Depro Jab...is this normal?

onlywantsone · 21/01/2009 17:58

Hey - I had the depro jab for the first time on Dec 30th - wasn't actually aving a AF at the time, but had not had sex so no real risk of PG.

Nurse was happy to give it to me -

I have however been bleeding since last Tuesday.

Normally my periods last 5 days MAX and are very light - this has been thick heavy clotted bleading for now over 7 days.

Getting really hacked off (esp as spose to go on kinky w/e away with new man)Does any one else have experiance with this - also have spots that I dont normally have...

Causes intolerable bleeding in about 1 in 6 women.

onlywantsone · 21/01/2009 18:08

oh GREAT what does that mean?

Spots, weight gain, greasy hair and the like all fairly common side effects with Depo.

Some of the numerous reasons I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot barge pole.

Please don't have another injection unless you are sure you never want any more children. It is evil. Horrible thing that messes up your system, causes infertility and osteoporosis.

Sorry.

When I worked in a women's clinic in the US, the OB/GYN director wouldn't give it any woman unless she'd completed her family.

Don't worry - just be glad you found out now. It is not dangerous, just stupid. Just don't have the next jab and it will be out of your system in a few months.

northwest1 · 21/01/2009 18:18

Why wait until family is complete?

It can do pretty much anything to your periods including stopping them, but 18% of women have periods that are so heavy or irregular that they switch to an alternative.

expatinscotland · 21/01/2009 18:20

The doctor wouldn't give it out to women who were not finished childbearing, north, because she believed it interfered with fertility, as it sadly has with some of these women.

northwest1 · 21/01/2009 18:26

Why not share the risks with the woman and let her decide? It's a reasonable option for example if they can't have a combined pill for some reason and they don't want an implant or coil.

expatinscotland · 21/01/2009 18:28

because a lot of times, you can think one thing at 21, and then feel very differently at 31.

northwest1 · 21/01/2009 18:30

Shouldn't a 21 year old be able to decide what she wants?

expatinscotland · 21/01/2009 18:36

I guess she could go somewhere else to chose, north.

BTW, I wasn't the one who refused to give it out, I was just there as a transcriptionist.

so what exactly are you saying here?

By chosing not to have an unplanned PG in my 20's I may have removed my choice t have a PG at all in my 30's???????????????

smudgethepuppydog · 21/01/2009 18:44

I bled every day for 18 months after having the Depo, I wouldn't ever have it again and would try my hardest to talk any other woman out of ever having it.

wideratthehips · 21/01/2009 18:48

had this injection once after ds1.........felt horrendous.....didn't have it again..had irregular bleeding for months, for upto a week at a time. took ages to concieve next baby which ended in a miscarriage (now have ds2 and expecting no3 in a few weeks)

would not recommend it to friend or foe

FAQtothefuture · 21/01/2009 18:49

I had it for 6 months (so 2 jabs) last year. Was due to have the next on just before Christmas.......my period has already returned . I stopped because I had daily spotting, ot loads, but enough to fark me right off.

However have a friend who's been on it for 3 years and hasn't had any of the side effects.

(obviously too early to tell if it's affected her fertility as she's still on it).

Petrovia · 21/01/2009 18:49

Bloody hell (sorry)
They used to really push this stuff when I was in my twenties. I refused to have any hormonal stuff but the pressure was immense.

I wonder how many women now struggling with fertility have no idea it could be because of this?? How is it still allowed to be given?

wideratthehips · 21/01/2009 18:49

don't panic....you will concieve again!
