here it is - a new thread for those of us just beginning a diet.
let's share tips and moral support.
i used to be 8st 10lb (i'm only 5ft4in and was always slim) but piled on the pounds during pregnancy, maxing out at 11st5lb. With mega, mega effort i got down to 9st 2lb a while ago-it took months cos i was only losing about 1lb a week - and i could just never get below that. That means many of my clothes are too tight. some are just a bit uncomfy, other are totally unwearable.
and i've gone back up to 9st5lb again, so it's time for a new campaign.
What's your goal, and what are your weaknesses?
I stared at a huge chocolate donut in our staff canteen for what felt like ages when i went to get a cup of tea this morning. i swear it almost physically hurt to walk away from that donut

Can I join in? Well, just two days in to new diet. I'm a good 13 pounds over pre-pregnancy weight and that was not an ideal starting point IYKWIM.

I am doing a version of the Montignac/GI diet. No bad carbs, low-fat, no refined sugar. I don't find missing out on the sweets that hard, but my main issues are that glass of wine I have every night AND portion control.

I'm 21 months post-preganancy and those extra pounds are still here. I told myself I would never be one of those women... [sigh]

girlnextdoor · 05/08/2008 19:56

welcome- and hope we can all help each other!

I am not doing too well- problem is that DD is at home from uni and I am making more puddings etc- she is super thin and can eat whatever she likes and I am nibbling the odd mouthful in between healthy meals- but reckon it all adds up to another 200cals over the day! help!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 05/08/2008 21:05

Just had a lovely low GI supper, marinated chiken thighs rice and salad and my stewed fruit is in the fridge for tomorrow morning so will let you knwo how that tastes.

Hello thehuntress.

Girlnextdoor - a friend of mine has done hypnotherapy to stop the exra nibbling, that has really helped her.

silvermum · 06/08/2008 12:42

reasonably successful day for me yesterday but not exactly by intention - i had to eat out for work at lunchtime and chose what seemed the healthiest thing on the menu - hummus and pitta bread. however, was nervous and ate far too much of both, and ended up feeling bit sick all afternoon. got to the gym and ran off 500cals on the treadmill, but wasn't hungry all evening, so it was easy ish not to nibble. down to 9st2lb this morning but probably just dehydrated!
may have to hide scales as weighing every day bit demotivating...

silvermum · 06/08/2008 14:50

another day another business lunch...but feeling proud of myself as didn't touch the bread; and chose smoked salmon with salad. . how you getting on huntress? i also didn't think i'd be one of those women..."letting themselves go" etc! (as i pitch up to work wearing sloppy trousers and trainers...)

FiveGoMadInDorset · 06/08/2008 21:09

Good day today so treating myuself to a glas of wine.

silvermum · 07/08/2008 13:09

despite cycling and good day yesterday, weight gone up!!!! WTF? hoping water retention or something. so frustrating! i KNOW i should put away the scales.

OP posts:
girlnextdoor · 07/08/2008 16:33

Just to help- did you know that muscle weighs more than fat?

My personal trainer (!!!) told me that. She says go by the feel of your clothes, not the scales.

I was delighted to see I had lost 400gms this morning, but I don't rate my scales at all- they are digital "fat scales" and I can stand on them 5 minutes later and have either gone up or down a half a kilo!!

This is the first set of scales I have owned in over 25 years and I think I will bin them- it's just depressing.

silvermum · 07/08/2008 19:54

hmm, i have had the same scales for about five years now. i thought they were quite good -they're digital fat scales too. the make is Tanita. i'm baffled by my supposed fat content though, which fluctuates wildly. i did know muscle is heavier than fat, which is encouraging and i think does partially account for my extra weight, but not totally.
i didn't realise there's a dieters "club" board on mumsnet (right at the bottom of the discussion board subject listings) so we are all sort of in the wrong place. should we stick here or switch to that?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 08/08/2008 07:47

Good Mornign ladies and what a good morning it is, I don't have digital scales but mine say that I have lost 4ibs in my first week.

silvermum · 08/08/2008 12:38

ooh wow, that's great news! i'm not going on the scales again till next Friday. it's too depressing. perhaps my body is just fixed at 9st 2lb! it seems i'd a have to run daily half marathons and eat nothing but gruel to see an '8' on the scales!
just eaten three jaffa cakes as Friday treat. 138 cals total so not too naughty.

OP posts:
girlnextdoor · 08/08/2008 21:58

how is everyone doing?

This morning according to my wildly inaccurate fat scales, I had lost 700gms-(300gms down since yesterday) almost a kilo- this week although I have had a couple of bad days. Hoping I can make it 1 kg by Sunday!

silvermum · 09/08/2008 07:16

Morning ladies - am v. pleased. this morning my scales say 9st 1.6 lb. i've definitely lost some weight! i haven't seen a 9.1 anything since i got a stomach bug months ago! so at last i'm seeing some results!
i've been really really disciplined about chocolate this week (my big weakness) - am now well out of the habit of having a chocolate bar every night and no donuts or cake all week.
the only thing is it's the weekend, and that's when i tend to eat more naughty things. we usually have pizza every other saturday night (tonight)
and saturday morning is my buttered toast at work day. i can skip the toast without too much pain but the pizza - ouch, that will hurt not having that...it's our 'end of week' celebration. any suggestions anyone? should we skip it for something healthy? okay, i know the answer to that...!

OP posts:
girlnextdoor · 09/08/2008 07:50

well done silvermum!

The pizza should be ok if you cut down on other stuff over the weekend? maybe a small salad for lunch- or some soup and fruit? And maybe just a small portion of pizza with a large salad? (I'm thinking a quarter of a large pizza as a portion).

good luck!

I have lost 700gms in total over about 5 days so am aiming for the 1 kilo by tomorrow if possible!

silvermum · 09/08/2008 15:23

No pizza. don't want to spoil the week's efforts at this tender stage! have bought fresh fish instead. pizza next weekend maybe!

girlnextdoor · 11/08/2008 15:03

how are we all doing?

I did not have a brilliant day yesterday as was out all day and had a tiny salad for lunch and was so starving when i got home that I had a piece of cake and a few too many nibbles.

However, I had walked about 3 miles in all yesterday - round London, lol, so when I got on scales today I had dropped another 100gs, making 800kgs ( almost a kilo) which I am pleased about. Still got a way to go- got some new knickers in M&S and do not like the way my belly falls over them!

silvermum · 13/08/2008 12:32

hello, i've had a good few days on the diet front. was down to 9st 1.2lb this morning - the lowest i've seen it since pre baby (except when i had food poisoning!)
i feel in great shape and ran (well, very slow jogged) 12 miles on Sunday. i amazed myself because i haven't jogged more than seven miles since DS was born a year ago. i just kept going! it was a bit of a one off but i'm glad i can still do it.
now i just need to keep it up, which is the hard bit. can totally relate to what happened to you, girlnextdoor -getting too hungry is fatal and you just end up having more than you would have if you'd eaten a bigger lunch or had a mid afternoon healthy snack. the same happened to me last night and i had to abandon my no carb rule as my steamed chicken nowhere near filled me up.

OP posts:
girlnextdoor · 13/08/2008 18:35

WEll done silvermum! 12miles!!

I am fed up- I had managed to maintain my loss of almost a kilo and then today had gone up another 400gms- a pound. I have been walking and working out at home, not really overeaten at all. so today I am trying to be very strict.

The weather has been so bad today that no walk- so maybe have to do a workout now.........

silvermum · 13/08/2008 22:08

it's soooo frustrating when you go up despite all your efforts. i think that's why people say not to weigh yourself every day (i find this impossible! just too tempting to step on those scales...) as you get demoralised when it goes up for no apparent reason.
i have been a bit bad tonight - was so tired and hungry after cycling home against gale force gusts i have had quite a big supper, including noodles (not exactly low fat) and a glass of red wine. got to live a little sometimes..
hang in there girlnextdoor. we'll get there!

OP posts:
thehuntress · 14/08/2008 12:37

Hello Ladies - sorry I've been MIA but I've started a new job so not much free time lately. Anyway, things are going okay here. 2lbs lost last week. I got through the weekend with no bad carbs. Had one or two extra glasses of wine I could have done without, but am relatively proud of myself.

Girlnextdoor - I always found that an increase in weight preceded a whoosh of lost weight. so hang in there. don't give in.

And silvermum, v impressive on 12 miles. I'm envious. With the new job, I can't sneak out to the gym like i used to. And I leave early to get home to see my daughter so there is no time to exercise. It's really depressing me because I've never tried to lose weight without exercising. I don't know if it's possible!

girlnextdoor · 14/08/2008 16:57

I went down another 300gms this morning- if only I could lose 1kgs and keep it off i'd feel I was making progress- anyway, had a good day today so far..........

silvermum · 15/08/2008 18:14

thehuntress i think it is possible - in fact ironically it might be a bit easier as muscle weighs more and some types of exercise make you put on weight! but i'm sure the doctors wouldn't agree with that and it's not very politically correct to say so!
well it's Friday night and i've just been to the gym and i hated it and am feeling really resentful about the whole diet thing. i just want to go and gobble fish and chips and cake and wine and all the rest of it!
it was far too hot and airless in the gym - the aircon doesn't work and the fan on the treadmill had broken. so it was just disgusting. i struggled my way through the session feeling fed up. gah!

OP posts:
girlnextdoor · 15/08/2008 20:29

silvermum- thanks for the support!

I weighed less today than I have for ages so lost 900gms altogether! So that 1st kilo has almost gone. Not a lot in almost 2 weeks, but I am sticking with it- I need to get rid of another kg at least.

Hope you are doing okay!

girlnextdoor · 15/08/2008 20:33

thehuntress- I was told by my trainer (lol, she only comes about once a month!) that you should not go by weight alone as muscle does weigh more than fat- she says go by how your clothes feel.

If you have "Fat Scales" the ideal is that the fat goes down and the weight goes up- showing you are converting fat into lean muscle.

silvermum · 17/08/2008 10:42

how's everyone doing post Friday night and Saturday?
didn't do too badly last night though had a big glass of wine and some dark chocolate.
not sure how hard to push myself as we want to conceive in the next few months - a lot of heavy exercise may not help?
