Ok I know, I know, I know, slap for not ever having one.I am only 28 but I think there is something wrong. I came off the depo injection last April with a view to trying for another baby. I have not had a period since. Anyway, the past few weeks its got painful to have sex and afterwards I bleed (badly enough to 'use something') for over 24 hours afterwards. The back of my left hip and pelvis gets stabbing pains in a lot throughout the day. Whenever I go to the toilet (for a number 2!) I end up bleeding from the front end as well.

I need to book an appointment don't I??

Yes, go to the doc, try not to worry, could be lots of very straightforward things, but I'd get yourself checked out asap. Good luck, go on, call them now.

wednesday 5.30. got to ring monday morning though in case they have anything earlier. theres no cervical cancer in the family so it shouldnt be anything as bad as that should it??

Well done for booking an appointment. When I had a breast lump a while ago I told the receptionist I needed to speak to the doctor on the phone that day. When I explained what the problem to the GP I was fitted in the same day and I was referred to the hospital within two weeks.

alittleteapot · 23/01/2009 11:37

I had some weird bleeding once and it was a cervical polyp. They just snip it off and you're back to normal again. Sounds like it could be an infection. Couldn't be an ectopic pg could it? I don't know the symptoms. Are you in pain every day? I think it would be good if they could see before Weds. Maybe you could ask to have a chat with the duty doc on the phone. Try not to worry too much about the dreaded c word, but you do need to get whatever it is sorted soon. I know what it's like to worry that's why you need to see the doc soon.

alittleteapot · 23/01/2009 11:38

Yes, I agree with smudge, speak to a doc today. he or she can decide much better than us if it's urgent.

nickschick · 23/01/2009 11:41

Its no good googling or guessing, get on the fone and ask for an earlier appointment and speak with the doc.

AnAngelWithin · 23/01/2009 11:45

i want to see the lady doctor though and she only works monday and wednesdays. thats why i have to ring on monday to see if shes got any cancellations.

not ectopic pg I don't think. Had negative pg test a couple of days ago cos I did one to check.

I am in pain every day. Some days worse than others. Like really bad period pain, but without the period. The only bleeding I get is like I mentioned in my OP

IME men doctors are lovely and gentle more so than the lady drs ...i havent had a lady dr for 15 years and have had 3 babies.

alittleteapot · 23/01/2009 12:04

I can understand that but I would still talk to the doctor today. If he thinks you can wait to see the lady doctor, fine, but otherwise you should go today. What would you tell a daughter to do if she was in this position? It could be lots of things but some of them would need immediate treatment - he might want to put you on antibiotics for example until they can find out more.

AnAngelWithin · 23/01/2009 12:11

i know i should go asap. but cant see male doctor (long story..abuse issues )

funnypeculiar · 23/01/2009 12:16

Well done for ringing - it's so easy to just hope it'll sort itself out isn't it?

I was going to add to the comments that male doctors can be lovely, but have just seen your last post.

Could you explain a little of your symptoms to the receptionist, so that they can understand that you do need to see the lady doctor if at all possible on Monday (rather than try and put you off, which ime is standard behaviour for GPs receptionists )

AnAngelWithin · 23/01/2009 12:22

the receptionist is new and very abrupt on the phone. I know the old receptionist and shes just left to have a baby.

I am probably an old panic but why not try the A&E if your doctor can't see you sooner? It is probably fine, but you can't wait so long to see someone, can you? The waiting will drive you crazy and the hospital will be the best place for specialists.

You will be fine - just go and get it sorted.

alittleteapot · 23/01/2009 12:35

Yes, I would phone first thing on Monday and if there are no appointments ask to speak to the lady doctor. Sorry to hear you'd had some issues in the past.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

alittleteapot · 23/01/2009 12:42

You could also consider calling NHS direct. They might send you to A and E anyway, and then at least you'd know you'd be properly checked straight away.

alittleteapot · 23/01/2009 12:44

ps i don't mean they'd send you to a and e because this is an emergency, just that they send to a and e at the drop of a hat... (realised I might have scared you more...)

smudgethepuppydog · 23/01/2009 13:24

Do you have a practise nurse you could speak to today? She may be able to get you an appointment for Monday or she may be able to tell you it's not much to worry about and your Wednesday appointment will be fine. Five days seems a very long time to sit and worry.

AnAngelWithin · 23/01/2009 17:20

sorry i had to do the school run and now its too late to ring the surgery anyway. I'm not bleeding at the moment so its ok.

Just been talking to DH about it who said that he thought it 'felt different' there last time

OP posts:
verygreenlawn · 23/01/2009 18:01

I always, always see the nurse - they've got way more experience and tend to be much better at distracting you while all the "stuff" is going on.

Let us know how you get on - please?

TheSmallClanger · 23/01/2009 22:20

The nurse is usually a good first port of call. They can do basic examinations and are sometimes better with "practical" stuff.

If you're really anxious about physical examinations, the doctor on duty should be able to give you a small, single dose of valium to help. It sounds drastic, but it really does take the edge off.

BellaNoir · 23/01/2009 22:49

Seeing GP is best thing. They should do an exam, and may refer you to colpscopy or gynae for further tests. They shouldn't just to do a smear test. As someone else said there's lots of easily sorted out things that can cause bleeding.

asteamedpoater · 24/01/2009 13:10

I agree with BellaNoir - go to the GP, not the nurse as your first port of call, as you are not just going in for a routine smear. The GP can do a proper manual examination of your pelvic area, rather than just doing a smear and some swabs (practice nurses are often not trained to do this, even though in my opinion they should be if they are to be doing most of the smears for the practice). The GP could also give you a view on whether anything that they see during the examination could explain your symptoms - if a nurse saw anything, she'd probably just tell you to see the doctor, resulting in more people than necessary prodding and poking around!

alittleteapot · 26/01/2009 16:51

AnAngelWithin - how are you today? Did you get to see the doc?

AnAngelWithin · 27/01/2009 14:45

hi sorry only just got back online! I didn't get it to see the doctor earlier so am going tomorrow evening. Thanks for thinking of me alittleteapot.
