Okay, have had pain in my right side for 4 days. Should I go to GP?

It feels very sore if I touch it - it's just at the bottom of the ribcage, nothing visible, just something inside hurts a lot.

In the day it isn't really noticeable unless I touch it or a twings if I lift ds2 awkwardly or bend/twist etc.

At night it hurts when I lie on that side, not really if I lie on my back, or the other side - but I am passing ds2 back and forth over me when he feeds, which does hurt. In fact any movement lying down seems to hurt.

Has anyone had this? I think it must be either muscular or else is possibly something like my liver or whatever is there?

Could it be a kidney if the other side is Ok?

I can't find anything about why my liver would hurt. Apparently that only happens if you are severely ill with hepatitis or something, and I don't drink and have had various blood tests recently which didn't flag up anything like that. Only thing that cameup was low white cells, I thought that was vecause I had a cold at the time.

Thanks for any thoughts.

It also hurts when I cough which thankfully is getting less now - had flu recently with awful cough. I am not sure if this could have caused a muscle strain, or if it did, would it last this long?

I have a feeling that gallbladder pain is felt under the rib cage. I'll have a look and see if I can find anything.

Found this on netdoctor:

What are the symptoms of gallstones?

Not all gallstones cause symptoms and those detected during a scan performed for other reasons do not usually require treatment. This, however, should be discussed with your doctor.

Symptoms can be extremely variable, but usually present in one of three ways.

Chronic cholecystitis (biliary colic)

This is a long-term inflammation of the gall bladder and causes:

sporadic pains in the middle of the upper abdomen, or just below the ribs on the right side

pain which becomes worse over an hour and then stays the same

pain that may spread to the right shoulder or between the shoulder blades

pain that can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting and sometimes excessive wind.

An attack can last from a few minutes to two to three hours before getting better.

The frequency and severity of attacks is very variable.

Attacks can be triggered by eating fatty foods such as chocolate, cheese or pastry.

It can be difficult to distinguish the pain from other diseases such as gastric ulcer, back problems, heart pains, pneumonia and kidney stones.

Here is the whole link

morning i dont think gall stones hurt to touch. i have had them and spoken to lots of others who have had them, its more like a pcomstant pain inside weather you touch it or not.

could you have strained a muscle or something liek that?

Flihgtattendant · 02/01/2009 07:35

Thankyou very much littlefish, how kind of you.

I'm not sure if it fits completely.

This pain is constant, if provoked - so not like an attack, or worsening with a meal or anything - it's there all the time, it just is felt more if I am in a certain position iyswim?

There's no pain at all towards the middle of the abdomen or shoulder etc, just by the bottom rib at the side.

I don't think I have any other symptoms at all, really - not any nausea or anything.
Although it does say symptoms can be very variable so it is something I won't rule out.

Thanks for finding that link for me

Lizandlulu, thanks for your experience. I have been thinking strained muscle but unsure how long that would last? It's possible as I do lift ds2 a lot, but don't remember doing anything specific that made me go 'ouch'. Unless i did it while coughing last week?

It started around Monday I think. I don't know if it ought to be going by now?

OP posts:
Flihgtattendant · 02/01/2009 07:38

Also I don't feel it when I am up and about, unless I cough, or poke it with my finger, or stretch up to reach something for instance?

go to the gp get them to have a look, although i had gall stones and my gp said it was indesgestion, for a year! but at least they will be albe to tell you how long a muscle injury should last for so if its there longer they can look for other things.

Flihgtattendant · 02/01/2009 07:41

Yes I think I will go on Monday if it's not better.
At least ds will be back at school and I'll have more time and not have to entertain him at the Drs!

Thanks again. Indigestion for a year! blimey Poor you.

lizandlulu · 02/01/2009 08:43

i kwpt going back to my gp cause i was worried it wasnt indegestion as there was mothing i could pin point it to, nothing triggered it off, it just came and went, sometimes i was in so much pain i couldnt move.

it eventually turned into pancreatitis on new years day 2 years ago!

LucyEllensmummy · 02/01/2009 09:32

It could be gallstones, the symptoms are incredibly variable and more prominent when lying down. Moving around will alleiviate it too. They can hurt when touched, but you have to really poke! The pain can be constant too, usually if there is inflammation due to infection, although this is usually severe pain (i was hospitalised three times while waiting to get mine out).

Flihgtattendant · 02/01/2009 10:29

Thanks...LucyEllensMummy, can I ask where it actually hurt? Was it like in the middle of your abdomen or more at the edge? Mine is right on the 'corner' as it were, is very sensitive - you don't have to poke it hard, just touch it really.
But will bear in mind it might be something else other than muscular pain.

What causes gallstones? Is it random bad luck?

OP posts:
LucyEllensmummy · 02/01/2009 11:03

pretty much randomness although there tends to be a genetic link. A high fat diet and pregnancy can make it worse.

My pain, when it was acute was all around, but it did start with a slight pain under the ribs. The problem is, if you poke around, you make it sensitive. It could be muscular though as a doctor said to me once that the sort of pain that you can point to, tends to be muscular and not internal.

Get it checked, The doctor can do a pretty indicative test in the surgery - basically will push up under your ribs whilst asking you to breathe in, if you go through the ceiling when he does this, its pretty sure you have GS!! There are blood tests too and ultrasound. Mine festered for year just giving me trouble, but after DD was born, i had it big time and i have NEVER has such pain in my life!

Flihgtattendant · 02/01/2009 11:29

Thankyou so much for the info.

It is definitely pointable at, but I know if someone pushed it hard I would scream!

I don't eat very healthily and have had two pregnancies.

However this morning I realised, whilst walking round a shop with ds on one hip, that I often do this while pushing buggy with other hand - and that in itself could have caused some damage I think, as he is 18mo now. (just doesn't like being in the buggy!)

So I'll definitely go to Drs next week if it isn't better. I would be happier if GS was ruled out before it got any worse.

Thanks again for all your help x

my pain was in the middle of my chest, in between my boobs, it can be so ramdom!

Gunnerbean · 03/01/2009 00:30

Gallstones can often lead to a range of symptoms in different people.

The symptoms you describe are very similar to my gallstones.

You can get attacks which can vary in severity - even in the same person - and can change as time goes on. I've had mine off and on for about 20 years but plan to get it whipped out soon!

lizandlulu · 03/01/2009 08:35

20 years get it out woman

Flightattendant7 · 03/01/2009 08:39

Gahh. I have started another thread this morning as was in so much pain.

Gunner - was your pain constant, or did it come and go? Mine feels much worse today. It feels like I have broken a rib or something.

It's the kind of pain where I can hardly walk or anything without wincing in agony.

Mind you if you can have gallstones for 20 years I guess it isnt going to kill me if it is that...OOH Dr said it sounded muscular though.

LucyEllensmummy · 03/01/2009 09:35

Gallstones are not life threatening, they can cause some serious complications if a stone gets into, and blocks the bile duct, but this is RARE, and you would be a lovely shade of orange if it did.

Flightattendant7 · 03/01/2009 09:36

Oh that is just my fake tan

lizandlulu · 03/01/2009 14:16

one of mine got stuck into my pancreas with make me go yellow. the doc said if i had left it any longer before going to hospital then i could have died the blockage was forcing all the crap in my blood, back into my blood or something like that.

dh said i looked a right state, red eye whites fron straining from being sick and yellow skin

lizandlulu · 03/01/2009 14:17

flight, do you have an appointment for the gp?

Paperchase · 03/01/2009 14:20

Might it be a hernia?

There is also a condition involving inflammed ribs, that I can't quite remember, but it was thought I had it once.

Sorry, that's craptacularly unhelpful, isn't it?

How soon can you see a GP?

Flightattendant7 · 03/01/2009 15:03

Oh lizandlulu, how horrific - I'm sorry for joking about it

I'm glad you survived to tell the tale.

Paperchase - thanks, good word to nick from you there, I'll use that a lot in future!! I don't think it's a hernia as it's a bit high up and nothing poking through, as it were - also nowhere near digestive area. I do have a tiny bit of separation where my bellybutton is since pregnancy but no pain anywhere near that.

I'll try and get an appt on Monday. Dreading tonight more than anything as ds unlikely to sleep very well. I nearly fell asleep just now on the sofa, but had to stop myself as the boys are not trustworthy!!

My parents will be back home soon and i'll ring them and let them know situation in case they're needed, but hoping it'll just calm down gradually if I keep resting.

I went driving yesterday and carried ds2 round a shop on my hip, not a good idea, as both things seem to have exacerbated it I think.

I despair of getting much rest but will certainly try. Have now spoken to three separate HCP's who have said it's muscular, from what I describe, so fingers crossed that's all it is.

I really appreciate you all caring btw, felt very alone earlier and a bit scared. It really helps knowing you're around, though I will get proper help if things look dodgy so don't fret xx

Flightattendant7 · 03/01/2009 15:05

I think that's costochondritis from what I can google? Commoner in pregnancy I think, but when I was pg I did used to sit up sometimes and feel like my rib 'caught' on something, and i had to quickly get back down and unhook it as it were, then try again. That has happened occasionally since then. Maybe one is a bit wobbly or something, it's the same side.
