It is driving me mad, been for about 2 days now, what the hell could be causing it.

My dd was a thumb sucker so consequently had thread worms alot
The pripsen that the gp prescribed is disgusting....sorry had to emphasise... it really is that bad.
I used Boots own treatment. It's cheaper than ovex. I swallowed whole but they are chewable which is ok if dcs are too little to take tablets. We are a family of five so they aren't cheap as their family pack only has 4 tablets in it so I had to buy two. Of course if you can get your gp to prescribe they will be free for dcs but, as I said, my gp prescribed pripsen which is yuk, yuk, yuk. (did I already mention that?!!!!)

iheartdusty · 19/11/2008 17:21

change beds and wash pjs every day for a week - the worms make a mad dash to lay their last eggs when you take the medicine (sorry) and the eggs can survive for a while outside the body.

also get DCs to wear pants under their pjs (harder to scratch and hence to transfer eggs to mouth again) and wash their bottoms (and yours) FIRST THING when you get out of bed - for about a week.

If you can't see worm in your poo you can do a visual check if you bend over in front of a mirror and look between your legs at your bum...(or so my friend told me )

solo · 19/11/2008 17:32

Pripsen comes in tablet form and you don't have to chew them, just swallow. They go really quickly. Cost about £6 for a family pack.

FarTMISorry · 19/11/2008 17:33

will get some tommorow, dd's say they dont have itchy bottoms. Just me then

BecauseImWorthIt · 19/11/2008 17:36

If no-one else has it, then it could be piles or it could be thrush.

Why don't you try applying some Canesten to the itchy area and taking a Diflucan tablet (actually, buy Boots own as it's much cheaper). You only need one tablet and it should work within 24 hours. So you will know quickly if that's the problem!

solo · 19/11/2008 17:40

Pripsen is far cheaper to buy than Diflocan. If it's worms, it'll be sorted in a day(the itch), but if it's thrush, it'll take a few days IME. I'd try the worming tabs first. My Dc's didn't have the itch either(just me), but I treated Ds anyway. Dd was still bf and didn't have them.

FarTMISorry · 19/11/2008 17:47

Ok cant believe I have just done this, let alone am going to share, there is nothing moving in any way shape of form in my movements.

OP posts:
BecauseImWorthIt · 19/11/2008 17:50

Treat for thrush then. If that fails, probably piles!

solo · 19/11/2008 17:51

May be too early. When you get that itchy feeling, don't scratch, quickly go and look in the mirror. I actually 'found' the first one I got in August(first time since childhood), that's how I knew what I was dealing with. You never forget that feeling though, I recognised it immediately.

mrsmaidamess · 19/11/2008 17:52

fartmisorry, please don't worry...I have had worms..... FIVE times. And I am sure I will get them again. I think of mine quite fondly now, actually.

southeatsastras · 19/11/2008 17:53

sure you haven't been wearing cheap nylon knickers?

FarTMISorry · 19/11/2008 17:55

I cant possibly look in the miror until dc are in bed, dont fancy doing that with an audience.
what would you do for thrush, canestan tablet or cream or something else?

OP posts:
FarTMISorry · 19/11/2008 17:56

what has happened to your name?

BoffinMum · 19/11/2008 17:58

Sometimes with threadworms it is itchy for a day or two before you find - ahem - evidence.

Here's a plan for you.

  1. Discreetly acquire Ovex or Boots own brand threadworm medicine - preferably tablet form.
  1. Give one to yourself and one to each of the children, on the pretext that they are vitamin pills.
  1. Find a pretext for changing your own bedding and PJs this evening, and possibly even the children's, and be very fussy about everyone's hand hygiene for a few days.
  1. Wear pants evening night under PJs and wash them on hot wash every time you use them. Use Filetti soap powder if you can in case there are allergy issues you have just developed. In fact consider washing all your pants through on a hot wash with Filetti to see if this helps anyway. You never know.
  1. Take a dose of Piriton at bedtime to stop night time itching and help you get some sleep.
  1. Avoid sex for obvious reasons.
  1. If itching is still there tomorrow, repeat Ovex tablet and Piriton procedure.
  1. If itching is still there after 3 days, see GP, because it could be any of the other things and GP may be a good first port of call. For example, there's a great cream called Trimovate available on prescription that has anti-fungal, steroid and antibiotic stuff in it that works very quickly and kills most nasties.

You are not alone with itchy bottie problems! xx

BoffinMum · 19/11/2008 17:59

Sorry, that should have read 'every night' not evening night.

TsarChasm · 19/11/2008 17:59

Oh god worms

They're not just itchy though. It sort of feels like er...'movement' in the general vicinity (or so I've heard )

BoffinMum · 19/11/2008 18:01

Forgot a big thing - avoid sharing towels as far as possible, or change towels very frequently otherwise.

BoffinMum · 19/11/2008 18:02

They bloody are itchy mate!
I was a teacher and had them about 500 times, or so it felt like anyway.
Don't get me onto nits.

DoNotAsfinishedXmasshopping · 19/11/2008 18:04

Agree with most of what BoffinMum says....except Piriton doe not stop the itching caused by worms. Piriton will only stop itching where it is caused by histamine release. Itching is caused by the physical crawling of the worms over you bum. The only thing that will stop thi is removing hte worms.

Itching will probably still be there tomorrow. It can take a full 24-48hrs for Ovex to work so don't go having more meds tomorrow. It iis, however, often recommended that you retreat after &(I think) days to catch any eggs that have hatched. It is also recommend that you synchronise the PJ/bed changing or you won't break the life cycle.

FarTMISorry · 19/11/2008 18:05

and to think I was worried about nits.
have just changed all the beds today, could try and wash and dry them can wash towles daily, is swimming Ok, I guess not.

OP posts:
southeatsastras · 19/11/2008 18:07

it might just be a common itchy bum though, have you tried just bunging some cream on it? i get it from cheap wine

FarTMISorry · 19/11/2008 18:07

have chucked all pj's except dh's in wash (he only has one pair and will not change them unless I wah and dry them same day, will do that tommorow.
going to bath dd's now and make everyone nice and fresh.
ewwww once more just incase you missed it the first million times.

OP posts:
BoffinMum · 19/11/2008 18:10

I have had personal success with that, Xmas, and it would do no harm. If it was a washing powder allergy or something like that it would have a beneficial effect anyway.

FarTMISorry · 19/11/2008 18:13

we only use ecover washing stuff anyway as dd has excema so i cant see it being that although I have had an itchy (but not nearly on the same scale) fanjo a but recently, maybe I should treat myself to some new keks.

OP posts:
FarTMISorry · 19/11/2008 18:17

You get an itchy bum from cheap wine (do you know you are supposed to drink it)?
