Depro Jab...is this normal?

onlywantsone · 21/01/2009 17:58

Hey - I had the depro jab for the first time on Dec 30th - wasn't actually aving a AF at the time, but had not had sex so no real risk of PG.

Nurse was happy to give it to me -

I have however been bleeding since last Tuesday.

Normally my periods last 5 days MAX and are very light - this has been thick heavy clotted bleading for now over 7 days.

Getting really hacked off (esp as spose to go on kinky w/e away with new man)Does any one else have experiance with this - also have spots that I dont normally have...

It can take 9 to 18 months for fertility to return and there is newer concern about osteoporosis and possible longer term effect on fertility. I'll have a hunt around and try and find some precise answers for you.

FAQtothefuture · 21/01/2009 18:52

lets face it the possibly side effects of the pill and the serious side effects aren't exactly pretty either are they?

onlywantsone · 21/01/2009 18:56

right im going to go and see my Dr tomorrow - what on earth do I say to him

I'd just tell him what's worrying you i.e. your bleeding, and now your concerns about fertility and possibly osteoporosis too. Maybe print this thread off and show it to him.

If it's any help at all and I'm sure someone will correct me, but I've had a really good search of the medical journals and can find no evidence that depo will reduce your chances of having a baby after you've stopped it, compared to any other form of contraception. Average time to get pregnant is 9 months, and after 15 months there is no difference in fertility compared to say condoms. I thought there was something else very recently on this but if so I couldn't find it.

Equally there appears to be no significant risk at least in your age group of osteoporosis. There was a warning put on depo in the US that it reduced bone mineral density (which may lead to osteoporosis) but there is growing evidence since then that this is indeed reversible on stopping the depo, and a trial last year reported no increase in osteoporotic fractures.

Talk to your doc.

I had a depo injection in the summer - I had a period for 4 weeks

I now have a mirena

Sidge · 21/01/2009 21:36

Depo-provera is brilliant for some women.

It can cause weight gain, irregular bleeding, PMT and greasy skin, the same as any progesterone-based contraception. Many women find they bleed irregularly after the first injection and then they don't bleed at all after the second.

Long term use with amenorrhea (no periods) can cause reduced oestrogen levels and there is then a reduction in bone density. They now recommend women have their oestrogen levels checked every 2 years, eat a calcium rich diet and do weight-bearing exercise.

There can be a delay in fertility returning after stopping depo where a woman hasn't had periods for some time, but many women find their periods come back within 3 months and are fertile again at that point.

Contraception is a real horses-for-courses issue - there is never going to be something that suits everyone. Just because some women have had bad experiences with depo doesn't mean that everyone will - the downside with depo is that if it doesn't suit you have to wait 12 weeks for it to metabolise from your system.

Your GP might be able to give you norethisterone for your weekend away to stop you bleeding.

onlywantsone · 22/01/2009 09:02

whats the chances he could give me thatto stop me bleeding? Or will that further complicate issues?

i had the injection once. i made me feel awful. didn't bleed but i was sick like i had morning sickness.
that was summer of 2007 and i'm now 6 months pregnant so you won't become infertile because of one injection. the unfortunate thing about the injection is that once it's done you can't undo it (unlike the pill).

AussieLou · 22/01/2009 10:20

I hated it.Worst thing I have ever been on. I had one injection. I put on about 20 kgs, developed adult onset acne, grew hair in wierd places, went very moody, and started lactating (never have had kids). It took about 2 years to get back to normal. I was only 19 when they gave it to me too.

expatinscotland · 22/01/2009 15:45

My hairdresser put on loads of weight, too, like 20kgs, and she's one of those naturally skinny people who normally has to work at gaining weight.

onlywantsone · 22/01/2009 18:34

right - I shant have it again, but as am now 3 weeks into this - any way I can control the bleeding or counter act / fast track it out of my system - at all????

on the flipside - I have one friend who got PG while on the depo and another who got PG within a few months of her last injection.

But yes, like any progesterone based contraception, it can cause irregular bleeding. So would definitely go back to GP and see if they will prescribe something to stop the bleeding.

onlywantsone · 22/01/2009 19:11

oh it just gets better

Norethisterone is what Sidge suggested, perhaps you could ask for some of that.(I'd write it down personally and hand it to the GP, not a clue how to say it!) Good luck. What a nightmare

LazyLinePainterJane · 23/01/2009 07:59

I was on depo for about 3 years. I did put on a good bit of weight, but my periods came back 2 months after stopping and I didn't have any other problems with it.

Saying that, I would not have it again, simply because I know that it could take ages for periods to return and if we decided to TTC I wouldn't want to have to wait an age to do it. Plus, I don't need any more weight.
