Chronic sinusitis, has anyone ever heard of a cure other than surgery?

It is driving me insane. At this stage I have a horrible pain in my face more often than I don't
I have a referral to see a ENT consultant and I am just scared that he is going to suggest surgery. I know it is a terribly painful type of surgery and I know it is not always effective.
I have a whole range of other symptoms too such as tinnitus, hearing loss, vertigo and it is driving me mad.
Does anyone know of any success stories to give me some hope?

Don't know about surgery or alternatives, but would love to know how to get rid of it too
It is debilitating sometimes- you have my full sympathy Carmenere

I presume you have been down the 'beconase spray for 3 months' route? It cured my chronic sinusitis, but then I only had it for about a year.

My brother had the op - it was major surgery and didn't sort it out completely (sorry to not have good news to offer!)

Hi

Have you tried Thermal Auricular Therapy - Ear Candling. I have many clients who have had this problem and now have no symptoms. Some have had treatment in the past but this did not help.

Many clients were on various pain killing tablets and decongestant types prescribed by the doctor, they now do not need them or very very rarely.

If you would like more info let me know.

Good luck - it can really be helped.

girasole · 07/10/2008 10:52

I was tormented with this for months last year. It is absolutely horrible I agree. I took antibiotics for it but they didn't do anything.
I know that many people are extremely sceptical about homeopathy so I don't know if this is any help to you really but I have had great results using it. Tbh, in my heart I am a complete sceptic too. I don't really believe in the principles behind homeopathy but I know people who have had very good results for other conditions so I figured I had nothing to lose (I know this sounds like I am contradicting myself ). It still comes back now and again, but it's never as bad as it was originally. It's much more manageable now.
By the way, I also brought my ds, aged 2, to the homeopath to have his eczema treated and it has completely cleared up, so I don't adhere to the idea that homeopathic treatment is simply a placebo effect. He was too young to understand why he was even there. Hth.

Have you tried giving up dairy, or checking other food intolerances?

girasole · 07/10/2008 11:25

I don't know what the actual remedy was KerryMum, as I dont still have the bottle it came in. I went to a homeopath who had been recommended to me by a few different people and had a consultation with her. I just took the stuff she gave me, never thought to ask what it was .
A friend of mine uses a different homeopath and swears he is responsible for curing her ds's asthma. I don't know if that's true or if her ds simply grew out of it (he was around 12 when he saw the homeopath), but he certainly doesn't have asthma anymore. And I actually know lots of other people who have had favourable results with conditions like eczema, psoriasis, migraine etc.
Like I said, I don't really fully understand or believe in the principles of homeopathy, but yet I can't argue with the results I have seen and experienced [confused emoticon].

Kerry just also seen your post on eyeballs. I have a similar thing and also have sunis problems and a devisted septum[bone in nose] on the same side as my funny eye. I also get eye pain/headache there. I have come to the conclusion that they are all connected.

Clayhead · 07/10/2008 11:31

I gave up (most) dairy and it made the world of difference.

mousemole · 07/10/2008 13:42

get a netti pot. Only thing that cleared up my chronic sinusitis from last year.

southeastastra · 07/10/2008 13:45

i have the same cam. just waiting for my date now for surgery. i have found the neti pot the only useful thing so far.

beeper · 07/10/2008 14:34

I had it and switched to goats milk, never looked back, it went in a week.

Winetimeisfinetime · 07/10/2008 14:43

Oooh coochy - I also have sinus problems, a deviated septum and a twitchy eye on the same side.

I have been scheduled for surgery on my nose and sinuses but cancelled it as so many people told me it doesn't sort it out permanently and after reading horror stories on the net about the op.

I have found a netti pot quite helpful and lots and lots of steam inhalations.

mabanana · 07/10/2008 14:48

can't promise it would cure you, but I would recommend MLD (manual lymphatic drainage)massage if you can find a practitioner. I had it once when I was horribly blocked up and just started to absolutely stream! Totally cleared me. Also it's fabulously relaxing.

What is/do you do with a netti pot?? I also decided I didnt want surgery after a colleague at work told me about when his sister had it. Sounded dreadful! Tell me more about this manual lymphatic drainage and what it involves.

itgetseasier · 07/10/2008 16:00

Sorry to hijack OP. I have this too and am PG, does anyone know of any suitable treatments while PG? I have just ordered a steamer and have been on nasonex since june.

mousemole · 07/10/2008 16:27

netti pot fine when pregnant. I would get ceramic one - ensure no leaching from the plastic. You can usually buy the salt from the netti pot sellers. LOVE mine. Use it daily as preventative measure. I think SEAstra has hers after persuasion from me when we were both suffering earlier in the year. I had the surger years ago and it did nothing.

coochybottom · 07/10/2008 16:33

How/what do you do with a Neti pot then?

pofaced · 07/10/2008 16:46

Try neil-med sinus rinse - available otc in pharmacies. Basically it's saline rinse administered through a plastic bottle up the nostril (an American version of Netipot). It really is good, if pretty gross... think colonic irrigation for the sinuses
