How did your child react to the mmr jab?

mummylonglegs · 10/03/2005 09:18

Dd had her mmr yesterday after my putting it off for about a year. She's 2.5 now. I posted yesterday as I found out later she may have been exposed to a child with chickenpox at the childminder and have been worrying.

This morning dd's quite hot and has a very runny nose. Could this be due to the mmr or is it likely to be unrelated? How did your kids respond to the jab? Did they get the listed possible side effects?

Thanks all. I have to be careful with Neurofen as she's asthmatic. So we try to stick to Calpol although when I spoke to the GP yesterday she said keeping the fever down is priority and to up her inhalers if need be.

She's really not at all well, doesn't want to do anything except lie with her head on the sofa. Her little hands are SO hot to touch.

Couldn't believe it when I saw this thread - my ds had his MMR done on Tuesday. Fine I thought - no reaction at all oh how wrong was I. He has the same symptoms as your dd Mummylonglegs. We have just been at a soft play centre which was a bit of a disaster he clung to me all the time which is just not him especially when he can climb and jump etc. Poor little mite is cuddled up with his Minnie Mouse in his cot now fast asleep...

My niece had a very severe reaction and was ill for about 2 weeks. Very high temp resulting in a fit swollen throat (possibly mumps symptoms) thrush in her mouth. She did pull through but it was a stressful 2 weeks.

Fimbo, when did he start to feel ill? Dd seemed ok really the night after the jab, it was the following day in the afternoon.

Reading all your posts and realising how many people's kids do get ill after this jab I feel quite furious that I wasn't given more info about the after effects than a pathetic photocopied sheet of paper which was the same one I was given when she had her 3 month jabs!

Just today Mummylonglegs. I never even got a photocopy of the information!! Just got told to use Calpol if he was "off-colour". I had to wake him up to go to school to collect dd and he screamed and screamed. He has started coughing a bit and sounds as if any minute now he is going to throw up - oh joy!

My friend's ds had his on Monday and he is showing the same symptoms which started yesterday

Blimey, our dd has suffered from measles (at 9 months) and rubella (1yr) already and was no way near as unwell as anything described in this thread

hi
my ds had his mmr at 12mths and had no symptoms until 2 weeks later when he had tonsilitis and a cold..may not have been related but they did mention he may have been more susceptible due to lowered immune system????????

Fimbo, dd's been coughing loads too. How old is your ds by the way? I have to say I'm not looking forward to tonight. Last night she was awake from 2-4.30am just very very hot and very fed up. I couldn't seem to get her temperature down properly no matter what I did.

Wheresmyfroggy, I would so much rather dd have just got the viruses naturally than go through this but there CAN be bad reactions to the viruses too. You can't win can you?

MLL-My ds is 15mths. He tries to play but then obviously doesn't feel well again and clambers up for a cuddle. I hate when he is like this as he is curious normally to what is going on around him and in to everything and although I moan that he has emptied all the drawers etc I would rather he was doing that than the way he is at the moment. He is also very very hot and sleepy despite his nap. Got to take dd out to her dance lessons later and am praying dh will be home by then so I don't have to drag him out again

sorry for those who are struggling with temps. When ds was ill i was told to give him
10mls calpol four times a day and 5mls nurofen 3times a day..obviously not if child has asthma but it did bring his temp down within 24 hrs

Your poor Ds, Fimbo, sounds just like dd. She's hot, coughing, lying on the sofa and looks very sorry for herself. She's normally such a non-stop chatterbox it's weird to see her so quiet ...

How was your night Fimbo? Ours was rough. Dd was awake 1.30-4am very hot and unable to sleep. She did then sleep until 8.30am thank goodness. But we're knackered today. Her nose is running thick yellow gunk. I'm really unsure if this is all to do with the mmr or is a separate viral thing. Very bad luck if it is! She's exhausted today but I'm finding it hard to get her off for her nap, she's currently singing 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' in her cot, interspersed with hideous sounding coughs ... Doesn't bode well for a good rest.

That sounds awful Bambi - is he ok now?

MML-Not a good night here either. He is asleep in his cot at the moment but keeps waking himself up because of the cough and dd has got it now as well, so like you not sure if MMR or not just seems a bit concidental though. Hoping by Easter we get some better weather and all these bugs/virus are killed off and our kids are MMR symptom free!!

Absolutely fine after all jabs

We always gave calpol about 1 hour before appointment

No idea if that was wrong or right but it is what we did

And had no problems

Report
mummylonglegs · 12/03/2005 17:21

bambi, do think all these problems are mmr related then?

Sorry to hear your Ds is still ill Fimbo. I think that dd's symptoms are separate but she may be particularly bad because of the mmr lowering her immunity. She's got nuclear yellow/green gunk from her nose and a grotty cough. She didn't manage to sleep very much but is being quite a trooper about it all so far I have to say. She seems mostly to get hot only in the night rather than in the day.

Yes, lockets, her eyes are very glassy looking and she's rubbing them quite a lot. But I thought the measles symptoms didn't come until 5-10 days after the jab and she started with this the next day?

Mummylonglegs, it may not be the jab. Me and my dd (nearly 3) had the WORST flu ever recently - she had huge temp of around 39.9 for five days, so poorly, cough, yellow snot. Awful. I was so ill too with a temp of over 39 for nearly a week! Could be that - at lot of people have succumbed. When my dd had the measles jab (single) at 18 months she didn't have a reaction until 7 days after. She had a bad cough, rash nand bit of a temp. Hope your dd feels better soon. Dinny

Not a single side effect at all.

Report
mummylonglegs · 13/03/2005 09:42

dinny, me and dp had that awful flu too about a month ago. I actually think dd's ill with a virus now but it could possibly be making her feel more grotty because of the mmr at the same time?
