IBS Relief?

Zebraa · 01/12/2008 17:06

I suffer really bad bouts of IBS. Typical symptoms are period type pain, trapped wind, bloating and sometimes a pain up my bum type feeling.

Can anyone recommend any miracle cure because it's unbearable at the minute!

I had awful, awful, awful IBS for several years (and was hospitalised twice with it). I started taking Aloe Vera Gel every morning, mixed with apple juice. After 3 weeks, my symptoms just went away!

They come back very infrequently now if I'm stressed, or eat curry . I simply go back on the aloe vera for a few days and they subside again.

Have you cut out wheat?

My ibs has eased enormously since i stopped having wheat.

littlelamb · 01/12/2008 17:18

Try drinking peppermint tea. I had a terrible bout of IBS when I was writing my dissertation and this really helped. THankfully I haven't had a bad attack since, but god it was so painful I had my partner looking after me because I was in agony

noonki · 01/12/2008 17:27

no wheat for me

I go gluten free when having a bad bout, and try not to overdo wheat in general although I can eat it in reasonable amounts. I was also part of a trial for hypnotherapy to relieve IBS (I felt there was nothing to lose and things were really bad at that point in time) and I have only had two bad bouts in 6 years. Granted, it's not suitable for everybody and you would need to find a hypnotherapist trained for this.

mamakoukla · 03/12/2008 02:52

My pain was sometimes so bad I would pass out, happened twice in public I could bloat by 2-3 dress sizes in the matter of hours.

For me, it was drinking lots of water and cutting out dairy and caffeine. It takes a while to find your own riggers ime, probably because there can be more than one.

I still find if I don't drink enough the same old tummy ache/trapped wind comes back but thankfully a couple of large glasses of water and it goes. Peppermint oil capsules helped at its worst (taken 1 hour before eating) but I don't bother now.

I have cut out cheese and this has helped a lot.

I also have peppermint oil capsules for bad stomach aches and these do help alot.

Iworryalot · 30/03/2009 17:57

just trying to revive this thread , iv been diagnosed ibs last year , thinking of trying gluten free bread any other suggestions ?

PringlePopper · 30/03/2009 18:28

I have found these to be of help

www.simplysupplements.net/search.php?keyword=bowel+care&go.x=0&go.y=0&go=Go

I also find that a gluten free diet does help a great deal. HTH

PringlePopper · 30/03/2009 18:29

PS going dairy free for a while helps things to settle for me too.

cornsilk · 30/03/2009 18:30

Littlefish - the aloe vera gel that you recommended has really helped me - thanks so much!

cornsilk · 30/03/2009 18:31

I've also cut out bread (on a diet) which may have helped also.

Iworryalot · 30/03/2009 18:41

Thanks people . im at my wits end at times , bloating , wind , Mushy loose BM
i dread going to the loo ....

giantkatestacks · 30/03/2009 18:46

Iworryalot - I was on a wheatfree diet before I was properly diagnosed and came off insoluble fibre and it wasnt that hard to do - I just swapped pasta for rice and didnt eat that much bread anyway - the gluten free bread is pretty much disgusting unless you make it yourself btw.

It does help if you're a person who is used to eating a nonprocessed diet though - its in so much processed food.

oh and rice crispies for breakfast...

Iworryalot · 30/03/2009 18:54

I had some gluten free bread yesterday and today , as i do eat quite a lot of bread thought this was a good place to start , this mornings BM wasnt to bad could just be a coincidence ...and i do eat rice about twice a week is rice ok ? iv heard soluble fibre is good helps bulk BM a bit i think ?
is rice better that oats , thanks for help

giantkatestacks · 30/03/2009 19:27

It depends on your diagnosis - I'm on basically an ibs diet and am not allowed very much fibre at all - other people can be completely the opposite. Sorry thats not very helpful.

I can tell you what I'm not allowed to eat but you may be the opposite so: peas, sweetcorn, any whole wheat products at all, beans, pulses, lentils etc, nuts, seeds, spinach, caffeine, alcohol, oranges, fruit with seems in ie strawbs, bananas. Things I'm allowed occasionally: broccolli, cauliflower, green beans, other legumes. Things I'm allowed a lot of: white flour products, tomatoes (not skin though), other veg, all dairy, all meat, cheese...

Have you got a dietician?

Iworryalot · 30/03/2009 19:42

Hi yes saw one last year ,just suggested to carry on as am ... my specialist said if i wanted to elliminate certain foods to try if makes any difference ..ie wheat one week , dairy another ,eggs another ect not all together .

I am at a loss at times so just eat what i fancy which isnt good i know ... so at moment trying to help myself by trying the gluten free way ... not to strict just maybe bread and rice instead of pasta ..
may i ask what your symptoms are ,or have been ..
im just so sick of having odd BM specialist says that that is normal for me now and the more im worrying the worse it will become ..

Iworryalot · 30/03/2009 19:46

IV chosen gluten free as research has indicated that gluten could be a contribute towards IBS and changing diet a litle could help a lot ...worth a go i thought .

giantkatestacks · 30/03/2009 19:59

I'm a bit different as though I'm on an IBS diet its for a physical thing - adhesions after bowel surgery so if I eat fibrous foods I get terrible pain and bloating etc.

It helps to eat smaller meals as well and eat at the same times - eating randomly makes things much worse I think.
