Help - I have itchy eyelids, is there anything I can do before I scratch my eyes out?

I have a very unattractive red eyeliner effect on my top eyelid

Combined with a rather horrid snowflake/bad dandruff/dry skin look

All in all I look fairly nasty

Never mind the itching & the pain

Is there anything I can buy over the counter or a natural remedy that will fix it?

try bathing them with cooled boiled water - make sure it's cool first.

poor you. is it eczema?

Doodle2U · 10/01/2009 13:04

Could you use an eye bath & wash to calm it down (bought over the counter)?

belgo · 10/01/2009 13:06

vaseline

KatyMac · 10/01/2009 13:12

I have been bathing them

It looks like eczema although I don't have eczema iyswim

I'll send DH out for an eyebath, that is a good idea

I hadn't thought of vaseline, I might have a go with that too - I have been using aqueous cream but it is getting worse not better

Have you bought the lurg back from Eygpt KM? Maybe you have the dreaded 'Camel's Eye'!

KatyMac · 10/01/2009 13:19

Gee thanks.......you are joking aren't you?

are your eyes themselves ok? could it be blepheritis? you could try some moisturising drops for them too.

midnightexpress · 10/01/2009 13:20

I've had this recently and it's proving v difficult to get rid of. Doc has told me it's contact dermatitis and I have v weak hydrocortisone cream to put on twice a day. She recommended using vaseline on top of the cream at night, and also prescribed me a completely hypoallergenic moisturiser to use in the daytime. It does clear it up, but then as soon as I stop using the cream it comes back. But there is a new kind of cream which is to be her next attack if this doesn't work, apparently, so might be worth speaking to your doctor.

She told me it's probably an allergic reaction to something, but v difficult to say what that might be.

HTH.

'course I am!

If I had more time, I may have led you a merry dance and done a bit of a wind up with you but sadly, I have to go and be a mother for a bit!

Hope it feels better soon!

meep · 10/01/2009 13:25

I have suffered from itchy eyelis for years - also used aqueous cream and it made it worse.

One gp told me to use 0.5% steroid cream - another said never to put it on your eyelide but it tends to be the best for stopping a flare up.

Avoid ALL makeup on your eyes for a while (total nightmare I know) - and use something like Aveeno cream (you can buy it in big Boots stores). I put moisturiser on every morning - throughout the day and layer it on all evening while I'm watching tv - don't rub too hard at your eyes and don't scratch!

Poor you - it is horrible.

chopchopbusybusy · 10/01/2009 13:25

I have this at the moment too. Never had it before and no idea what it is. I've been using 'simple eye ointment' which you can by at a pharmacy. It's a bit similar to vaseline, but not quite so heavy.

meep · 10/01/2009 13:27

oh - and try to avoid getting shampoo/conditioner in your eyes in the shower - or switch to some type of hypo-allergenic brand - avoid spray deoderants - and just wash your face with water - no nice face creams on your eyes either. I had to bin a tub of creme de la mer eye cream because it stung so badly

KatyMac · 10/01/2009 13:40

Don't wear eyemakeup at all or facecreams

I'll look out for Aveeno

Actually an allergy makes sense I do get contact allergies

Get some Diprobase cream from the pharmacist and smother it on. So soothing. I use it on my eyelids. My doc says it is eczema.
The cream chopchop mentions could be epaderm. My doc prescribed that for me. It made it worse initially but has helped now.

NoNickname · 10/01/2009 13:58

I second the Diprobase suggestion. I often get itchy eyelids after a period of wearing lots of make-up for a few days (and not taking it off before bed too - naughty!) Diprobase seems to sooth it and it the redness and itching goes quite quickly for me.

midnightexpress · 10/01/2009 14:14

Diprobase cream was the one my doc prescribed for me too katyMac.

I developed sore eyes just before Christmas and went to Doctors she gave me Optrex Chloramphenicol for conjunctivitis, 1 week later no better, I went back she gave me Fucidic Acid, 1 week later no better so we went back to Optrex. I have just been to Optician because I was so worried about how my eyes prick all through the night and are sore, he said I have Blepharitis, I have researched it and it said there is no cure, I am gutted as I look hideous, he said I have to bath my lashes with Johnsons Baby Shampoo and water, which I am doing as anyone else got this and will I ever look normal again?

kylieone · 10/01/2009 14:38

I forgot to add I am having problems with night sweats and hot flushes and just had a blood test to confirm the menopause which I have found out can also cause dry eyes which cause Blepharitis, GREAT I AM COMING BACK AS A MAN, they say "why we have to shave", well with the menopause it looks like I may have to shave my hairy face also, GOD I WISH I WAS A MAN

KatyMac · 10/01/2009 18:02

Grrrrr it is getting worse

Do you think Aloe Vera would work?

OP posts:
wotulookinat · 10/01/2009 19:56

I wouldn't put aloe on it. What about something cooling? I keep some getl eye pads in the fridge for when it's really bad, but a cool flannel might work.

KatyMac · 10/01/2009 20:10

Oops already did & actually it feels lovely

OP posts:
wotulookinat · 10/01/2009 20:29

Oh - maybe I'll try it too then. Was it gel or straight from the plant?

KatyMac · 10/01/2009 20:33

Gelly from 'Forever'

I am very impressed

OP posts:
thatoldchestnut · 10/01/2009 21:05

Agree sounds like blepharitis.Use cooled boiled water with a few drops of baby shampoo and a cotton bud to clean along the lash margins. If you think you have dry eyes also - symptoms often gritty eyes common alongside blepharitis - could buy hypromellose eye drops also.

I would get an eye test rather than just see GP as they have more equipment to examine the eye.The optometrist can have a good look under a slit lamp microscope and let you know if this is the problem and refer you on if needed.

KatyMac · 10/01/2009 21:11

Ker-ching

I am about to see my GP about possible blood sugar/diabetes problems

Only that seems t be about the eyes themselves being dry, mine seems to be definitely the skin of my eyelid and bit by my nose and those unattractive red sweeps somewhat like cleopatra's eyeliner
