Ds has a small patch of rash which is quite bad and which is not going away... Any tips for getting rid of this?

metanium is brilliant - dd had terrible nappy rash ( red and bleeding in parts) whilst in hospital. Washing with water/ cotton wool balls, drying and then putting the cream on after worked a treat.

You might also mix it with a little sudacrem - makes it easier to wipe/clean off.

jobey · 27/03/2003 21:44

again I always find washing with warm water and cotton wool at every nappy change and leaving the nappy off as long as you can to let the air get to it.Also Drapoline is really good .

Enchanted · 27/03/2003 21:47

I have always had great results from Sudacrem (Sorry about the spelling)in fact we use it on everything from coldsores to dry skin.

Demented · 27/03/2003 21:52

Oh dear, my DS2 has terrible nappy rash just now, has had a bit of a dodgy tummy and is teething, everytime I think it is going it comes back again with a vengance (usually because DH who has no sense of smell has left him in a dirty nappy), I think I will have to try this Metanium cream, I have been using Kamillosan and today invested in a packet of Camomille tea and have been making it up as a mixture for cloth wipes but perhaps it is too far gone for this!

eidsvold · 28/03/2003 07:12

demented it really really does work and as I said earlier - my dd had terrible nappy rash - it was a doctor in the hospital who told me about the metanium and about mixing it with the sudacrem to make it easier to clean.

genia · 28/03/2003 11:10

Thanks! I'm off to buy metanium and/or drapoline today!

My DS2 is just getting over a particularly bad bout of nappy rash which sounds just like your DS's, Demented. It got so bad that it was weeping the whole time and he winced everytime I touched it, poor thing. I used a warm flannel at every change and patted him dry and then left the nappy off for as long as possible. It's not that easy if they have an upset tummy and as you can imagine I've been doing a lot of washing! It seems to be getting better now even without any Metanium - which I've lost somewhere in his room and couldn't get out to buy any more as DS1 was too poorly! - and I definitely think that airing the infected area is the key.

bea · 28/03/2003 13:56

metanium for me everytime!!! for dd's bot not mine of course!!!

Demented · 28/03/2003 14:27

DS2's bottom seems much better again today, I think his tummy is better which is probably helping, I would like to think it is the chamomille tea flannels doing the trick but probably not! Lunchtime today I changed his nappy and it was the first time for days that he has not screamed the house down about it, he was actually making happy noises as I wiped the flannels over his bum. We have had the weaping, bleeding bot as well over the last fews days, it must be horrible for them, poor wee souls. Will remember Metanium for next time though!

I don't know if this is any help, but when my daugher was little she started to get nappy rash when she was about 6 months. I tried all the barrier creams and nothing worked. Then I noticed on the pampers packet something about the added lotion actually in the nappy. The lotion Pampers uses has lanolin in it. I switched to Huggies and she never had nappy rash again. As you probably know Huggies have no added lotion. Although this also meant that I could not use most wet wipes or lotions.

Just a thought....

Maudy · 28/03/2003 15:29

Pie - my DS1 used to react really badly to Pampers and so it was only ever Huggies for me too. I have been using Pampers Sensitive wipes for DS2 though, so this may be contributing to the problem. Perhaps I will change brands. Thanks for the reminder.

chiggles · 03/04/2003 15:50

Agree with Enchanted. Sudocrem for me too. (Well not me exactly!) Nappy off for as long as possible in the day, lots of kitchen towels for the wet puddles and then loads and loads of sudocrem when the nappies on. Works wonders.

Lorien · 03/04/2003 17:23

To continue extolling the virtues of sudocrem, I've found it works well on adults too -- most kinds of spots or rashes clear up in a jiffy

grommit · 03/04/2003 17:33

afew tablespoonfuls of bicarbonate of soda in bath water helped my dd's nappy rash - tip from Grandma!

Mrmum1 · 03/04/2003 18:48

Try pure zinc cream!

milch · 07/04/2003 18:58

cotton wool and water or babylotion rinsed off with water to clean the "bum 'n' bits" (ie no wipes) followed by sunshine. even if it's a cold day you can usually find a window where the sun's coming in so if you keep the babe's top half dressed the bottom half can be in sunshine (no good if the window's closed, the glass filters out the uv or something).

EmmaTMG · 07/04/2003 20:05

Yep Sudocrem and lots of it from me too.

genia · 07/04/2003 21:16

We're just back from our holidays. I bought the metanium as some had suggested and it worked REALLY well. I put it on once and the rash cleared up. I haven't had to use it since.

kamilosan (basically lanolin and chamomile cream) available from chemists and health food shops, plus regular nappy changes and lots of air free time.

Flippa · 10/04/2003 10:56

As a preventative measure after you have got rid of the rash, use zinc and castor oil cream religiously every time you change him. Nappy rash does tend to get worse when they are teething...

Maudy · 10/04/2003 13:57

My Ds2 never seems to really get over his nappy rash. I have used Sudocream and Metanium and although the latter does help it still never entirely goes away, He is at nursery now and so nappies off all day is a no go area although they have said they will chage him more often. He is teething at the moment but this has been going on for a least a month and the poor little bugger's bum is continuously red. I have changed wipes, tried using warm flannels when at home and airing it as much as possible but nothing seems to help.

Does anyone have any other advice?

Also is there a time limit on how many days you can use Metanium for or can you use it daily like Sudocream?

2BECAME4 · 09/06/2008 15:30

hi i have twin boys aged 10 months i use sudocrem every change n works for one but the older one has really bad rash to the stage where he has bleeding spots ive tried everything like johnsons, vasalene, sudocrem but nothings helping i even tried brushing the white of an egg onto it ( its ment to help it dry up) but only helped for a day so from reading this my last resort is this metanuim hopefully this will help as the poor wee soldiers really sore with it any other suggestions would be welcomed
