dropped a brick on my toe...

i managed to drop a brick (the kitchen door stop!) on my big toe this evening. there was the tiniest bit of bleeding from near the cuticle but not much at all. the bottom of the nail near the cuticle bit seems to have risen slightly, like its swollen. but hsn't popped up as such. oh....and its blue/purple.
have taken some nurofen and paracetamol, but it still feels like there is loads of pressure. a few ppl have said to heat a needle up and pop it thru the nail nd let the blood out but won't this hurt really badly??? also, won't it get infected if i make a hole in it?? will my nail grow back??

Ow, ow, ow. I nearly dropped my kitchen aid blender base on my foot at NY. I was bl**dy heavy, I moved just in time, but it cracked the floor tile!
I would go and see your GP or Practise Nurse tomorrow morning tbh, don't start poking around with needles. Have you tried icing it in the meantime?

waspriceyp · 18/01/2009 12:41

I was bldy heavy, but I meant it

charlotteolivia · 18/01/2009 12:42

well waking up this morning it is even worse pain that when i initially did it!!! throbbing!!
am worried its gonna drop off and not grow back again!! I have never shut my fingers in the door before or anything so I don't know!

Your nail will take a while to grow back. I lost both my big toe nails after a marathon charity walk. I feel your pain, sister.

Marthasmama · 18/01/2009 12:44

It depends on whether the nailbed itself is damaged. Get to the doctors and until then, ice it and keep it elevated.

scrooged · 18/01/2009 12:46

You'll need an x-ray for this as you may have broken your big toe!

It sounds soo painful. Pop to A&E and get them to have a look.

I dont think its broken, just looks very swollen but only hurts when i apply any pressure to the nail. toe bends fine without pain, just a weird bruisy feeling!! might go along anyway.....hmmmnnn
put sudocrem on it last night...didn't want to spray any sntibacterial stuff....just thinking of the stinging made my eyes water!!!

Could be a break in the last bone (distal phalangy). You'd be very lucky if you've not broken or fractured it.

IdrisTheDragon · 18/01/2009 13:31

I dropped a big dish on my toe a couple of years ago and it really really hurt. It was on my toenail and slightly under it.

It bruised my nail a lot and over the next 6 months or so the bruise moved up the nail. When it got to the top an mount of nail came off, but it was fine (just looked a bit gross for a while).

charlotteolivia · 18/01/2009 14:11

i'm probably being naive here, but am i right in thinking they can't actually do anything for a broken toe- therefore i would be wasting a & e's time?
6 months idris??

I have a black toe nail since i dropped a large metal saute pan lid on it back in may/june time.

I find painting all nails a dark burguney (SP) colour helps to hide it.

northwest1 · 18/01/2009 14:43

If there is a fracture through the joint and a bit has broken off, then they may want to pin the joint back together.

scrooged · 18/01/2009 15:27

It depends on how it's broken, as northwest says.

Are you OK?

charlotteolivia · 18/01/2009 15:38

hey yea, just been tidying!
i had it propped up on a pillow last night and it has been alright today. walking wise it is loads better, it just hurts when something touches the nail. but the underside of the toe is fine. thanyou everyone for your advice!!
think i shall be taking a trip to the gp tomorrow. see what they say about xray.

went to the GP this morning and he said it didn't seem like it was broken, had a needle put through the surface to let the blood underneath seep out- and now, it feels perfect, like nothing has happened to it!! it was just the pressure i think!!

scrooged · 19/01/2009 17:16

Ahh. Another GP with X-ray vision. I'll be out of a job soon.

northwest1 · 19/01/2009 18:32

If the toe feels like nothing has happened then it's unlikely to be broken. Xrays can be harmful so you need a good reason to do one.

scrooged · 19/01/2009 19:23

They are not that harmful, a dosage for a toe is about the same as you would get going on an aeroplane from London to Paris, if not less.

northwest1 · 19/01/2009 22:11

You're right! I looked it up. Additional lifetime risk of cancer less than one in a million. Well I never.

scrooged · 19/01/2009 22:14
Smile
charlotteolivia · 20/01/2009 00:01

well, i'm glad that i'm not going to get cancer from THAT xray I never had....!
Although actually northwest1 I have broken my scaphoid bone in my wrist before, and left it because it didn't swell and just thought it was a mild sprain, so you CAN break a bone without realising.
No, in all honesty, i know it is better to be safe than sorry, but it is fine now. GP said that if the swelling hadnt gone down etc he would send for an xray. just feels a bit like a regular bruise. A couple hours after it had been pierced, and the fluid had drained, the toe had gone back to its normal size, im not walking with a limp and it no longer hurts. was just the pressure of the blood build up. just got to make sure i keep it clean now!!
