Come diagnosis my rubbish illness Help me please!

I need a list of possible illnesses to present to my GP

I've been ill for about 4 months now and despite hundreds of blood tests an endoscopy and a colonoscopy nothing has been diagnosed.

GP has admitted he has run out of ideas and would welcome any suggestions I come up with(we have a good relationship and I like him to be up front with me). So I want to present him with a list to investigate.

My symptoms are: achy joints, fatigue, blurred vision (coming and going), numb legs in morning, sometimes v. swollen stomach (less now I have given up gluten), mood swings, word confusion (eg saying table instead of car!), poor concentration.

Now according to the tests he has ruled out thyroid problems, coeliac disease, all my blood levels are good and well within normal range.

I have been under a gastroendologist at the hospital who has had no more ideas either.

i have ruled out ME ( I had it for two years and this is such a different feeling...and is not made worse by exercise or doing more than usual)

So any suggestions, no matter how random, would be gratefully received. And I promise I won't think that I have them all !

Have you seen a neurologist?

TheBlonde · 23/09/2008 18:41

what blood tests did he do?

KatyMac · 23/09/2008 18:41

TBh it sounds very like my version of ME (CFS) diagnosed in 95

It goes through various stages - but they are definitly lots of my symptoms but not always combined with the fatigue

SaintRiven · 23/09/2008 18:42

candida?
FMS?
B12 deficeincy?

lou031205 · 23/09/2008 18:45

Have you discussed MS with the doctor, or lupus?

Pushpinia · 23/09/2008 18:47

Some of it could be stress related. try giving up dairy for the bloating...works for my sister who often used to look pregnant!

The stomach swelling also could be a gynae problem. (oC has it as a symptom but that wouldn't tie in with many other symptoms you're having)

bossykate · 23/09/2008 18:47

perimenopause?

noonki · 23/09/2008 18:51

Provinciallady - I haven't seen a neurologist, though a friend mentioned that to me too.

TheBlonde - I'm not entirely sure of all of the blood tests, but know that they included: white cell count, haemoglobin, liver function, thyroid function tests, full blood count, electrolytes and all the other standard ones (that say normal) - it does say that I have a mildly raised ALP of 106 and a eGFR of 80 ... which means nothing to me!

oh also I had a ultrasound scan of my adomen that showed nothing

Katymac - that is true on paper they look classically like ME but the fatigue is so differnt (tbh not nearly as horrible feeling)

SaintRiven - what is FMS?

Try probiotics to rebalance your gut, going gluten-free would have exposed various vit deficiencies of both fat- and water-soluble vits and minerals that will take a good few months to improve

Take occasional B complex, A, C, E, omegas, Mg..

Yes, cut out dairy if you can

TheBlonde · 23/09/2008 18:56

the fatigue and concentration could be B12 deficiency
did they check your B12 level?

the ALP relates to your liver function as does the eGFR

Winetimeisfinetime · 23/09/2008 19:19

Alot of your symptoms could be due to perimenopause/menopause - see here. If your not of an age for it to be that, could it be some sort of hormonal problem ?

yeahyeah · 23/09/2008 19:25

You should really look at yeast...it does sound a lot like it. Check out candidafree.co.uk there is a really good test to take on the website...and you can also do the spit test. www.adhdrelief.com/CandidaTest.html

for some reason dr.s don't like to acknowledge it, it's a real thing. I had a real problem. Threelac is amazing, it's a kind of probiotic, and going on a yeast-free diet, no sugar, or yeast...or alchohol for 3 months or so. Mumnet helped me find out what it was, I'd been for loads of bloodtests too...

try the test at candidafree, the lady there is so helpful, she is really not out to sell anything, just someone wanting to share with other people how to get well again as she had it...

Spidermama · 23/09/2008 19:32

Candida albicans?

SpacePuppy · 23/09/2008 19:46

als?

morgansauntie · 23/09/2008 19:50

could be fibromyalgia a lot of the symptoms fit.

AnybodyHomeMcFly · 23/09/2008 19:54

Lyme disease? You get it from ticks which live in long grass so dog walkers and hikers are prone. Esp in areas where deer graze I think.

avenanap · 23/09/2008 19:55

I would ask your GP if you could get referred to a neurologist too. The leg numbness would make me want to do this.

noonki · 23/09/2008 20:22

Thanks to you all for taking time to answer me

lou03125 - GP said Lupus unlikely because of blood test results, but hasn't mentionned MS, just looked it up and the early signs are similar so will ask him

pushpina - I'm not that stressed, I did give up dairy for about two weeks but made not a jot of difference. So decided to go Gluten free which is definately having some improvements but not dramatic.that is interesting about the gynae thing. will mention to GP

bossykate/winetime - I looked at the link and that too sounds possible (am 33, young but not too young - my future DC3 would be out the picture)

anybodyhome thanks for the suggestion, but i haven't been bitten by a tick - though know exactly waht they look like -- bleugh (when full)
spidermama and Yeah yeah - I too have been thinking about candida, when I had ME i did the diet from hell for about 2 months and I did improve massively, will give it a go if nothing is diagnosed soon (have to build myself up to it again...no tea or sugar or fruit or alcohol boo hoo!)but I am a firm believer in candida

nightcat - that is interesting will keep my vit intact up.

theblonde they did check my b12 and that was good, thanks for explaining those to me!

spacepuppy what is als?

morganauntie - thanks for link, that is now on my list, definately similar symptoms

avenanap - thanks I will do

phew!

I second the neurologist. My DHs friend had the fatigue, vision problems, some numbness (not sure where) and the word confustion. He had a small amount of water on the brain. (all fixed now and nothing wrong at all).

I'm not saying you have this, just that some of your symptoms are probably more likely to make more sense to a neurologist rather than your GP.

Hope you get some answers!

noonki · 26/09/2008 13:06

thanks smallships - will do!

You don't have ALS. That's a horrific thing to have and you don't have it.

I've had those symptoms before and never really got to the bottom of it...In hind sight I think my blurred vision was an incorrect prescription- needed a stronger lens. The rest of it was a combination of post viral type thing and I also have endometriosis which causes bloating, aches and pain, fuzzy brain and tiredness. A laparoscopy is the only way to diagnose that- an ultrasound wouldn't show it but you would probably have pain linked to your cycle.

I had tests with neurologists, a colonoscopy and an endoscopy too.

Billster · 04/10/2008 19:10

Hi there. Sorry to hear what a miserable time you are having.

I would be interested in hearing how you get on as I am experiencing almost exact same symptoms (worse over last 5 weeks) and currently have yeast infection also (pretty sure it is a candida issue but interested to see how you get on.)

I have fibromyalgia and hypermobility syndrome (joint laxity) and my initial symptoms were joint aching, fatigue (as my muscles were so tense I was exhausted by the effort the muscles were putting in each day), bloated stomach...caused by clenched and tight stomach muscles and psoas muscle in spasm...
Numbness is various limbs plus patches of heat and cold around my back...

I found that an osteopath aligned my bones and muscles and provided relief. It may be worth seeing one to check out your physical alignment and general muscle health.
I also had physio to relax my muscles.

As you are not having much luck with a GP/hospital diagnosis it may be worth checking out your general muscle and skeletal alignment.

NewNameOtherOneWasObvious · 28/11/2008 17:15

A lot of these symptoms (though not all - I don't think she had actual blurred vision but at one stage had one of those annoying little black spots that wouldn't go away, nor did get confused with her words) were had by my sister for years. She was eventually self-diagnosed with Cushings Syndrome. It's caused by BENIGN tumour either on the pituitary or the adrenal glands (sometimes both).
Ask docs to check your Cortisol levels.
Just a suggestion
