but proud moment.... went to a pub thursday and didnt have one - despite my boss saying " oh go on lise, i wont tell your hubby" gosh i was tempted

ScummyMummy · 12/04/2003 09:16

Wow- you are a superstar custardo. I'm really really really not confident that I could resist if someone was doing that!

Charliecat- sob! You mean we have to be fat, spotty and virtuous for the sake of our brats? Can it possibly be worth it?!

Sabbath · 19/04/2003 18:27

On day 3 of giving up, it does consume my head for most of the day, but my best friend is giving me lodes of support which is great as she has gone through it too. And I can't wait to be at the same point she is at. I am finding it hard to imagine my life without the fags, i have this empty feeling inside that i cannot fill. Anyway hope everyone else is doing well.

ScummyMummy · 19/04/2003 19:47

Many congrats Sabbath- hang in there.

It's definitely getting a little easier as time goes on. But still don't quite like the thought of never, ever smoking another fag ever again, so am sticking to the "I will not smoke TODAY" approach. Survived smoke-free getting extremely enebriated with some lovely friends last weekend, which must be a good sign, as I used to chain smoke with a vengeance on such occasions.

Still spotty though and fear I'm putting on weight - exercise may have to be done at this rate- what a vile thought. I did try and do a sit up today and it wasn't very successful...

charliecat · 19/04/2003 22:19

Well done everyone! Has anyone else noticed people outside macdonalds etc standing outside getting a dose of nicotine? I do feel pity and should rename myself as Mrs Carr! I feel theres more successes here than on other threads? I appreciate having a clean mouth and clear wind pipes etc. What do you like about being a non smoker? Must add another WELL DONE EVERYONE!

mammya · 28/04/2003 21:44

Hello everyone, how are you all coping without the evil weed? I want to give up smoking too so I thought I'd join you.

Tortington · 29/04/2003 12:22

go for it mammya.

am doing fine i hold my head high as i ask "no smoking section please!"

i seriously smell smoke on other people now

its fab i have become a non smoking snob of the highest order and look down my noses at smokers!

lets face it i dont get chance to look down my nose often!

so do it, dont fif faf around look at your clock and make a definate time like say 6pm then on the dot, throw away fags, ashtrays, and anything associated. get yourself down the chemist buys ome patches ( i have shitloads i didnt use! got them on prescription)
and call yourself a non smoker and join with us the "elite"

mammya · 29/04/2003 15:23

Yes I will. I've set a date but hadn't thought of setting a time. I'll do that too.

Has anyone tried the gums? I tried them years ago but found them too yuk to persevere. Have they improved?

charliecat · 10/05/2003 23:37

I think the gum is still disgusting, but at least you know youve had a dose of nicotine....that taste...ergh! Patches are excellent if you really want to stop. They take the madness away.

OP posts:
spacemonkey · 10/05/2003 23:51

dp gave up smoking earlier this week (with patches) and i've found it hard, i cannot smoke in the house at all now (even though he says it's ok if i do), it just wouldn't be fair. I'm dead proud of him, but have been tormenting myself all week, feeling I should give up too. I sat and smoked my last fag and actually CRIED at the thought of not smoking again - it was like being forced to leave a lover. Weird I know, but I've been smoking for 20 years. I want to give up, but more than that I want to want to give up if you know what I mean. For years I've been saying I'll give up when my attitude's right - pure procrastination. I think I'll get hold of an Allen Carr book as he seems so highly recommended. And some patches!

ScummyMummy · 11/05/2003 00:24

Oh- know the feeling, spacemonkey. I still find the thought of not smoking ever ever again an unattractive one, yet I haven't had so much as a puff for ages and ages- I think it's 11 or 12 weeks. It's definitely getting better- not permanently gagging for one any more- but there are still times when the temptation is HUGE. And I know just how nice it'd taste as the longer you leave it the greater the rush. Also I fundamentally dislike the idea of being so very very good all the time!
But I am proud of myself for getting this far and really don't want to go back to constant smoking so have been able to (just!) resist the very tempting odd one with friends thus far because I know that it would lead to full time smoking after a while. The patches did help- there's so much will power work to be done and you can't concentrate on that unless the edge is taken off your physical craving at first, I found. Good luck with it, Spacemonkey.

doormat · 11/05/2003 09:45

Mammya, the gum has improved a lot. Let us know the date you want to give up and I will do it with you as I need the support.

I tried to give up 3 months ago. I lasted 5 days on the gum but dp kicked up coz he hadn't had one neither so I whinged like a baby for one.Boooohoo

charliecat · 11/05/2003 13:18

I cryed before i pressed play on the Allen Carr video...it was like saying farewell to some loved one......oh the madness! My mum who stopped at the same time as me, about 8 weeks ago, had a fag today while we were having a boot sale ( the habit of standing round smoking i suppose) and she couldnt see straight, it nearly choked her but she still puffed away on it. I felt pity!!!!

OP posts:
mammya · 11/05/2003 17:17

Doormat, I have given up! It's my 4th day without fags and it's getting better, I'm no longer thinking about it all the time. I wasn't even tempted when I went out last night. It helps that I'm patched though... I've also started to read the Allen Carr book. I find his style very annoying but will try very hard to finish it.

doormat · 11/05/2003 18:47

Mammya congratulations and keep it up. If anyone else out there wants to give up let me know the date and I will give up with them.

Bobbins · 12/05/2003 11:42

OK. I've decided to buy the Allen Carr stuff. But there are loads of different Carr books and videos, CD's on Amazon. Which should I get?

WideWebWitch · 12/05/2003 11:53

Bobbins, I'd recommend the book The Easy Way to Stop Smoking since he is very irritating (although very good and worth it IMO) and I can manage to read him but I don't think I could bear to watch or listen to him! Good luck to you and everyone else out there, it really does get easier the longer you've stopped.

Bobbins · 12/05/2003 12:04

Everyone seems to say his approach works well but what does his approach actually entail?

whymummy · 12/05/2003 12:13

i do doormat sept 2004 when my dd is at full time school

WideWebWitch · 12/05/2003 12:14

Smoking until you finish the book for one thing, not lecturing you about the health risks for another and changing your mindset and the way you think about fags for another. It worked for me anyway!

charliecat · 12/05/2003 20:02

For Bobbins...The Allen Carr video tells you of the health risks, it also says things like "when you had your first fag you didnt want to smoke for the rest of your life did you?" and you think...no i didnt, good point! He explains that the voices will happen, the "you need to smoke" ones, but that if you did have a fag it would just start you off again because really the nicotine is that addictive. He mentions goverment conspiracy, why they would like us to smoke, the cover ups by the tobbaco companys regarding health and whats actully in the fags and his irritating but honest voice just gets in your head and you can then fight the voices with his logic.
I rented my copy from the library for £1 and since i havent had a fag since it really was the best quid i ever spent! I think really he just explains why we smoke and why we dont have to anymore..something like that anyway!!
It certainly isnt going to harm anyone by watching it, i cant comment on the books ect maybe someone else can...Hope that Helps!

mammya · 15/05/2003 23:35

Hey, how is everyone doing? Are you all giver-ups still non-smokers? Have you relapsed or are you doing so well you don't need to talk about it anymore???
I've just completed my first week as a non-smoker, yeepee! A pat on the back for me! And dd's now potty trained, pats on backs all round! All in all a good week!

charliecat · 16/05/2003 10:46

Well Done Mammya!!!!!!! and with the potty training.....you are brave tackling two such big things at once!!! I am still a commited non-smoker, who was disgusted to hear on the news this morning that passive smoking isnt that bad..yeah right...
I still fancy a fag now and then, but just dont have one, how are you bearing up yourself, is it hellish or are you enjoying the challenge? Keep your strenght up, hope to see an update soon x
