This Flu/Flu Bug doing the rounds....how long does it last and what are the chances of me picking it up?

both kids, both +40C temps for 2 days, up virtually the whole night last night and the night before cooling down stupidly high temperatures in both of them...

what I'm wondering is how much longer have they got to go?

and have you picked it up from your children ?

wash hands frequently

BlueBumedFly · 03/01/2009 18:06

.... sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings but a few posts have been going on this one. Xmas night/Boxing day a few of us had LOs with 40+ temps for a few days, my DD is better today (9 days in total) but still has the cough and snot.

It is hideous, I am shattered.

foxinsocks · 03/01/2009 18:09

omg

yes, it's the same thing

the cough is awful isn't it

I can't get enough nurofen down them because of the 3 doses in 24 hours!

nurofen is the only thing stopping their temperatures being ridiculous but unfortunately it is wearing off after around 4 hours and Calpol does nothing for either of them

sigh at how long it might last

mine are a bit older (7 and 8) so I'm really hoping they might get over it a bit quicker.

No wonder you are shattered BB, you poor thing!

OP posts:
BlueBumedFly · 03/01/2009 18:16

If you read the small print very carefully on the Nurofen bottle it does say you can give nurofen more often, especially in bigger children I think if required. Perhaps call NHS direct for info on dosing?

It is truly hideous. DD is just 20 months and she was coughing herself sick in the end. We were up in the night endlessly with water and meds.

I feel for you, I really really do.

xx

yes that's a good idea BB (calling NHS direct about the dosing). Rather that than a seizure from a ridiculous temperature. Your poor dd and at 20 months, they are still at the age where they don't really understand what's going on .

Glad you haven't got it yet herbie (touches wood). Interesting that it has affected older children too isn't it. Quite often they avoid these things or don't get them for so long.

Looks like we are in it for the long haul then. Arrrghh.

BlueBumedFly · 03/01/2009 18:35

DD's ears also both infected and her throat too, we have just finished two courses of ABs which she hates, screams, coughs, spits up.... ho hum, back to work on Monday.

CorrieDale · 03/01/2009 18:36

a week of feeling terrible. Though the very high temp didn't last more than a few days. The cough and snot seems infinite. I did catch it simulataneously with DS. Wash your hands lots! Buy boxes of tissues and don't reuse themn!

foxinsocks · 03/01/2009 18:41

lol BBF. Yes, I am back to work on Monday too. Perfect timing really. I look like shit, have had no sleep for days and no doubt, will pick this up by Wednesday lol.
Much love to your dd, sounds too hideous.

I have just sneezed grrr. Corrie, did you get a high temp too?

foxinsocks · 03/01/2009 19:41

thanks for all the info everyone . How amazing that it did the rounds so at the school herbie!

I used to be locked into what was going round school when I was a SAHM but now I'm a WOHM, I have no idea about what bugs are going round and how long they last!

Dd had a party today and ds had football and when I phoned to cancel both, the parents did not sound surprised at all and said a lot had been going round .

BlueBumedFly · 03/01/2009 19:43

...I have just opened the chocolate and the wine... just to keep you company mind, would never have indulged normally

ThePellyandMe · 03/01/2009 19:49

DS1 got it the day after finishing school, DS2 and me a day later (weekend before christmas).

The boys had nightmare temperatures for a few days but were a bit better by christmas day. They are still suffering from tiredness now though.

I was worse I think, really high temp for 4 days, awful cough, no energy. Finally went to the Gp the day before New Years Eve and I'm on anti-biotics for chest infection which have worked wonders actually. Had it last bloody christmas aswell.

I'm still congested and with cough and Ds1 is still snotty.

Good luck, its not nice.

aandme · 03/01/2009 19:54

I am here in agony, the cough is so painful never had anything like it before. This is my 5th day boo hoo. DS not got it

foxinsocks · 03/01/2009 21:25

oh no, I hope you all and your families get better soon.

Yes, the description of the cough sounds very familiar. Dd is definitely in pain when she coughs. Oh what a horrid horrid bug!

OP posts:
Elibean · 03/01/2009 22:28

dd1 had it (six days and nights of high temps, and cough that lasted a week after that). I had it mildly (painful cough, 2 days of moderate temps) but I was vaccinated against the flu....as were dh and dd2, and neither of them caught it.

So either it was 'real' flu, or its not as catching as we thought...

I think there's more than one cough/temp bug around though, because my 80 yr old mother visited en route to her mother's just before Xmas, and got stuck here with temps and a cough for five days. Unpleasant, but not what I'd call real flu...temps weren't high enough, and she wasn't ill enough. Though she thinks her French homeopathic flu vaccine meds might have played a part.

Who knows...but I hope you and all your families recover soon, or don't catch it!

BlueBumedFly · 03/01/2009 22:36

HIJACK
Hi Elibean - sorry to hear your whole family were suffereing, how old is your grandmother? You must be from wonderfully strong stock!

Ended hijack

fox - try the strawberry creams, sweet and sugary but you may just need the sugar to fight the temperature.

Evil nasty bugly.

Elibean · 04/01/2009 10:29

102 in May

Which is the only excuse I have (apart from having tried hard for years) for having had my kids in my 40s

How is everyone today?

Elibean · 04/01/2009 10:30

And Fox, we ate tons of chocolate, and only 1/4 had the flu full-on.....think you are doing vital scientific research there...

BlueBumedFly · 04/01/2009 13:22

I was up again all night, ahhhhh, when will thus bug end??? Zzzzzzzzz

foxinsocks · 06/01/2009 20:06

Hi Elibean

poor you BBF

so the flu update....

+40C temps in both of them from Thursday till Sunday. Both in their pyjamas the whole time and we did not leave the house in that time.

ds got DREADFUL droopy eyes, huge circles and he insisted they were dreadfully painful (which had me on meningitis watch all the time!). He also got very very sore ears. He is still snotty and has the cough.

dd appeared to escape the worst of it but still has the cough (no sore ears but she had a sore throat).

Both ok-ish on Monday and now they are just knackered but fine, no more temperatures (phew!). I haven't got it yet (touch wood) but I don't think I'm out of the woods.

On the otherhand, my consumption of chocolate during their flu outbreak and over Christmas has meant I have put on 3kg arrghh!

OP posts:
BlueBumedFly · 06/01/2009 22:18

Fox - That all sounds like a complete nightmare. Poor kids and poor you! Funny you should mention the soreness, my DD could not tolerate you taking off t-shirts etc as I think her face and neck hurt. My Mum managed to catch it from her and she said she felt like she had mumps her neck and face were so sore.

I joined you in the gaining of 3kgs but lets face it, the only thing that helps in some small way is the chocolate. Better keep eating it in case it is the only thing keeping the bugs away!!

Hope you DCs start to feel much better soon.

Dh and i have had it, the dd's had it for a few days, i think because they have already had it twice in the last few months they are more imune. I am suffering from the cough, soar throat and bloked nose, dh went back to work today but is still feeling bad. I have been ill since the week before christmas, started with a stomache bug and now this . I would rather have the cold/flu than the stomache bug though.

I lost almost a stone over christmas but seem to be putting it back on now.

Hope you all feel better soon.
