Hi, I am new to this site but thought I would share my experiences. I had a hysterectomy with rectocele repair on the 13th September (4 weeks post op) and I have had to make an appointment with my Consultant for tomorrow as my rectocele repair has not worked. I am bulging dreadfully down below and it is uncomfortable.

I went into hospital thinking I was having a posterior rectocele repair along with the hysterectomy and when I read my notes in hospital (as you do!) they had crossed out the posterior part and inserted anterior. When my Consultant saw me the day after the op, he didn't mention anything, just said everything had gone well and he would see me in a couple of months.

I will obviously know more tomorrow, but was wondering if anyone else had experienced a unsuccessful operation? I am also curious as to whether he will do the repair so soon after my current surgery or wait for me to recover fully from this operation first? I went private for the op so there is not usually the issue of a waiting list.

This site has been so informative and a great source of advice. xx

hi did anyone else start to feel the stitches after a couple of weeks, whenever i move i can feel sharp stitches digging in and it makes me go really lightheaded has anyone else felt this xxx

dollbowl · 15/10/2010 16:33

hi hate hospitals i had a simular thing i was down for a tot sling and an anterior repair but when i woke up i was told id had a posterior repair as when they started the op they looked at the anterior wall and it was ok but the posterior wall was really bad (which is what i had been trying to tell them all along )but i cant believe they didnt even tell u, ive no idea how soon u would be able to have the posterior repair done but i would have thought you will need to recover from this op first as the rectocele repair is quite a painful thing when u have had it done, all i can say is when u do have it make sure u have plenty of lactalose as this is really helping me at the moment.I hope u get it sorted and have a speedy recovery xxx

Hi- thought I would update. I had a posterior and anterior repair on Tuesday- ended up with mesh. I had no pain after the op but got terrible wind pain the next day which passed. Pack and catheter removed on Thursday and I went home. Only pain is slight pulling from some stitches. Weeing all the time which is a pain and a bit sore. Then this afternoon pain started buidling up- I started to worry after 3 hours- went for a wee and had several bowel movements. Pain is now gone and I feel fine again. I did find myself crying for no reason the day after- I just had tears rolling down my face but didn't feel sad! I don't really have any bleeding. I did a few hours of emails and phone calls today- have to say that so far it is going much better than I hoped. I had low blood pressure on the 2nd day and was a bit woozy but today I have a clear head. I can walk normally- stairs are no problem and I actually feel I could run if I had to.

libbywills · 16/10/2010 10:14

Hiya
Its my first post and would appreciate any replies.

I am due to have rectocele repair shortly but I feel I didnt ask enough questions when I met the Consultant and now I am stressing and panicking.

I have a Vaginal bulge during and after a BM, sometimes it randomly appears too, also my hubby says he has felt it which is not nice for either of us.

The consultant said op was optional but as I hate the bulge and have trouble with BM's I decided to go ahead.

Consultant said I would be in for about 3/4 days, letter says I will be a day patient...... is this right???

Also how long until I can drive?
how long until I can return to work (desk based)?

I am seeing the Pre-Op Nurse for assessment Monday, but would appreciate any advice from anyone with experience xx

Hello, This is my first message here, but have spent very many hours reading past messages. If it is not too late, and if the location is appropriate, Marks and Spencer have some lovely nighties that are neither designed for oldies, or baby doll designs. I hope this is of some help and thank you for reminding me to sort this problem out myslef ready for my own op that I expect to get my date for this week!!!!

Simbacat · 16/10/2010 11:07

Hi- I thought I would keep posting how it is going for me as I found everyone elses experiences so helpful to read and so different. Had op on tuesday and today is Saturday- slept all night- for the 1st time and woke up with absolutely no pain. Can't believe it- been to loo again - had a shower- consultant said no baths for 2 weeks- I hate showers. Slight pulling feeling which I think is stitches- haven't looked yet!!!! Going for a walk around town and a little lunch. Weighed myself this morning- despite hardly eating for 4 days I havecput on 7 pounds which I guess must be water and drug related.

Simbacat · 16/10/2010 11:11

Libbywillis- I have been told can't drive for 2 weeks. I can go back to work whenever I feel ready- I worked from home on day 3 after op. Planning on working next week and then taking leave- back out at clients after 3 weeks. Given how good I feel after 4 days that seems realistic.

libbywills · 16/10/2010 15:02

Thanks Simbacat, glad you are feeling so well. I have read lots of horror stories, its nice to hear a good one xx

Simbacat · 16/10/2010 15:07

Libbywills- ask the nurse lots of questions at the pre assessment. Belucky I spent ages looking for nighties- to be honest I didn't care much what I was wearing when I was in there. As I had a catheter I couldn't wear pants and so I was in a nightie with a sanitary towel stuck between my legs on a waterproof pad on the bed. Covered up with sheet! Sounds awful but to be honest it was fine. I was allowed to walk to bathroom straight away but really they wanted you to stay in bed for 24 hours.

libbywills · 16/10/2010 16:04

I will thank you.

I think I am getting stressed as because I have lost a bit of weight it is not as bad as it was, (secretly hoping it would magically disappear) silly I know.

I read that if I dont have it done now, then eventually it will get worse and I will have to have it done at some point anyway, what have you or anyone else heard?

dollbowl · 16/10/2010 20:52

Hi guys im 2 weeks post op now and im feeling better actually got out the house today, hubby took me down town but only walked for a bit then came home was surprised how much it tired me out,and also i can feel the stitches now, a couple of them are really sharp has anyone else felt this? Libbywills i was told too that if i didnt have it done now it would get worse,i think its best to just get it over and done with, even though im still sore im feeling the benifits of having it done i have no bulge there now and can have bm normally now (even though its still painful at mo)xxxx

Simbacat · 17/10/2010 09:21

Dollbowl- that great that you feeling better. I can feel my stitches as tight- felt it from day 3.

I am now on day 5 after op. Went into town yesterday- pottered for about 2 hours. Felt physically but not mentally tired later in the day. No pain at all now- no pain killers for past 48 hours. My stomach is still really bloated- I couldn't fasten my coat up yesterday- I look about 8 months pregnant. Still weighing lbs extra despite eating much less. Ankles slightly swollen- have to wear the lovely white stockings for 2 weeks.

I still have some wind- taking lactulose but may stop today and see if wind drops off. Lying on my side helps wind- especially straight after the operation.

I was a bit teary again yesterday- no reason at all to explain this. Bleeding is heavier today- I think my period is due and I am wondering iif is that. Did anyone else think they had a period as expected?

dollbowl · 17/10/2010 10:59

Hi simbacat you are doind well day 5 and no pain killers,i have bloating too but is getting better.I had teary days on and off too for no reason but thats gone now so hopefully you will feel less teary in a few days my period is due next week so i will have to see if that comes on cue but i did read a few threads where people said they had theres just after the op too x

libbywills · 17/10/2010 16:54

Thanks "Dollbowl" good to hear that you have lost the bulge etc only 2 weeks after your op, I hope I am doin so well.xx
Pre-op assessment tomorrow, got list of questions ready!!!!!

libbywills · 17/10/2010 16:59

Oops dont know my " from my * by the looks haha

Simbacat · 17/10/2010 17:08

Libbywills- hope it all goes well.

The 2 things i am glad that I took into hospital were loads of baby wipes and m&s antibacterial hand gel. I used the wipes to clean up after the op and still using them now when I go to loo. The hand stuff has been good as the hospital one smelt awful! But also I use it before I so much as change a towel as I want to try to avoid any infection if possible (which I had after 1 birth and it was yeucky)

libbywills · 17/10/2010 17:43

Thats kind of you simbacat I will remember that. Op due on 28th, be glad when its over and done...... hate waiting

PurpleHaze64 · 18/10/2010 09:09

Hi all, 3 weeks post op today.(posterior repair) Was in and out in a day, op at 10.40, out at 3pm, no pack or catheter!:0! Had no pain as meds worked well, Uncomfortable initially and still uncomfortable to sit. Mobile pretty soon and now walking easily tho not quick.

Well worth having the op. Also for those awaiting a TVT sling op, had that one last year...fantastic, you feel 'normal' again! Stitches on the sides can become sore quickly so dont walk too far too quickly!

All the best. xxx

belucky · 18/10/2010 13:06

Thank you for the advice Simbacat. I asked loads, but now can think of so many more questions I would have liked to have asked. Thank goodness for this opportunity to get the opinions of others. Some seem to be walking their dogs after two weeks, but some seem to need several weeks before they are ready. I am expecting/praying for my date this week, and as a result am totally terrified!!! The waiting is so awuful! How much longer to wait with the horrid uncomfortable feelings..... how many more times to have to steel onelself to do those assisted BMs only to end up bleeding in case things were not bad enoughSad. Everyone seems to be taking all this so bravely. I just want to cry Sad. Am I being a total baby here or do others feel the same?

Simbacat · 18/10/2010 13:19

Belucky. It honestly isn't that bad. I really had very little pain and after 6 days it is just sore from bruising. It was the wind that hurt( much better when lying on my side) and not the operation.

My dog is a mad giant young labrador and so I won't we walking her but a little or quiet dog would be fine I am sure. I went shopping on Saturday for a couple of hours and I am walking to the post office later.

I am sure it varies from person to person but don't assume that it is going to be bad for you. I am also working today (from home) and did a few hours on Friday.

I haven't had even a paracetamol since Saturday- but if you do have pain they give you loads of stuff- I left hospital with 4 different kinds on pain killers. My surgeon said don't be a hero about pain- tell them and they can sort it.

What other questions do you have? Don't feel alone.

belucky · 18/10/2010 13:44

Thank you so much Simbacat. Yes, you are quite right... I am feeling alone, or rather I was. I am being optimistic about the op, but recently I had my gall bladder removed, and had a bad reaction to the anaesthetic so that is a bit of a worry although the hospital has taken it under advisement, and hopefully it will be a completely different experience. My dogs are a bullmastiff and a puli, so perhaps I will take more care than I might have done.

About the wind problem, did you have it before the op, or did it not start until afterwards?

Simbacat · 18/10/2010 13:58

No it started after- apparently it is a side effect. The day after it was very painful- no pain at all from the op. I had 3 pillows in a kind if triangle between the bed and the bedside cabinet and sort of propped myself up on my side which eased it and then it slowly passed. The pain was gone by then end of the day but it is still gurgling. I am still sleeping in my side. The morphine apparently stops all the bowel functions and that adds to the wind.

I am still really bloated- like I am wearing a tellytubby suit. I always had a flat stomach but basically now it comes out just below my boobs and I look pregnant- my coat won't fasten. I think it is wind and and water retention- it is going down slowly and it doesn't hurt just gurgling now. Despite eating much less I weigh 4lbs more than before the op and it was 7lbs- must be water retention.

My mother had a bad reaction to anaesthetic - ended up in intensive care but has had 2 operations since then with no problems.

belucky · 18/10/2010 15:07

Sorry to hear about the post op wind and associated bloating etc. This must be really uncomfortable for you. I do hope that it eases its way out of your life sooner rather than later. Did you try the wind eze capsules that are meant to help with this, or was it too severe for this treatment?

Thank you for the feedback on your mother's bad reaction. This really gives me even more hope that all will go well.

Simbacat · 18/10/2010 15:21

Thanks. It isn't causing any pain or discomfort and itvis going down slowly. I only had bad wind on the 1st day in hospital-didn't take anything but thanks for the windeze tip.
