DD2 2.3 always has a cough - any ideas? Have I missed something?

Title says it all really.

Even when she seems in otherwise good health she seems to have coughing fits.

Any ideas?

i remember when my SD had a cough for about 4-5 yrs and suddenly it went. Unknown why she had it.

DH has just suggested this evening that she could be allergic to something and that triggers the cough.

Glad to hear your SD's cough disappeared - did she sleep better once it went? My DD2 is a very poor sleeper.

my dd 6 had cough in night, doctor gave her inhaler and she is being treated for asthma. doc said cannot be sure she has it, but best to use inhalers than leave it un attended. no cough in night anymeore.

i asked for ages to do the blow in the tube, when he did it was not that good>>>>

worth an ask.

My DD aged 5.5 kept having coughing fits when she got hot or if she had been running, or if she had a cold etc.
She is now being treated for Asthma.

Thanks windyweather. I think I will ask the docs next time I am there (seems to be a weekly event visiting them at the moment )

I can't just leave the poor little sausage. Not sure how they diagnose that sort of thing in a 2yo though...

Asthma would be my thought as with WindyWeather's DD my friends daughter also had a night cough and was given an inhaler and it stopped the night cough which would wake her and sometimes make her vomit

MNP, thanks god that did not happen to my dd. its given thro nebulizer ( could be spelt diffent), also have one for school and they are great.

I think they will just try and get dd to blow and have a few tries.

Yes he tube efforts were never good but now at 9yo she is very athletic and no longer needs the inhaler - had it till age 6 from 2yo.

Both my boys have had persistent coughs and both have inhalers which have helped a great deal.
They dont call it asthma when they are so young as a lot of children out grow it I think.

Every time she gets a cold she has a bad cough with it - DD1 wasn't like that at all. I know all children are different but when the others a nursery get the same cold they never have the accompanying cough like DD2 - does that sound familiar to you all?

DD2s cough does make her sick a lot and keeps her awake. She finds it quite distressing

Yes it does BigBadMousey i really would speak to the GP, it made a hige difference to my friend's DD as she had very poor sleep and was always knackered and tetchy before, sje went from sometimes hourly wakings due to the coughing never mind the clear ups to sleeping thru within days and became a sunny child.

BBM does she have excema or hayfever.

my dd has both, although excema at minimal now but hayfever really badly effects her eyes.

Do you have any pets?
By DB anD DSis suffered from constant coughs when we had our hamster... as soon as it died, the coughs cleared up.

My nephew was finally diagnosed with asthma after having a long-term night-time cough. He manages it very sucessfully with inhalers, but does also have several allergies which can set it off.

If it is asthma, it is best to find out sooner than later and can be managed fairly easily usually.

Hello eachpeach - one cat - she is out most of the time destroying wildlife but I have got her on my list of suspects (not least because she thinks all the cots in the house are for her ). Also two GPigs - they're on the list too.

She has an appointment with the asthma specialists at the docs next week. Spoke to my doc about it today and he said it is likely they will give her an inhaler and see how it goes.

Another positive for inhalers here. DS1 used to cough every night, and often was sick with it. After 2 days of using the yellow inhaler he stopped, and has barely coughed since. They won't diagnose asthma until they are old enough to be tested (blowing into a tube to see how much oxygen they store in their lungs I think). I was a bit about taking steroids every day and having to put a 3 year old on long term medication, but looking back the inhalers have had such a positive influence on his whole life my worries seem pretty stupid.
Hope all goes well at the Drs next week.

I'm at the guinea pigs tbh- DB and DSis never had a problem when parents got a cat...
Was purely an allergy.

OT- your DS is looking so big already! and gorgeous of course.... I was surprised to see your long hair...never pictured you with long hair, dunno why!

GPs are outdoors now so will see if that makes a difference.

OT - yes, long hsir in desparate need of attention! He is a big boy - and very cuddly with it . 10 weeks today

bbm - my DD (3) has exactly the same. GP eventually referred her to consultant, who did lots of tests (including nasty ones like cystic fibrosis) - all negative thank the Lord, and we tried inhalers too. nothing has worked, so they are going to do a camera exploration of her chest. best to go and get it checked out i'd say, don't worry about harrassing the GP. (don't mean to scare you but a persistant cough can be a symptom of other grim stuff as well as asthma). i am sure its nothing though.

EPPM - Eviction of GPs hasn't made a bit of difference - if anything she is worse atm

Will see what the asthma nirse says to Monday. My poor docs are used to me harrassing them (I think I'll soon have my own private parking space at the surgery the way we are going right now.
