I have a spot at the top of my bum which is more of a lump under the skin (so nothing to pop! )

It is at the base of my spine and the top of my bum crack (TMI I know but I cannot describe it any better )

It is soooo excruciatingly painful that it woke me up at 1am and I had to go and lie on the sofa and watch TV.

I can feel it as a lump and it feels as big as Mount Vesuvius but nothing can be done. I have put cream on it but I am really in agony and was all day yesterday too.

Just wanted to share my agony with you.

could it just be a boil??!
i get lots of boils and they can be very painfull.

piratecat · 21/09/2008 11:54

there are no dodgy pictures at all,as far as i could see.

piratecat · 21/09/2008 11:55

yeah could just be a boil, it seems to be a common site for trouble.

SlartyBartFast · 21/09/2008 11:55

isnt a boil the same thing?

yes dh had this too, pilondal sinus. packed with ingrowing hairs that can run along a tract and out another place!!! not to scare you, his was only a cm deep or so but do do do get it seen to. common enough and any doc would recognise it.

FlightAttendent · 21/09/2008 12:01

If its come up that wuick I'd put my money on a boil or large spot.

A sebaceous cyst is something that needs careful removal - not because it['s life threatening but because it is a build up of sebaceous fluid (oil) in a little pocket, that grows very slowly over a few years usually and then when you squeeze out the fluid, the pocket will still build up again iyswim. So a surgeon has to remove all of the sac as well (no you can't do this at home!) and even then they might miss a bit and it could come back but usually is Ok afterwards.

This is far too quick to be a cyst imo.

Put hot compresses on it, if a boil it will come to a head. Then be v careful and don't squeeze it. Once it bursts (or it might just go back down if you're lucky) clean around it carefully to remove any bacteria and stop getting another one nearby.

wotulookinat · 21/09/2008 12:19

I've had a similar things come and go for well over a year now. No way am I showing it to the doc. Too embarrassing. Would rather put up with the pain.

Majeika · 21/09/2008 12:24

Thanks everyone!

DH thinks it isnt an ingrowing hair as there is no hair in the 'area'.

I am supposed to be having a smear tomorrow but I think this will need checking first.

Oh the embarrassment!

dh's came up quickly.

egypt · 21/09/2008 12:43

well, he didn't notice it then suddenly it was painful. obv been growing for some time.

LackaDAISYcal · 21/09/2008 12:58

our bodies are covered in teeny hairs; doesn't have to be a big thick pube causing the irritation.

GordonTheGopher · 21/09/2008 13:06

Sounds like an ingrowing hair. BIL had one a few years ago and had to have an operation!

AnAngelWithin · 21/09/2008 13:09

i had this. i got dh to stick a big pin in it and squeeze it for me

JackieNo · 21/09/2008 13:23

I had an abscess there when I was 18. Involved a trip to hospital, to have it lanced, then loads of visits from the nurse to pack it with gauze, so it healed from the inside out, so to speak. Not fun. I do remember loads of embarrassment when I was in the hospital, lying face down on a table, and the doc brought in a group of student doctors .

clayre · 21/09/2008 13:29

dp had the pilondal sinus and the best thing you can do is to go to A&E they will send you a ward to get treated the next day, if you go to the dr they would have to refer and it could take months

welshdeb · 21/09/2008 13:32

Sounds like a pilonidal cyst, I had one when I was in my early 20s. It was extremely painful, I could't sit down and had to lie on my front. I had to have a course of horse pill type antibiotics and eventually I had to have it surgically removed.

Get to the docs and get it checked out

Majeika · 21/09/2008 13:40

DH thinks it is a spot.

I think I am in agony.

If it is this bad tomorrow then I will go to the drs first thing and get it seen to.

I just really really hope it disappears before ds's op on Friday.

thanks for all your input ladies.......

Spots won't cause you to be in agony!!!

Majeika · 21/09/2008 13:49

You are right.

Let me define agony as I might have over-exaggerated

I can sit on the bed and Mumsnet

I can eat lunch at the table with the family

Sitting on the sofa is more painful

Have to go out to a bike shop in a minute and the thought of driving is not thrilling me tho I will be able to do it.

OP posts:
ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 21/09/2008 17:09

he he!

I still think maybe a spot wouldn't cause that much pain

clam · 21/09/2008 17:19

I've had this. Pilonidal sinus, (AKA boil on the bum). Couldn't sit, lie down, walk...... Probably the most painful thing I've ever experienced and I'm sorry to say has to be excised by surgery (general). Then packed with gauze daily for a few weeks so it can heal from the base upwards. Nurse told me she'd seen grown men crying with pain. GET STRONG PAINKILLERS!!!!
It's basically an ingrowing hair follicle (have also had similar-type things in the armpit) which becomes infected.
See your doctor ASAP.
I truly hope it's not this, for your sake, but if it is, you will need to make household arrangements for the next week or two. Keep us posted!

agree go to doc and naughty dh!!

expatinscotland · 21/09/2008 17:54

i had something like this on my underarm.

i put neat tea tree oil on it for about ten days and it went away.

it was horribly painful.

i'd have no qualms about seeing your doctor, though, if i were you.

if these fecking piles are not GONE within a few weeks of giving birth you can better believe i'm seeing the GP to get them gone somehow.
