took her to a and e, and they said her ear drum had burst, and gave her cefalexin, her other ear started leaking pus the next day, but she seems to be ok now.
its really horrible to see all that crap coming out of her ears, i hope she will be ok after this course of antibiotics.
