Had really bad stomach pain for about a week, but suffer from IBS so have not taken too much notice, really bad diorrhea but again have IBS.

Just been to the loo and my poo was swimming in blood. Bright red blood. Have had a bit before but never this amount.

Am not going to call an ambulance but could go to A and E, or walk in centre or go to the doctors on Monday but I will struggle getting time off work.

Have seen the emergency doctor he said it is almost certainly colitis. I am to see my GP on Monday and he will make a referral although it is further complicated by the fact that I am moving at the end of the month.

He said it if gets any worse or I loose any more blood independent of going to the loo I should go to A and E but he has a feeling that they will just look at me and say just go to the gp.

FWIW my BIL had rectal bleeding and was told by nhs direct to go to A&E and he went and they were really good to him. I'm really sad to hear you say you don't want to waste resources, honestly you're not, especially when you hear about A&E being full of drunks half the time. You're being very British about this but nhs direct wouldn't tell you go if they didn't think it the right thing to do. I really hope you're better soon xx

wotulookinat · 20/07/2008 13:18

What is colitis? Hope you're not feeling too bad.

bellavita · 20/07/2008 13:52

Hi Twinset - hope everything turns out ok. DH suffered with ulcerative colitis for many years. If you need someone to talk, please do not hesitate to CAT me as DH speaks to people (sufferers and relatives) for the IA.

We go away on Friday morning for two weeks, but if you have any questions after speaking to your GP - please get in touch.

i get it

it isnt v nice but you will be ok over the weekend

twinsetandpearls · 20/07/2008 16:12

That is what I am thinking, I was told years ago I have IBS, is it likely I have just got a mis diagnosis and it was colitis all along.

I think one of my friends had Colitis - but an unusual form set off by stress. May be worth bearing in mind that stress (moving...) can be a factor. Hope you get correct diagnosis and correct treatment. FWIW after serious bout at which her colitis was diagnosed, my friend seems to have managed her condition pretty well.

twinsetandpearls · 20/07/2008 21:19

Stress is a huge factor for me and my stress levels have gone through the roof lately, moving, money issues and it is a stressful time in schools rounding off the year.

How did it go with your GP twinset?

OrmIrian · 21/07/2008 18:19

Wow! Flattered that you'd ask us for a second opinion!

However. I agree with them! Get on the phone.

twinsetandpearls · 23/07/2008 00:22

I have seen thr GP and he things it is probably colitis but maybe crohns.

He is referring me to a specialist for when I move.

I am a mixture of very worried and a bit relieved that at last so many of the constant illnesses I have are starting to make sense.

OP posts:
ThingOne · 23/07/2008 00:25

Gosh twinset. I think there are a couple of crohn's message boards if you want to find out more. I will see if I can find links.

oh TSAP sorry to hear you're ill hope it all settles down soon.
Just keep your mind fixed on you lovely move to a lovely new place etc etc (and let the job fade into the background over the summer )

ThingOne · 23/07/2008 00:31

I think this is an organisation I've heard recommended.

twinsetandpearls · 23/07/2008 00:32

I have done a search, I am trying not to think about it too much as I am a bit scared if I am being honest, although that is daft as being given a diagnosis can't make me feel any worse if anything at last I may start to get better or at least find a way of coping.

OP posts:
twinsetandpearls · 23/07/2008 00:33

Thew thing that confuses me is that I am not loosing weight, if anything I am steadily putting it on.

OP posts:
twinsetandpearls · 23/07/2008 00:36

The cancer links are really really scaring me especially as this has been going on for over ten years with no diagnosis.

OP posts:
UnderRated · 23/07/2008 00:38

Oh Twinset

ThingOne · 23/07/2008 00:58

Twinset, even if you have bowel cancer it can be treated very well these days. I can't tell you not to worry but please don't automatically assume this will kill you. Don't google as you don't have enough information. Stick to stuff like NHS direct and patients' associations.

1dilemma · 23/07/2008 01:06

TSAP just think if you are given a diagnosis you havn't suddenly been given something you never had you've always had it you just know what it is.

Remember knowledge is power

I would think that cancer is very unlikely to have been going on for such a long time and causes weight loss too doesn't it? I agree googling is not helpful when you don't know what to google!

OrmIrian · 23/07/2008 07:40

Try not to worry. Easier said than done I know . But surely it's unlikely to be cancer if it's been going on that long.

I hope you get some clarity soon.

my mum was treated for over ten years for a gastric ulcer. She did actually have an ulcer but most of her symptoms were actually caused by ulcerative colitis, which went undiagnosed until her ulcer burst and she finally ended up in hospital where they looked at her properly instead of just sending her home with a bottle of Gaviscon. It was the colitis that was responsible for most of her symptoms and she now has it under control, only having trouble with it when she gets very stressed......and if she knows she has stressful times ahead then working with the GP to get through them with as little flare-up from the colitis as possible is how she manages it.

I do remember during those ten years my mum being very ill, occasionally fainting in town and at one point being so anaemic that she was nearly hospitalised........and all this because of the blood she was losing due to the colitis.
As scary as this must be for you right now, getting an accurate diagnosis for your illness will make a huge difference to your health..........my mum hardly left the house for years, for fear of not being near a toilet.......now mum and dad go out on trips and even had a holiday abroad.
