Thanks - I am going to look into getting then, you have been succesful in convincing me

MmeLindt · 18/08/2008 22:29

I love my mooncup, I would never go back to tampons which I always found uncomfortable. I find removing or inserting my MC is not much messier than using towels or tampons. Never had it slip out.

Best tip for MC use is to make sure that you have a good hold of the slippery little bugger when you take it out, I lost hold of mine last month and it was not pretty

EyeballsintheSky · 18/08/2008 22:34

I bought a mooncup and tried it last month but it hurt and I didn't like it. I trimmed the end as per instructions but didn't want to trim it to the extent that it would need a highly skilled medical team to get it out

What am I doing wrong? I had to nip to the loos in Wetherspoons to take it out!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 18/08/2008 22:49

Where was it hurting?

PixelHerder · 18/08/2008 22:51

EITS - I (generally) love my MC but find it can be a bit uncomfortable for the first day or two of my period if it's not positioned exactly right, I think it's because the cervix is at its lowest then and the MC can rub against it. It gets much better by day 3 when the cervix has started to rise (making more room, I suppose) and then I tend to forget it's there at all! Maybe try it again on a 'later' day until you've got the hang of positioning?

I too would recommend getting rid of the stalk, it's easy to get it out with a bit of practice.

This time last year I had no idea about mooncups or wandering cervixes, MN is truly the font of all knowledge

EyeballsintheSky · 18/08/2008 23:45

Er, I think it was round the entrance and just inside (sorry if tmi but difficult to discuss without tmi )

Eyeballs - yes, snip it all off. I was apprehensive about doing it, but actually found the ridged base of the MC easier to grab hold of than the stalk.

Bumperlicious · 19/08/2008 09:28

It defo takes practice, don't give up after the first month - it gets much easier. I think it is a mooncup right of passage to start a thread along the line of "How the crap do I get the damn thing out?" Search "mooncup" and "childbirth flashbacks" for mine .

brimfull · 19/08/2008 09:31

god it is fab

I forgot to take mine on holiday this yr and ..what a pain using tampons again.

I'm trying to persuade my 16 yr old to give it a go..obv I'd buy her her own ...boak

Right, this is going to sound stupid...here goes, do you need more than one? How often/thoroughly do you need to clean it during a given day? I do high impact aerobics, is it comfy enough for that?

I want to get one, but have swithered because I wondered about having to clean it in a public toilet (boak) or do you just empty it and pop it back from whence it came? I've got quite a good pain threshhold and wouldn't mind suffering a little discomfort until I got used to it.

Aefondkiss · 19/08/2008 10:11

Carnival, I have a wee bottle of water and wash it out with that when I am in public loos, works fine, you only need one.

I would use it for any sport, once I was sure I had got the hang of it, again because tampons are evil in comparison to the mc....

Carnival · 19/08/2008 10:21

Cheers, AFK. I will order one online now. Part of my holiday is on a canal boat in October and I was thinking that it would be a bit tricky/evil to have all the normal tampon and liner waste on my friend's boat, she's very green and I suspect a mooncupper herself. That should allow enough time for a practice run, before I go.

Aefondkiss · 19/08/2008 10:34

yes, it is much nicer washing a wee bit of blood out of a mooncup(in fact I think it makes people feel their period is much less yuck, imho, I feel much more at ease with my period using an mc, it is a positive thing) than trying to dispose of tampons etc, good luck Carnival, I know lots of people get on great with their mooncup from the start, it took a lot of determination on my part, but it is worth it.

Carnival · 19/08/2008 11:24

Just ordered it. It says it can take up to 14 days, I'm willing my period to come at the right time! thanks for your support, afk

AbbaFan · 19/08/2008 12:04

Ok another silly question

Is it easy to wee while it's in?

MmeLindt · 19/08/2008 12:12

Yes, no problem to wee with one in.

I have also cut off the stalk completely. I took a couple of days to get used to it.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 19/08/2008 18:24

I had to cut the stalk off almost completely too because it was 'poking' and digging in. It's very comfortable. You can do any sports - including swimming. YOu dont have to empty it as often as you'd change a tampon or a sanitary towel.

In fact, on lighter days i've forgotten to empty it and it has been in all day.

I've not really had to empty it in public because you can go so long without needing to empty it, but, a small bottle of water carried with you will do, or, just wipe it out with a bit of tissue and stick it back in.

You only need one.

As for cleaning - I rinse mine often when changing it through the day, and only boil it to sterilise once - before using it at the start of my period. That's it.

I will always be grateful to Hunker for getting that as a wedding present for me

Aefondkiss · 19/08/2008 19:20

I never got on with wiping it with toilet tissue, it then ends up with bits of loo roll stuck to it, so if you are going to empty it in public loos, a quick rinse is much better, plus it is easier to put the mc in if you have just rinsed it with water so it isn't dry.

Takver · 19/08/2008 19:30

Any one else had issues with sizing? I bought the larger one as per the instructions and couldn't get it comfortable at all despite trimming all the stalk off. Last month I gave in & bought the smaller one and it is definitely more comfortable though I still don't like it as much as my cloth towels.
(I'm working on learning to love the mooncup as I've started to get eczema on my inner thighs which the towels make worse, cloth better than disposables but still a bit rough).

DustyTV · 19/08/2008 20:56

VVVQV, can you really go swimming with it. My cousins are staying the night and want to go swimming tomorrow and I Thought I would have to but some tampons.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 19/08/2008 21:21

Yep

TigerFeet · 19/08/2008 21:31

I heart my mooncup very much.

I have cut off all the stem. It can feel a little uncomfortable on th efirst couple of days of each period but a bit of repositioning sorts it out.

I swim with mine.

Mine stays in all day on light days too - no risk of toxic shock so if it's not full it can be left as long as you like.

I am strangely fascinated with the contents and I've learned a lot about how the flow changes over the course of my period.

sandy4 · 19/08/2008 21:37

Can anyone tell me why my period is lighter now??? it's my second mooncup month.
